WHO? Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 will be taking the PSAT test on October 14, All teachers will serve as test administrators with two teachers in most rooms If you are the parent of a student taking the PSAT, you are not permitted to proctor the PSAT exam. Please see me if this applies, as we will need to rework assignments Please pick up your bin from the library no later than 8:25 am on the morning of October 14.
Before the test Inform students of testing arrangements Student divisions and room numbers will be posted in the building Remind the student they will need Two No.2 pencils An approved calculator (scientific or graphing) address (optional) A photo ID Student to test administrator ratio is 35 to 1 Post College Board School code , test date, and start and stop times so all students can see them
The testing room Make sure that you have a clock in your room All students must face the same direction Cover displays that might provide assistance to students during the test Write time remaining during tests at regular intervals on the board to help students pace themselves
Seating Chart Do not allow students to select their own seats Prepare a seating chart If an irregularity occurs, the seating chart is necessary and may help determine how to handle the irregularity Blank seating chart will be provided on test day inside the testing bin
October 14, the day of the test Post your school s 6-digit school code number so all students can copy it correctly (there will be a large copy in your bin) Advise students to bring their own calculator a scientific or graphing calculator is recommended Students may have on their desk a test booklet, an answer document, a No.2 pencil, and, on the math section, a calculator Use of any electronic device other than a calculator on the math section is prohibited: (cell phones are prohibited) Dictionaries or thesauruses, foreign language dictionaries, pamphlets, and highlighters are prohibited No food or drink is allowed in the testing area unless for medical reasons
Very Important Please write the name of each student on their test booklet. You, as the test administrator, are the one who must unpackage the booklets. We are not permitted to do this in advance of the test. There will be specific instructions that you will read as students are preparing their answer documents. This is about a 30 minute process.
Cell Phones/Book Bags Cell phones, translators, alarm watches, etc. are electronic devices and strictly prohibited. Upon entry into the testing room, ask students to place their turned off cell phones into the provided baggies and mark their names. Ask students to place all of their personal items at the front of the room in a general location.
Don t leave me Do not leave your partner unattended for long periods of time. Students may not go to the restroom without an escort much like we do with TAKS Active monitoring is required as we do for TAKS testing. Do not overly monitor the students. No bonding please
Why PSAT? Student s scores impact their future National Merit Scholars are chosen using PSAT scores Many scholarship organizations use PSAT data to identify possible recipients of funds EHS identifies AP course recruitment pools using the testing data we receive from our students EHS uses the information from the test to seek weaknesses and adjust instruction in order to meet gaps in student knowledge
Finally finished When students have completed the test Place booklets in alpha order separately Test documents in alpha order separately Double check that names are on all student booklets
Bottom of the bin Misc Suppies Signs Booklets Answer docs ROLL SHEET ON TOP The order
How is this scored? PSAT scores student s answers in the following way Critical reading Mathematics, and writing skills scored on a point scale Correct answer = 1 point Omitted question = 0 points Wrong answer on mc questions = -1/4 point Wrong answer on griddables = 0 points
Test Set-Up Two 25 minute Critical Reading sections = total 48 questions 13 sentence completions 35 passage-based questions Two 25 minute Mathematics sections = total 38 questions 28 multiple choice 10 student-produced (griddable) answers One 30 minute Writing Skills section = total 39 questions 20 improving sentences 14 identifying sentence errors 5 improving paragraphs
Friendly Reminder Please remind the students of the review booklet they were provided in their English class. Please also remind them of the opportunity to gain scholarships and recognition if they do well. Convey to them that we use this information so their effort is critical.
