5 Introduction A wide variety of golf events (both fun and competitive) have become fixtures at Carleton. This document provides an overview of the events, along with a description of the format and scoring for each. The document is maintained by the Club Captain and the Playing Committee. RCGA Rules of Golf All golf events at Carleton Golf and Yacht Club are conducted according to the RCGA Rules of Golf, as modified from time to time by Local Rules (which will be clearly posted on the Scorecard and at the Starter s Line). All participants have an obligation to themselves and the field (other participants) to uphold these rules. Rules seminars are hosted by the Club keep an eye on bulletin boards/newsletters for dates. Establishing your Handicap Many events are played off-handicap, meaning your handicap is used to lower your gross score per hole. Carleton maintains a computer-based handicapping system hosted by Golf Canada. It is expected that Carleton members will enter their score for every eligible round played, to ensure that handicap information is complete and accurate. Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) ESC is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make Handicap Factors more representative of a player's potential scoring ability. It sets a maximum number that a golfer can post on any hole depending on the player's Course Handicap. The ESC system has changed in 2012 so that a player may take the number of strokes per hole as indicated in the following table. Equitable Stroke Control table: 9 or less course handicap Maximum of 2 strokes over par course handicap Maximum score of course handicap Maximum score of course handicap Maximum score of 9 40 and over course handicap Maximum score of 10 Stroke (or Medal) play vs. Stableford vs. Match Play A very short summary of common scoring methods; all can be played with or without Handicap. Stroke (Medal) play: Total number of strokes required to complete the round. Stableford: Match Play: Scored hole by hole. Bogie 1 point Par 2 points Birdie 3 points Eagle 4 points Double Eagle (Albatross) 5 points Note: You are not required to complete holes if you cannot score that is, if you ve taken more strokes than net bogie you will get a 0 no matter what your stroke count is. Scored hole by hole. The outright winner (least strokes) on a hole wins the hole. The winner of the most holes wins the match. Ties (halves) do not score. Holes may be conceded, meaning it is not necessary to hole-out before proceeding to the next tee. 5

6 Club Events Club Championship A 54-hole stroke play event for men and women, each broken down into flights, A, B, C, and D as shown in the following table: A flight will only be established if there are 4 or more participants for that flight. Handicap Factors Flight Men Women A B C D The man with the lowest gross score is crowned Men s Club Champion and the lady with the lowest gross score is crowned Ladies Club Champion. Champions are also crowned for each of the other flights. The Club Champion must have played in Flight A in the final round. A player from flight B whose 36-hole score would place him or her in the first or second group of Flight A may transfer to Flight A in order to qualify to be Club Champion, but such a player does not qualify to be the Flight B Champion. This event is usually played on the second and third weekends in August. Establishing the Cut There will be a cut for each flight after 36 holes to determine who will continue in the final round. The cut will be 50% plus ties of players with the lowest 36-hole scores, as well as any player whose 36-hole score is within 10 shots of the leader. Playing groups will be established by flight in the final round, seeded in reverse order of their total scores in rounds 1 and 2. Adjustments may be made to the playing groups to facilitate establishment of foursomes, but this will not affect the final playing groups of flights, except where players from two flights may be combined due to small numbers. Players who have made the cut but decide not to participate in the final round will not be replaced. Tee times are set up by the Pro Shop. Senior Ladies and Super Senior Ladies As part of the women s event, the lady with the lowest score who is 50 years old or more is the Ladies Senior Club Champion and is eligible to play in the OVGA Tournament of Champions. The lady with the lowest score who is 60 years old or more is the Ladies Super Senior Club Champion. These individuals will participate in rounds 1 and 2 in their respective flights, A, B, C, or D, and will be subject to the cut rules noted above. In addition to players who make the cut, any of the 4 lowest-scoring ladies in each of the Senior Ladies and Super Senior Ladies categories who did not make the cut may play in the final round. The four lowest scoring ladies may come from any flight. The four lowest-scoring ladies of each category may, but are not required to, play together in a foursome connected to the A flight, regardless of how they would otherwise have been seeded. A player who qualifies but chooses not to play in the Senior or Super Senior foursome will play in the playing group that she would otherwise be entitled to play in.. 6

7 It is important to be clear that a lady could be crowned Club Champion, Senior Club Champion and Super Senior Club Champion based on the results of this event if she is eligible for those categories. Qualification: All golfing members in good standing, including both male and female junior members with an A or B class handicap, are eligible to play in the club championship and any playing restrictions associated with their membership will be waived during all rounds of the championship. Players must sign up by the deadline. Stroke play. Three rounds Players must pick up their event scorecard before teeing off for all rounds. Gross score is entered on scorecard. Scorecards should be exchanged among the foursome, must be signed, attested and handed in to the Pro Shop. Women Yellow tees Men A and B flights Blue tees Men C and D flights White tees Club Championship Unplayable Course Conditions Protocol The canceling or discontinuing of a round due to course conditions will be made by the Club Captain and his designated Championship Committee. Two premises to the protocol are: 1. This event takes place on a weekend (does not carry over into weekday) with a crossover occurring in the first two rounds. 2. All protocol is dependent on the severity of the course conditions, future weather forecasts and the ability of the Superintendent to prepare the course for such protocol. Day 1 If play needs to be stopped and cannot be restarted in a realistic time during the day, the following will be used to determine if rounds will be counted. 1. If all competitors in a flight have finished their round, all scores will count. 2. If no competitors in a flight have completed their 12 th hole, the entire round for that flight will be quashed. 3. If all competitors in a flight have completed their 12 th hole but not all have finished, they will come back on day 2 to complete their round before round 2 is started. Pin and tee placements will be preserved. If this situation occurs, all second round tee times will likely have to be delayed slightly to accommodate maintenance and course set-up needs. Day 2 All the above applies however with the note that the round will continue the next Saturday. Day 3 There is no crossover this day. If competition cannot be completed on this day, no matter how many holes have been completed, the round will be quashed with the exception of the A championship groups. If all A championship groups have completed the 12 th hole, 7

8 players will be asked to come back the next day (Sunday) to complete their round in the morning. Otherwise results will be will revert back to and be based on competitors standing after day 2. President s Cup This is a 36-hole event. The winners are the man and the woman with the best net score through the first two rounds of the Club Championship.
