1 SECTION FOUNTAIN WATERPROOFING PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following: 1. Single-component, polyurethane waterproofing for coating reflecting pools and fountain elements where indicated. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 7 Section "Joint Sealants" for joint-sealant materials and installation. 2. Division 3 section Cast-In-Place Concrete for reflecting pools. 1.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Provide waterproofing membrane that prevents the passage of water. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: Include manufacturer's written instructions for evaluating, preparing, and treating substrate, technical data, and tested physical and performance properties of waterproofing. B. Shop Drawings: Show locations and extent of waterproofing. Include details for substrate joints and cracks, sheet flashings, penetrations, inside and outside corners, tie-ins with adjoining waterproofing, and other termination conditions. C. Samples: For the following products: by-12-inch square of flashing sheet. D. Installer Certificates: Signed by manufacturers certifying that installers comply with requirements. E. Product Test Reports: From a qualified independent testing agency indicating and interpreting test results of waterproofing for compliance with requirements, based on comprehensive testing of current waterproofing formulations. F. Sample Warranty: Copy of special waterproofing manufacturer's warranty stating obligations, remedies, limitations, and exclusions before starting waterproofing. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: A qualified installer who is licensed by waterproofing manufacturer to install manufacturer's products. Halff Associates, Inc. - McAllen, TX Office

2 B. Source Limitations: Obtain waterproofing materials through one source from a single manufacturer. C. Preinstallation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site to comply with requirements in Division 1 Section "Project Management and Coordination." Review requirements for waterproofing, including surface preparation specified under other Sections, substrate condition and pretreatment, minimum curing period, forecasted weather conditions, special details and sheet flashings, installation procedures, testing and inspection procedures, and protection and repairs. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Deliver liquid materials to Project site in original containers with seals unbroken, labeled with manufacturer's name, product brand name and type, date of manufacture, shelf life, and directions for storing and mixing with other components. B. Store liquid materials in their original undamaged containers in a clean, dry, protected location and within the temperature range required by waterproofing manufacturer. C. Remove and replace liquid materials that cannot be applied within their stated shelf life. D. Protect stored materials from direct sunlight. 1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Environmental Limitations: Apply waterproofing within the range of ambient and substrate temperatures recommended by waterproofing manufacturer. Do not apply waterproofing to a damp or wet substrate, when relative humidity exceeds 85 percent, or when temperatures are less than 5 deg F above dew point. 1. Do not apply waterproofing in snow, rain, fog or mist, or when such weather conditions are imminent during application and curing period. B. Maintain adequate ventilation during application and curing of waterproofing materials. 1.8 WARRANTY A. Special Manufacturer's Warranty: Written warranty, signed by waterproofing manufacturer and Installer agreeing to repair or replace waterproofing that does not comply with requirements or that does not remain watertight within specified warranty period. 1. Warranty does not include failure of waterproofing due to failure of substrate prepared and treated according to requirements or formation of new joints and cracks in substrate that exceed 1/16 inch in width. 2. Warranty Period: Five years after date of Substantial Completion. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Available Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Neogard, Div. of Jones-Blair; Pool Gard Tremco, Inc.; Vulkem 450/351 Halff Associates, Inc. - McAllen, TX Office

