1 LESSON 15 TEACHER S GUIDE The Seal Who Wanted to Live by Ana María Alvarado Fountas-Pinnell Level O Fantasy Selection Summary A seal named Focalia likes to swim and play with her friend Delfino, a dolphin. One day, the two friends swim off into the open ocean and get lost. They spend the night alone and frightened. The next day, they learn that parts of the ocean have been polluted. Focalia and Delfino are grateful to find their way back to clean water and their families. Build interest by asking a question such as the following: What do you know about the needs of animals that live in the ocean? What do marine animals rely on besides food? Read the title and author and talk about the cover illustration. Point out the table of contents. Tell students that this story is fantasy, so while some details are realistic, the events described could not really happen. Introduce the Text Guide students through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Have students look at the table of contents. Ask them what they notice about how the author has structured the book. Page 3: Explain that this story is about a seal named Focalia, and have students look at the name and pronounce it ( Fo-CAL-ee-uh ). Suggested language: The text says Focalia likes to play with other seals and with friends of other species. Focalia also likes to have adventures. Read the last sentence: For this reason, she often got into trouble with her mother and father. How might having adventures get Focalia into trouble? What do you think one problem in this story might be? Pages 9 10: Draw attention to the illustrations, captions, and labels on pages 9 and 10. Ask: What kind of habitat is shown here? Why is living in the dirty area a problem for the fi sh? Now turn back to the beginning of the story and read to fi nd out what happens to Focalia and Delfi no on their adventure far from home. 3 Read Have students read silently while you listen to individual students read aloud. Support their understanding of the text as needed. Remind students to use the Monitor/Clarify Strategy when they come to a confusing part and find a way to understand it. and to pause Discuss and Revisit the Text Personal Response Invite students to share their personal responses to the story. Suggested language: Have you ever done something you weren t supposed to do? What do you think Focalia might do differently in the future? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, help students understand these points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Focalia, the seal, and Delfino, the dolphin, like to swim and play together. One day, Focalia and Delfino swim away from home and spend the night alone. Before finding their way home, Focalia and Delfino see beautiful beaches, as well as destruction due to pollution. An adventure can be both frightening and exciting. There is a world of living things in the ocean habitat. People should take care to protect, not destroy, life in the ocean Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. The parts of the story are organized into three chapters. Captions explain the illustrations and the action in the story. The author includes details about life in the sea and the effects of pollution. Choices for Further Support Fluency Invite students to choose a passage of dialogue from the text to act out. Encourage them to vary the tone and pitch of their voice and read with expression appropriate to each character. Comprehension Based on your observations of the students reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas. Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind students that the suffi x ly means in what manner, or to what extent, and that words with the suffi x ly answer the question how. 4 Writing about Reading Have students complete the questions on BLM Responding Have students complete the activities at the back of the book, using their Reader s Notebook. Use the instruction below as needed to reinforce or extend understanding of the comprehension skill. Target Comprehension Skill Main Ideas and Details Remind students that they can find details to support a main idea in a story. Model how to add details to the Graphic Organizer, using a Think Aloud like the one below: Think Aloud On page 6, Focalia begins to cry when she and Delfino get lost and she is afraid. On page 8, the text says that Focalia and Delfino played with children at the beach. These details support the main idea that Focalia loves life and the sea. Practice the Skill Have students share other examples of details from the story that support the main idea. Writing Prompt: Thinking Beyond the Text Have students write a response to the prompt on page 6. Remind them that when they think beyond the text, they use their personal knowledge to reach new understandings. Assessment Prompts The main problem in this story is. What does the word species on page 3 mean? Remind students that this story describes what happens when Focalia and Delfino wander away from home and go off into the open ocean. Idioms The story includes idioms that might be unfamiliar. Explain the meaning of expressions such as get into trouble (page 3), left home (page 6), and give them a talking to (page 12).
