3 Environmental solutions run in cycles Konica Minolta takes into account the various environmental aspects of its products. This approach begins with the research and development of new products and ser vices, continues through all internal processes integrating both the supplier and customer chain, and comes full circle with the recycling of old devices. All in all, Konica Minolta assesses the environmental impact at each stage in a product s lifecycle, from raw materials and parts procurement to manufacture, transportation, sale, reuse and disposal. The following pages present technologies and features for the ecofriendly production, usage and recycling of cutting-edge multifunctional devices. Product lifecycle and assessment

4 Challenging targets Konica Minolta s environmental strategy is based on exact facts and figures. The company s activities are steps on a precisely defined route and each of them is evaluated according to its concrete effects. This method allows the company to establish challenging targets, for example a 20% reduction in CO 2 emissions throughout the product s lifecycle, by fiscal year 2010, compared to fiscal 2000 levels. To achieve this goal, CO 2 reduction targets have been set for four parameters: CO 2 emissions from sites in Japan, from production sites in the US, Europe and Asia, during distribution and during product use. This is just one example to demonstrate how environmentally responsible thinking works in a world-wide company with complex structures. The only way to get convincing results is to consider each and every factor in the entire value chain. Drastic CO 2 reduction is one of Konica Minolta s core goals as a manufacturer because the company is committed to the overall cause of preventing global warming. 5 Environmentally friendly production The Konica Minolta environmental management system leads to process chains which begin even before the production of devices. The development of new multifunctional systems for offices or production printing is absolutely key to the future saving of energy, raw materials and consumables. Green procurement Konica Minolta offers products with low environmental impact. To achieve this goal again and again, the company has undertaken a global Procurement Policy: raw materials, parts and components are exclusively procured from suppliers with active commitment to the environment. CO 2 emission With the start of the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol in 2008, corporate responsibility for reducing CO 2 emissions from group sites has increased even further. But the measures defined for reducing CO 2 emissions cover not only emissions from business sites during product manufacture, but also during product distribution, the sales stage and product use. One result, for instance, is a reduction in air transport ratio of 60% in 2006 compared to Zero waste Konica Minolta is consistently trying to avoid unnecessary acquisitions and to minimise waste of both resources and costs. Furthermore, acquired resources are always used efficiently and the volume of externally discarded waste is reduced by internal recycling. The company s goal is to reduce the total waste disposal at all sites by 20% in 2010 compared to Chemical pollution Konica Minolta believes that comprehensive management of chemicals throughout every product s lifecycle is elementary. Efforts in this field focus on the elimination of hazardous substances from products and the improvement of occupational health and safety.

6 Green technology It is Konica Minolta s intention to promote devices with cutting-edge technology in order to reduce the environmental footprint. This contribution is evident in several innovations which increase the efficiency in everyday operations. Simitri polymerised toner This toner from Konica Minolta achieves an approximately 40% reduction in CO 2 emission during production compared to conventional pulverised methods. The toner also helps to minimise power consumption due to its lower fusing point. The usage of Simitri toner can lead to savings up to 20%. Induction heating fusing technology Warming up the fusing unit by applying induction heating leads to a remarkable reduction of power consumption. The required temperature can be reached and controlled precisely, resulting in minimised losses of energy. With its short warm-up time, IH technology is ideal in combination with power-saving modes (see next point). Optimal power control With the Low Power and Sleep Mode, Konica Minolta devices are equipped to save power, especially during idle phases. Furthermore, both modes can be scheduled automatically with an easy-to-use calendar tool. Duplex printing Every Konica Minolta device from the bizhub series offers the duplex printing function. Highvolume offices in particular benefit from it, reducing their power and paper consumption. Toner recycling system Collecting, recycling and reusing toner that is not transferred to the paper during the printing process. Grand prize for two devices The Konica Minolta bizhub C550 and bizhub C650 have won Japan s 2007 Energy Conservation Grand Prize. This important award has been granted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and highlights the outstanding energy efficiency and innovate environmental technology of the products. 7 Intelligent recycling In compliance with the EU directive on Waste and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), Konica Minolta supports the Clean Planet Program, RoHs (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive), the Reuse and Recycling of Information Technology Equipment and the Promotion of Recycling through Uniformity of Outer Casing Plastics. Clean Planet Program This program combines activities from comprehensive management systems to clean and efficient toner cartridge recycling. RoHs In July 2006, the RoHs Directive came into effect in the EU market. Konica Minolta not only avoids the listed substances in the RoHs-designated products but also discontinued the use of these substances in all products, except for some specific medical instruments. Re-use and recycling Konica Minolta has established a Practical Design Manual for Recycling in order to enable easy removal of recyclable parts and resources from used products. Uniformity of outer casing plastics All outer casing parts of every MFP are made of the same two types of plastic, allowing a closed material-recycling loop and incorporation into the manufacture of new products. Green recognition Konica Minolta is proud of the environmental recognition and acclaim it has gained from the international community. Among the labels our devices have acquired are such important certificates as the German Blue Angel and the Energy Star. These leading Type I labels are based on strict criteria and therefore are perfect proof that our mission is successful: offering products that are good for both people and the environment.
