1 Dear Pastor and Chair of SPRC: Clergy Effectiveness and Development Form Instructions Once again, we are asking pastors and SPRCs to gauge areas of ministerial strength and develop a plan for growing in pastoral effectiveness. We know that excellent clergy leadership provides one of the most important keys to healthy, growing churches. We are asking that every pastor and the SPRC chair of the church served by the pastor complete this form during the summer of 2014, following the beginning of the new appointment year. Between July 1 and August 31, please plan for a time to complete this form and return it to your District Superintendent by September 15. Directions are explained on the form. If you, as a pastor, are in a new appointment as of July 1, you may wait until next year to complete this form. Measureable Results (pages 2-3) ask for specific information and invite comments from both the pastor and SPRC. Performance Factors (page 4) ask for ratings for the clergy behaviors and invited comments from both the pastor and SPRC. Page 5 invites the clergy person to identify areas in which they would like to receive coaching to increase their effectiveness. Additional comments are invited by the pastor and SPRC. Once the form is received by the DS additional comments may be added to the form. The intention of this tool is to help clergy, with assistance from their SPRC, DS and the Board of Ordained Ministry assess their effectiveness in ministry and identify areas for growth. This form does not replace the Appointment Advisory Form filled out each winter. Strengthening our clergy leadership is one of the priorities set forth by our Conference Board of Stewards. We hope you as both the pastor and chair of a Staff- Parish Relations Committee will find using this tool to be productive, which will lead us to a strong and more vibrant conference. We want to be accountable to each other in love. Performance Rating Assign the performance level which most closely matches one of the descriptions below. 4 Exceeds Expectations Results and ministry related behaviors have consistently exceeded expectations in most areas of responsibility. Clergy at this level are fully qualified in all aspects of the ministry and have demonstrated ability to achieve results and make contributions significantly above what would be expected of most Clergy performing similar work. 3 Fully Satisfactory Results and ministry-related behaviors have consistently met expectations in all major areas of responsibility. Clergy at this level accomplish all basic position requirements. Key assignments are adequately fulfilled and the general level of performance meets expectations. May occasionally exceed expectations in some areas. 2 1 Needs Improvement Unsatisfactory Results and ministry-related behaviors have not fully met expectations in some areas of responsibility. Clergy at this level fulfill most basic position requirements, but there is room for improvement. Clergy has capacity to reach fully satisfactory performance, or better, with reasonable effort. This level may be acceptable for clergy in a new position if normal progress is being made in acquiring full ministry knowledge and skills. Results and ministry-related behaviors consistently have not met expectations in most areas of responsibility. Clergy at this level demonstrate unacceptable performance and a written plan for improvement must be made. Potential for improvement must be evident within a stated period or an exiting process with the Clergy will be initiated. 1