3 2.2 WATERPROOFING MATERIALS A. General: Provide waterproofing materials recommended by manufacturer to be compatible with one another and able to develop bond to substrate under conditions of service and application, as demonstrated by waterproofing manufacturer based on testing and field experience. 1. Produce waterproofing materials suitable for application to vertical, horizontal, and sloped substrates, as applicable. 2. Provide waterproofing materials with not less than 90 percent solids. B. Cold Fluid-Applied Waterproofing: Comply with ASTM C 836, with manufacturer's written physical requirements, and as follows: 1. Single-component, unmodified polyurethane waterproofing. 2.3 AUXILIARY MATERIALS A. Primer: Manufacturer's standard, factory-formulated polyurethane or epoxy primer. B. Sheet Flashing: 50-mil- minimum, nonstaining uncured sheet neoprene. 1. Adhesive: Manufacturer's recommended contact adhesive. C. Reinforcing Strip: Manufacturer's recommended fiberglass mesh or polyester fabric. D. Joint Sealant: Multicomponent polyurethane sealant, compatible with waterproofing, complying with ASTM C 920 Type M, Class 25; Grade NS for sloping and vertical applications or Grade P for deck applications; Use NT exposure; and as recommended by manufacturer for substrate and joint conditions. 1. Backer Rod: Closed-cell polyethylene foam. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 INSPECTION A. Concrete: Verify that the work done under other sections meets the following requirements:. 1. That the concrete deck surface is free of ridges and sharp projections. If metal forms or decks are used they should be ventilated to permit adequate drying of concrete on exterior exposed deck. 2. That the concrete was cured for a minimum of 28 days. (Minimum of 3,000 psi compressive strength). Water-cured treatment of concrete is preferred. The use of concrete curing agents, if any, shall be of the sodium silicate base only; others require written approval by manufacturer. 3. That the concrete was finished by a power or hand steel trowel followed by soft hair broom to obtain light texture or sidewalk finish. 4. That damaged areas of concrete deck be restored to match adjacent areas. Use 100% solids epoxy and sand for filling and leveling. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Cleaning: Surfaces contaminated with oil or grease shall be vigorously scrubbed with a power broom and a strong non-sudsing detergent. Thoroughly wash clean, and dry. Areas where oil or other contaminants penetrate deep into the concrete may require removal by mechanical methods. Halff Associates, Inc. - McAllen, TX Office

4 B. Etching: Treat concrete surfaces with 10% to 15% solution of muriatic acid to remove laitance and impurities. After acid has stopped foaming or boiling, immediately rinse thoroughly with water. Re-rinse as required to remove muriatic acid solution. Note: If acid etching is not practical, shotblasting is an acceptable alternative. However, proper care and procedure should be taken to leave the concrete surface as unopened as possible. C. Cracks and Cold Joints: Visible hairline cracks (up to 1/16 in width) in concrete and cold joints shall be cleaned, primed and treated with polyurethane deck coating material a minimum distance of 2 on each side of crack to yield a total thickness of 30 dry mils. Large cracks (over 1/16 in width) shall be routed and sealed with sealant approved by manufacturer. Sealant shall be applied to inside area of crack only, not applied to deck surface. Detail sealed cracks with polyurethane deck coating material a distance of 2 on each side of crack to yield a total thickness of 30 dry mils. D. Control Joints: Seal secondary control joints with sealant approved by manufacturer. Sealant shall be applied to inside area of joint only, not applied to deck surface. Detail sealed joints with polyurethane deck coating material a distance of 2 on each side of joint to yield a total thickness of 30 dry mils. E. Sheet Flashing: install sheet flashing where indicated on the drawings prior to the application of base coats. F. Surface Condition: Surface shall be clean and dry prior to coating. 3.3 APPLICATION A. Primer: Apply primer at a minimum rate of 1/3 gallon per 100 square feet to all concrete surfaces. Within 24 hours of application of primer, base coat must be applied. If base coat cannot be applied within 24 hours, re-prime. B. Base Coat: Apply 1 gallon per 100 square feet of polyurethane coating material to deck surfaces to yield an average 12 dry mils in strict accordance with procedures outlined by manufacturer. Extend base coat over cracks and control joints which have received treatment. Supply base coat same day as prime coat. C. Second Base Coat: Apply 1 gallon per 100 square feet of polyurethane coating material to deck surfaces to yield an average 12 dry mils in strict accordance with procedures outlined by manufacturer. Vertical surfaces may require additional coats to build film to design thickness. D. Top Coat: Mix manufacturer s recommended chemical resistant polyurethane at a ratio of 2:1 for three minutes. Apply two coats at a rate of 280 square feet per gallon per coat to yield an average of 7 dry mils in strict accordance with procedures outlined by manufacturer total system coating thickness averages 31 dry mils. Vertical surfaces may require additional coats to build film to design thickness. Note: if more than 24 hours lapse between top coat applications, the first top coat must be sanded prior to second top coat application. Repeat this step for additional coats. 1. Top coat shall be colored black. 3.4 CURING, PROTECTING, AND CLEANING A. Cure waterproofing according to manufacturer's written recommendations, taking care to prevent contamination and damage during application stages and curing. 1. Do not permit foot or vehicular traffic on unprotected membrane. B. Protect waterproofing from damage and wear during remainder of construction period. Halff Associates, Inc. - McAllen, TX Office
