1 DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS Economics determines much of today s social and political landscape. As we know, it is the science of decision making. As individuals, communities, companies and governments, we face choices every day, weighing up costs and benefits of our decisions. With the ongoing drive of globalization, economics remains a key element. As a result, the demand for fresh economics graduates is on the rise. This is because these students are well equipped with various tools and techniques to solve complex problems on any scale. PIDE being a leading economic research institute realized the importance of extending the knowledge of Economics at an academic level, and is now introducing MSc in Economics to provide advanced training in economic analysis. The programme will offer a wide range of optional subjects as well. It offers students the opportunity to study particular areas of economics in greater depth, from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective. The PhD Programme in Economics had already started seven years ago and the placement of our graduates has been at the best policy making institutes in Pakistan. The Masters Programme in Economics is a two year academic programme, designed to produce professional economists with a grip over analytical skills and the ability to contribute to development of policies and undertake independent research. Similarly, M.Phil is a two year academic programme. It not only aims to prepare the theoretical foundations of the students but also requires them to undertake a research thesis in the final year. The course work is similar to that of the PhD Programme. The students have an option to convert their M.Phil into PhD if they wish to do so. Finally, the PhD programme is a four year academic programme. The normal duration for the course work is two years. Students are required to pass their comprehensive examinations in order to progress to the research stage. The department of Economics consists of senior faculty members, with research and teaching experience of over 20 years. Several members of the department also serve as advisors to various governmental agencies and other multi/bi lateral organizations. The degrees in Economics are professional degrees that will prepare students for careers in the private sector as economic analysts in business, consultancy firms, financial institutions, and applied research firms. They may also find jobs in international organizations (World Bank, IMF, International Labour Organization), government (all ministries, the European Union, but also with scientific bureaus of political parties), and non profit organizations (non government organizations, universities and other teaching jobs).

7 Year 3/4 Ph.D. Dissertation The students must submit their research proposals within six months of passing the comprehensive examinations. The research proposal must be defended in a seminar and be approved by the Board of Studies. Only after the proposal is approved; the students will be allowed to advance to the dissertation stage. The approved dissertation will be defended before the Dissertation Committee, including the Internal and External Examiners.
