2 What is this report about? In we identified our priorities taking account of the Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) well-being indicators which state that our children should be Safe : protected from abuse, neglect and harm Healthy: supported to make positive life-style choices Achieving: encouraged to develop skills, confidence and self-esteem Nurtured: looked after and cared for in all settings Active: guided towards health-promoting play, recreation and sport Respected: involved in decisions that affect them Responsible: encouraged to take an active role in their own lives Included: accepted in the community in which they live and learn Throughout this report we will link our work to each of these indicators
3 Our School Our school is non-denominational and is situated in the South West of Greenock It was established in 2010 and is an amalgamation of Earnhill and Ravenscraig Primaries and Aileymill Nursery Our present role in the primary is 374 We have our own nursery class for 72/72 children aged 3-5 years. We have a large staff including a leadership team of; Head Teacher, Depute Head and two Principal Teachers, 17.3 class teachers and a range of support and ancillary staff. We have a large nursery staff team including a leadership team of Lead Practitioner and Senior EYECO, 7 EYECOS and 2 Support Assistants Inverclyde Academy & St Columba s High School are our associated Secondary schools. In August 2015 Aileymill became part of Inverclyde s Attainment Challenge, offering us support in raising attainment for all our pupils and closing the attainment gap for our most vulnerable pupils
4 In our Development Priorities were To raise attainment in Literacy To raise attainment in Numeracy To further develop our system of tracking the Significant Aspects of Learning in Literacy and Numeracy To establish an Early Level Community between our Nursery and P1 to share best practise, expertise and resources The tools we used to gather evidence included: National documents How Good is our School 4 and Child at the Centre Classroom visits Displays Level Meetings Assessment and attainment data Pupils work and Profiles Quality Visits from Education Authority staff Staff Meetings Management Team Meetings Planning Documentation Focus groups/steering groups Questionnaires
5 Values and Totality of the Curriculum How are we doing? How do we know? What is next? Values 1. RRS steering group re-established and school audit complete, school engaged with Aileen BLANK 2. Staff and pupils engaging with Five to Thrive theory and practice 3. PRPB policy underpins all relationships within Aileymill Values 1. Meetings with 2. All staff have undergone training in Five to Thrive 3. Exclusions zero August 2015 till present. Existing staff using RP to resolve disputes Values 1. Our new PT will lead the process of achieving Rights Respecting School recognition 2. Further workshop style training will embed Five to Thrive within Aileymill Families will be offered the opportunity to engage with Five to Thrive through both our Nurture Room and Amanda Holden (our Family Support Worker) 3. Pupil Council-led group to become Peer Mediators Totality of the Curriculum 1. Core skills in literacy and numeracy continue to underpin ALL learning experiences for pupils 2. Tracking of achievement taking place in Literacy and Numeracy 3. Personal achievements are celebrated weekly 4. Planning posters will be used to inform planning and ensure progression. 5. All classes and nursery use Star of the Week to celebrate children s achievements. Totality of the Curriculum 1. Elevenses with HT, classroom visits 2. Termly assessment information available to Senior Leadership Team 3. Personal achievement display of certificates in main corridor 4. Planning shows true progression especially in inter disciplinary learning 5. Star of the Week displayed on achievement wall within Nursery. Totality of the Curriculum 1. Improvement in standards of literacy and numeracy across the school 2. Tracking of Health and Wellbeing termly 3. The recognition and active promotion of wider achievement to be developed 4. All teachers confident in the use of new progression documents to ensure progression of their planning in Literacy and Numeracy 5. All staff will become confident in linking skills and attributes to the four capacities.
6 Entitlements and Principles How are we doing? How do we know? What is next? Entitlements 1. Work has begun to develop business links with organisations who will support the school 2. SLT carefully monitor Teaching and Learning throughout the school and Nursery 3. Scots Language Month in January focussed Literacy teaching on Scots Language Principles 1. Staff continuing to develop confidence in use of the 7 principles of curriculum design 2. School self- evaluation format adapted to reflect HGIOS4 3. Nursery SLT have created a 3yr selfevaluation plan to reflect Child at the Centre quality indicators. Entitlements 1. We held a very successful business breakfast with 12 outside agencies 2. All classes have received two visits from SLT and all teachers have visited another class/school to further enhance practice 3. Most classes using pack developed by DHT Principles 1. All staff evaluating monthly using the seven principles 2. Staff working collaboratively in stage groups to evaluate practice using new HGIOS4 format. 3. Staff team currently use selfevaluation tools to continually reflect on practice. Entitlements 1. Continue to build on these links for our World of Work Week 2. Continue to build our Early Level Community to include teacher input where staffing allows, develop the use of our shared planning format 3. Whole school focus on Scots Language embedded in the annual curriculum Principles 1. Development of a shared understanding of the seven principles for the whole school community 2. Staff confident in the principles which underpin HGIOS4 and how they are applied to their own teaching. 3. Staff will develop their knowledge and understanding of new self-evaluation document format in line with HGIO???
