Applicants, where appropriate, need to discuss with their line manager in their employing organisations. Application forms, specifically for these modules are available ONLY from the University website As part of the application process the applicant organises a tripartite meeting with the module lead or representative and the proposed designated medical supervisor. For academic queries, please contact one of the following: Programme Lead: Stevan Monkley-Poole Tel: S.A.Monkley-Poole@brighton.ac.uk Assessment A range of assessment strategies is employed to test knowledge, decision-making and the application of theory to practice. These are dictated by the National Standards of the Department of Health and the relevant regulatory bodies. The Health and Care Professions Council require an 80% pass mark for any written assessment element (not Portfolio).* They require the following: 1. Assessment must confirm that the supplementary prescriber has achieved the additional learning outcomes for independent prescribing listed in this curriculum. 2. Assessment must provide confirmation of the supplementary prescriber s clinical competence in the area(s) for which they intend to independently prescribe, including detailed pharmacology of medicines. 3. Satisfactory completion of the period of practice experience, including sign-off by the designated medical practitioner, that the student is competent to independently prescribe medicines in their scope of practice
4 4. Testing of students understanding of their professional, ethical and legal responsibilities in relation to independent prescribing (including their understanding of equality and inclusion issues for individual patients and groups) as an integral component of the programme assessment, with this explicit in the programme learning outcomes. 5. Each trainee will be required to maintain a Portfolio of Practice Evidence to demonstrate that learning outcomes have been achieved plus to support CPD and continuing registration and annotation. 6. Submission of a personal formulary from within trainee s individual scope of practice. 7. In line with other professional groups, it is essential that physiotherapists or podiatrists who wish to undertake the Supplementary Prescribing to Independent Prescribing Conversion programme undertake a numeracy skills assessment if they have not already done so as part of a Supplementary Prescribing education programme. The students should be required to demonstrate that they fully understand the importance of demonstrating numeracy skills alongside undertaking medicines calculations. The assessment elements comprise the 3 parts as follows: Examination (A) Unseen final examination comprising multiple choice questions and short answer questions (80% pass mark)*, if required a calculation paper (pass/refer 100%) 25% Coursework (B) Critical review of a drug from the students specific scope of prescribing practice (80% pass mark)* 25% (C) Prescribing practice portfolio 50% Assessment element (A) achieves requirements 1-7 Assessment element (B) achieves requirement 2 Assessment element (C) achieves requirements 4, 7 Each part of the above examination and coursework elements of the assessment strategies carries an equal weighting and students must achieve the required pass or pass mark in each of the components, individual statutory body requirements apply differently depending on the profession. The final mark is calculated from the arithmetic mean of the mark from the three components (A C). Certain elements are also graded pass or refer independent of the overall mark awarded. A pass mark awarded cannot compensate against any refer element. Additionally all components carry the proviso that if a candidate indicates unsafe practice or conveys any ideas that might be detrimental to the safety of the patient or public; a refer grade will be recorded e.g. inaccurate drug calculations, failure to take account of possible adverse reactions and drug interactions. Any example of a student compromising patients safety would then be discussed with the student s Regulatory Body as a professional issue not an academic matter. The General Examination and Assessment Regulation for Taught Courses (GEAR) are followed in relationship to assessment regulations. NO element of APL is considered for any aspect of the assessment process. The three parts of the assessment strategy, in more detail are: (A) Unseen Final Examinations The examination consists of an unseen paper comprising of multiple choice questions, short questions, and if required a calculation paper to test pharmacological knowledge, application to practice and analytical reasoning. The student is allowed the use of a BNF and calculator. The students also complete a 100% pass/refer medication calculation paper. (B) Critical review The student submits a critical review of a drug from the students specific scope of prescribing practice. This must be evidence-based and detail the physical examination, monitoring and investigations that need to be undertaken. There should also be evidence of reflection on the influence of co-morbidities. It also provides evidence for the Prescribing practice portfolio. (C) Prescribing practice portfolio and designated medical practitioner s supervisory report
5 Each student is provided with an assessment of practice portfolio containing pages for self-assessment, negotiated student/designated Medical Practitioner (DMP) learning contract. Assessment is set against the Single Competency Framework with the student s outcomes mapped against each of the 72 competencies being assessed and signed off by the DMP. As part of the final assessment the DMP is required to complete a declaration (pass/refer) that the student has completed the designated clinical supervision to their satisfaction and in their opinion is fit to practice as an independent and supplementary prescriber. This portfolio includes supporting evidence that the learning outcomes and competencies have been met this may take the form of reflexive accounts of critical incidents, documented observation, extended reading, case studies etc. The portfolio is submitted for marking and moderation at the end of the module. This is assessed for evidence of satisfactory completion of the minimum period of supervision (15hrs) which is certificated by the DMP and achievement of all elements required to evidence the Single Competency Framework. Please note that it is ONLY after successful completion of all elements of the module and it has been annotated on the professional register with the relevant regulatory body that the individual will have the authority to undertake independent prescribing within their scope of prescribing practice. INDEPENDENT PRESCRIBING PREPARATION The following preparation is suggested prior to commencement of the module: 1. Improve your knowledge on: (a) Anatomy and physiology particularly on cell membrane transport and cell metabolism (b) Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics by reading, for example McFadden R 2009 Introducing Pharmacology for nursing and healthcare. Pearson, to refresh their knowledge of these aspects of prescribing (c) Applied pharmacology/therapeutics in your area of clinical practice (d) General numeracy / drug calculations, such as conversions, dilutions and drip rates. 2. Update yourself on the current situation on non-medical prescribing through reviewing: Your employer s own Non-medical Prescribing policy. 3.
