1 isearch - Find everything you need for research in one place isearch is a powerful search engine that lets you find relevant information from Library Catalogue, major academic databases and publishers in a single search box. It consists of resources from EdUHK Library Catalogue, Library s EBSCO databases, major publishers including ScienceDirect, JSTOR, Oxford Scholarship Online and more. What is the difference between isearch and Library Catalogue? The Library Catalogue contains records of books, journals and multimedia resources only. But isearch brings together EdUHK Library's print and electronic materials, major databases and publication information from academic publishers into a one-stop search interface. isearch in 4 Simple Steps 1.Enter your search terms Key in your keywords, and use the operators AND, OR, NOT to construct complex query 2.Refine your results Limit the results by different options, e.g. Full Text, Library Catalogue only, Publication Date, Source Types, Content Provider, etc 3. View your results View Full Text articles, e-books, video, Library and more. Use to search HKALL records and link to Full Text 4. Expand your Search Explore more results from additional databases which are not included in isearch, e.g. 中國知網

2 1. Basic Search a c a. Enter keywords ; b. Limit the results by different options, e.g. Library Catalogue Only, Scholarly Journal Only or Full Text (optional); c. Refine results Limit the search to Full Text Scholarly Journal Articles, Peer Reviewed, or books available at the library You can refine your results by checking the options Library Catalog Only, Full Text, or Peer Reviewed in the Refine your results facet on the left. You can further limit the results by entering the Publication Date range. More options are provided by 3

4 clicking Show More. You can further limit the results to Academic journals,books or Dissertations at the Source Types Limit the results by database source Yes. You can limit the results for particular database(s) using Content Provider facet on the left. The no. of records is shown in brackets. Click Show More link to display a full list of sources. Check the database(s) to narrow down the results. 3b. Retrieve results Retrieve the Library Catalogue record in the result list You can retrieve the Library Catalogue record by clicking View Library Catalogue. In addition, you can search the record in HKALL by clicking 4

5 Retrieve e-books If the item found is an e-book, you can access it online by clicking the result record. Access link at the Access to the Full Text journal articles isearch provides Full Text for some journal articles. You can access it by checking the Full Text link. If there is no Full Text provided, you can use linking to the full text if it is available in the Library collection. Mark and save the results You can mark and store a record temporary by clicking the Add to folder link. The saved records can be retrieved by clicking the Folder icon of Tool Bar at the top. * Please note that the saved records will not be kept when you exit from isearch. 5

6 Store the results in a personal account Alternative, you can set up a personal account in isearch to store your search results, saved searches, and create search alerts. Click the Sign In link of Tool Bar at the top, click the Create a new Account link. Fill in the fields and click the Save Changes button when completed. * Please note that this is your isearch account but NOT Mylibrary nor MyIEd account. 3c. Extend the search to other databases results Extend the search to other databases if the relevant results was not find in isearch You can expand your search to other databases which are not included in isearch. Simply check the database(s) on the right panel, e.g. CNKI (a Chinese database provider), results will then be retrieved from the database(s). Click the Retrieve Item link to view the result at that database. 6

7 4. More functions Save a search as an Alert You can save searches as alerts and have EBSCO you with any new results. You can also retrieve those alerts to perform the search immediately, instead of waiting for the alert to run. You can either save search from the Search Alert/History window or from the Share link. Set up Alert: 1. Run a search and view your search results. 2. Click the Share link and select Alert from the resulting pop-up menu. The Create Alert window appears over the result list. 3. If you have not done so already, click the Sign in link in the alert window to sign into your My EBSCOhost folder. 4. Set your alert parameters and click Save Alert. Set up RSS Alerts If you prefer to view your search or journal alerts via an RSS reader, one-step alerts offer a quick and easy way to obtain the alert syndication feed, which you can then copy into your RSS reader. 7

8 Note: Be sure to add the feed to an aggregator within one week of its creation. A one-step alert will not expire unless the aggregator does not automatically update results (extremely unlikely) supplied by the feed for two months. To set up a one-step RSS search alert: 1. From the Result List or Search History Screen, click the RSS alert icon, or the RSS Feed link on the Share drop-down menu. 2. A pop-up screen displays with the search alert information. Copy the RSS Feed URL into your newsreader. 3. Click the Save Alert button. 4. If you decide that delivery of the alert information is required, click the Sign in link. Once you sign in to My EBSCOhost, the Search Alert Screen appears. You can save the alert as described in Saving a Search as an Alert. 8

9 Export records From the Export Manager, you can save or citations in a format compatible with your bibliographic management software. Click Export from the open result or from the folder. The Export Manager panel appears. You can click Direct Export to RefWorks which exports citations directly to RefWorks webbased bibliographic management software. 5. Off-campus access You can use isearch off-campus through the Library website. However you have to Login with your EdUHK Network username and password to access full functionalities of isearch, e.g. download Full Text. Remote access of isearch is restricted to students and staff of the Institute only.
