1 1 بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم - Twenty One - The Prophet Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and Utbah ben عتبة بن ربيعة Rabee ah\ Ibnu Ishaaq\ إبن إسحاق said: Yazeed ben Zeyaad\ يزيد بن زياد from Muhammad ben Ka b Al Qurathee\ محمد بن كعب القرظي told me that he was told that Utbah ben Rabee ah \ عتبة بن ربيعة, who was a chief, said one day while he was sitting in the Quraysh\ قريش assembly and the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was sitting in the masjed by himself: Why should I not go to Muhammad\ محمد Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and make some proposals to him which if he accepts in part, we will give him whatever he wants, and he will leave us in peace? This happened when Hamzah حمزة \ had accepted Islaam and they saw that the Prophet s followers Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam were increasing and multiplying.

2 2 The House of Allaah\,هللا between the Black األسودStone,الحجر in the pillar on your right, and the Yamane Pillar\ اليماني,الركن on the pillar on your left : between these two pillars the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam used to perform his salaats. Hasanwali 1433A.H./2011CE. عتبةUtbah The Prophet Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and They thought it was a good idea, and Utbah عتبة went and sat by the Prophet - Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and said: O my nephew, you are one of us as you know, of the noblest of the tribe and hold a worthy position in ancestry. You have come to your people with an important matter, dividing their community thereby and ridiculing their customs, and you have insulted their gods and their religion, and declared that their forefathers were unbelievers, so listen to me and I will make some suggestions, and perhaps you will be able to accept one of them.

3 3 The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said: "قل يا أبا الوليد أسمع." O Abaa Al Waleed\ الوليد,أبا talk and I will listen. عتبةUtbah said: If what you want is money, we will gather for you of our property so that you may be the richest of us; if you want honour, we will make you our chief so that no one can decide anything apart from you; if you want sovereignty, we will make you king, and if this ghost and he means angel Jebreel\ جبريل - which comes to you, which you see, is such that you cannot get rid of him, we will find a physician for you, and exhaust our means in getting you cured, for often a familiar spirit gets possession of a man until he can be cured of it, or words to that effect. The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam listened patiently, and then said: "أقد فرغت يا أبا الوليد "?أبا الوليد Waleed\ Did you finish O Abaa Al عتبةUtbah said: Yes. The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam listened patiently, and then said: "فاسمع مني." These Aayahs mean (translation of Abdullah Yoosuf Ali): In the Name of Allaah\,اهلل Most Gracious, Most Merciful.Alif Laam Meem(1)This is the revelation of the Book in which there is no doubt from the Lord of the Worlds(2)Or do they say: He forged it? Nay, it is the Truth from your Lord, that you may admonish a people to whom no warner has come before you: in order that they may receive guidance(3)it is اهللAllaah Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all between them, in six Days, then He established Himself on the Throne (of authority); you have none, beside Him to protect or intercede (for you): will you not then receive admonition!(4)he rules (all) affaires from the heavens to the

5 5 earth: in the end will (all affairs) go up to Him, on a Day, the space whereof will be (As) a thousand years of your reckoning(5)such is He, the Knower of all things, hidden and open, the Exalted (In power), the Merciful(6)He Who has made everything which He has created Most Good: He began the creation of man with (nothing more than) clay(7)and made his progeny from a quintessence of the nature of a fluid despised(8)but He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him something of His Spirit. And He gave you (the faculties of) hearing and sight and feeling (And understanding): little thanks do you give(9)and when they say: What! When we lie, hidden and lost, in the earth, shall we indeed be in a Creation renewed? Nay, they deny the Meeting with their Lord!(10)Say: The Angel of Death, put in charge of you, will (duly) take your souls then shall you be brought back to your Lord(11)If only you could see when the guilty ones will bend low their heads before their Lord (saying:) Our Lord! We have seen and we have heard: now then send us back (To the world): we will work righteousness: for we do indeed (now) believe(12)if We had so willed, We could certainly have brought every soul its guidance: but the Word from Me will come true: I will fill Hell with Jinns and men all together (13) Taste you the-for you forgot the Meeting of this Day of yours. And We too will forget you-taste you the penalty of Eternity for your (evil) deeds!(14)only those believe in Our Signs, who, when they are recited to them fall down in adoration, and celebrate the praises of their Lord, nor are they (Ever) puffed up with pride(15)their limbs do forsake their beds of sleep, the while they call on their Lord, in Fear and Hope: and they spend (in charity) out of the sustenance which We have bestowed on them(16)now no person knows what delights of the eye are kept hidden (in reserve) for them as a reward for their (good) Deeds(17)Is then the man who believes no better than the man who is rebellious and wicked? Not equal are they(18)for those who believe and do righteous deeds, are Gardens as hospitable homes, for their (good) deeds(19)as to those who are rebellious and wicked, their abode will be the Fire: very time they wish to get away therefrom, they will be forced thereinto, and it will be said to them: Taste you the Penalty of the Fire, the which you were wont to reject as false(20)and indeed We will make them taste of the Penalty of this (life) prior to the supreme Penalty in order that they may (repent) return(21)and who does more wrong than one to whom are recited the Signs of his Lord and who then turns away therefrom? Verily from those who transgress We shall exact (Due) Retribution(23)We did indeed aforetime give the Book to Moses: be not then in doubt of its reaching (you) and We made it a guide to the Children of Israel(23)And We appointed, from among them, leaders, giving guidance under Our command, so long as they preserved with patience and continued to have faith in Our Signs(24)Verily your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgement, in the matter wherein they differ (among themselves)(25)does it not reach them a lesson, how many generations we destroyed before them, in whose dwellings they (Now) go to and fro? Verily in that are Sign: do they not then listen?(26)and do they not see that We drive Rain to parched soil (bare of herbage), and produce therewith crops, providing food for their cattle and themselves? Have they not the vision?(27)they said: When will the Decision be, if you are telling the truth? (28)Say: On the Day of Decision, no profit will it be to

6 6 Unbelievers if they (then) believe! Nor will they be granted a respite(29)so turn away from them, and wait: they too are waiting(30). (Quraan 32:1-30). When Utbah\ عتبة heard it from the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam, he listened attentively, putting his hands behind his back and leaning on them as he listened. When the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu Alayhe Wa Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam recited Aayah eighteen he made sujood\,سجود and when he ended the Soorah\ السورة he said to :عتبة Utbah\ "قد سمعت يا أبا الوليد ما سمعت. فأنت وذاك." You have heard what you have heard O Abaa Al Waleed \ يا أبا الوليد ; the rest remains with you. عتبةUtbah and his ompanions When عتبةUtbah returned to his companions they noticed that his expression had completely altered, and they asked him what had happened. He said that he had heard words such as he had never heard before, which were neither poetry, spells, nor withcraft. He said: Take my advice and do as I do, leave this man entirely alone for, by Allaah\,هللا the words which I have heard will be blazed abroad. If (other) Arabs kill him, others will have rid you of him; if he gets the better of the Arabs, his sovereignty will be your sovereignty, his power your power, and you will be prosperous through him. They said: He has bewitched you with his tongue. To which he answered: You have my opinion, you must do what you think fit. xasanwali
