In addition, there must be an appreciation of the need for lifelong learning, and the need to apply advances in relevant knowledge. The course seeks to develop an understanding of the basic concepts of dental public

2 health, the major health problems (and their determinants) of a community, the organisation of health services, research methods including epidemiology and methods of control and prevention of oral and dental diseases. 17. Educational objectives of the programme/programme outcomes The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate extended knowledge and understanding and advanced skills in the following areas: Knowledge and understanding The programme provides a knowledge and understanding of the following which are relevant to dental public health: Epidemiology Health Promotion Medical Statistics Sociology and Psychology Health Economics Health Care Systems Services Management, Planning and Evaluation Evidence-Based Practice Demography Research Methodology Professional Responsibility For the face to face format (internal) Public Health placements. Intellectual skills: Analyse and appraise scientific evidence. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the underlying philosophy of public health and dental public health, and in particular the underlying social, economic and political determinants of health. Statement of how the programme has been informed by the relevant subject benchmark statement(s)/professional and statutory body guidelines The course has been benchmarked against published competencies in Dental Public Health in developed countries. 19. Programme structure and award requirements (where relevant the information should also differentiate the particular requirements of pathways within a programme or linked/exit awards) (a) numbers of compulsory and optional units to be taken in each year of the programme MSc: 6 core taught modules, plus a core research module. Face to face format Over 1 year students take six core taught modules and the research module over the course of the year. Over 2 years (part-time), students take six core taught modules in the first year and the research module in the second and final year. Distance learning format Students take two core taught modules in each of the three years, and the research module across the three years of the programme. 5 Students must pass all seven modules with an overall mark of 50% in each in order to be awarded the MSc. Compensation will be permitted within modules, but not between modules, provided that the mark of an individual element of assessment does not fall below 40%. The percentage weighting for the calculation of merit and distinction will directly reflect the proportion of credits allocated to each module in relation to the overall credit taken within each programme/award, with classification thresholds set according to the core scheme as set out in the Credit Framework Regulations of King s College London. Students who fail one module on the full-time route taken over two years (part-time) may be permitted to proceed to subsequent years of the degree, but must complete the outstanding module at the next examination. However, students who fail more than one module at the Year 1 will be required to complete the outstanding modules successfully before proceeding to the next year of the degree. Distance learning format Students who fail one module at any year may be permitted to proceed to subsequent years of the degree, but must complete the outstanding module at the next examination. The different patterns of attendance will be reflected in the annual tuition fee to be paid. For distance learning format: All students have the option of attending a two week residency course in each year of the programme in place of their private study, equating to a maximum of 540 learning hours delivered through seminars/tutorials, although attendance is not mandatory.

6 For each core taught module in the two formats of delivery, the assessment process involves coursework (essays) and unseen written examinations (counting for 40% and 60% of the final mark in each module respectively). Assessments are conducted in the middle (coursework) and at the end of the corresponding term (written examination). For the research module students must complete a written research report, including a word report on the literature review relevant to the project and a 3000-word scientific manuscript ready for submission to a peer-reviewed indexed dental journal.