7 Learning & Teaching and Assessment How are we doing? How do we know? What is next? Learning & Teaching 1. All pupils have engaged with the Accelerated Reading programme 2. The majority of pupils are making progress in reading 3. P1 and 2 pupils benefiting from additional targeted support from the Attainment Challenge 4. All staff engaged with the key goal of narrowing the Attainment Gap and Raising Attainment For All 5. Nursery children are provided with quality learning experiences. Learning & Teaching 1. Teacher s class reports 2. Attainment data 3. Attainment Challenge team monitoring progress 4. Nursery SLT monitoring learning experiences within playroom. Feedback from parental questionnaires Learning & Teaching 1. Continue to embed Accelerated Reading and develop an ethos of reading for pleasure 2. In line with our School Improvement Plan raise attainment in Writing and Numeracy, continue to raise attainment in reading 3. Aileymill to fully commit to being a Visible Learning School and to focus on strategies to achieve this as defined by the staff collegiately 4. New approaches to Literacy (North Lanarkshire Active Literacy) and Numeracy (Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning) will be explored and incorporated into the Aileymill Curriculum Assessment 1. Systems for tracking individual pupils progress in Literacy and Numeracy have been modified to reflect current best practice 2. Processes being developed to work on tracking HWB. 3. Nursery staff are piloting assessment tracking tool for 3 cross cutting themes. Assessment 1. All termly Literacy and Numeracy assessment data will be on new Excell format by August Working party tasked with designing a format for tracking HWB 3. Assessment tracking sheet is currently being used by all keyworkers tracking children s individual progress. Assessment 1. All staff will be able to access and interrogate meaningful data on their own pupil s progress and use it to inform future learning and teaching 2. HWB tracking data available to inform future planning. 3. Nursery SLT will share assessment tracking sheet with P1 teachers and feeder schools
8 Experiences & Outcomes and Supporting Learners How are we doing? How do we know? What is next? Experiences & Outcomes 1. Planned progressions established for Numeracy and Literacy 2. What Are We Learning? posters used to inform planning in all classes. 3. Story Grammar programme is embedded in practice for pre-school children. 4. Children have access to a weekly lending library and Adventure Ted. 5. Children take part in Bookbug sessions within the playroom. Experiences & Outcomes 1. All staff becoming familiar with these progressions 2. Teachers able to refer to their use of the posters in the planning process 3. Children have successfully completed a Story Grammar Programme that shows progression. 4. Children actively take part in Lending Library and Adventure Ted parents completed feedback sheets with children. 5. Children take part in Bookbug sessions within playroom and parent and sibling attend a two weekly session. Experiences & Outcomes 1. All staff confident in understanding what progression through a level looks like for Literacy and Numeracy at their stage 2. Planning is responsive to ensure starting with what children know 3. Introduce and embed maths bag lending library 4. Develop Numicon 5. Further develop Bookbug sessions Supporting Learners 1. Aileymill pupils continue to be very well supported by our staff 2. Review of ASN process undertaken by SLT and Nurture teacher and updated to reflect the new GIRFEC pathway 3. All staff developing in their knowledge of Five To Thrive 4. Families growing in confidence in working with their children and helping them learn through play, through attendance at Family Learning Supporting Learners 1. Parental response to GIRFEC questionnaire 2 All children now placed on the GIRFEC pathway according to their needs. Wellbeing Assessments have been carried out for a number of pupils 3. All staff (including Nursery and Support Staff have received both practical and theoretical training in Five to Thrive 4. Formal and informal feedback from our Family learning Club Supporting Learners 1. Continue to engage with a variety of outside agencies to support pupils and their families 2 New GIRFEC pathway established and understood by all 4. Parents to be offered Five To Thrive workshops in collaboration with Nurture Teacher and Barnardo s 5. Roll out Family Learning to as many families as possible
9 How are we doing? Our pupils actively participate in: Pupil Council, Parental Involvement Group, Fairtrade Group, ECO group, Buddy system, paired reading Our P6 café welcomes parents monthly Parents are involved in evaluating the school using the wellbeing indicators Variety of after school clubs available both sporting and expressive arts based Nursery children celebrate Grandparents Day Parents share in children s learning through Curriculum Evening How do we know? Minutes of meetings of the pupil council and other committees and steering groups. Good parental attendance at café Returned questionnaires from parents annually Good attendance at after school clubs Good attendance at both Curriculum Evening and Grandparents Day What are we going to do now? Pupils to be trained as Peer Mediators Develop the café to work in partnership with the Young People s Library Service and Community Learning and Development Continue to offer as broad a variety of after school clubs as possible Continue to build relationships with parents in as varied ways as possible Continue to involve parents in children s learning through a variety of events.
10 Our new Christmas show: The Christmas Cracker was a huge success Achievements We kept up the important tradition of competing at the Inverclyde Music Festival.( Lots and lots and lots of us!!) Nursery children have successfully completed Story Grammar Programme P7 LOVED their visits from Inverclyde Academy s teachers. (thank you to them!) We successfully took part in our Cluster Rugby Tournament- Go Team Aileymill!! All nursery children have completed Morton Physical Literacy Programme We raised over 300 for St John s Ambulance by sponsoring Mrs Johnston s son in the London Marathon All nursery children worked with local musician Kenny Wilson to perform traditional Scottish songs for Grandparents Day
