1 DRAFTING SYLLABUS/SCHEDULE Page 1 of 10 INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING Student Learning Outcomes (SLO s): o Manually draft a small set of working drawings for a single story wood frame residence, incorporating current drafting techniques, applying appropriate terminology on call-outs and notes, and submitting the set of drawings in the correct order according to industry standards. o Please refer to the COURSE OUTLINE (found under Course Information ) for information regarding classroom policy - MANDATORY READING Required Text: o Ching, Francis D. K. Architectural Graphics, 5 th Edition. New Jersey: John Wiley Sons, Inc., Print. (ISBN13: ) Degrees & Certificates: o Students may easily earn multiple degrees and certificates with little to no extra course work. The following link provides an easy-to-follow tab identifying courses students may take that apply to multiple certificates and degrees: Pathways for Architecture and Interior Design Certificates and Degrees o Architectural Drafting I ARCHT-110 is a required course for the following Architecture Major degrees and certificates: A.S. Degree (Official, Architectural Drafting and Technology) required units, courses, electives, and recommended electives. Certificate of Specialization (Architectural Drafting Computer Aided Drafting CAD) required units and courses. o Architectural Drafting I ID-110 is a required course for the following Interior Design Major degrees and certificates: Interior Design A.S. Degree required units and courses. Interior Design Certificate of Achievement required units and courses. Educational Planning: o All Students must complete the My Educational Plan Worksheet and complete an appointment with an Academic Counselor at the COC Counseling Department BEFORE the Spring 2014 semester o COC College Catalog COC Architecture & Interior Design Department News on Facebook (ARCHID COC) Participation: Day to day punctuality, consistent work ethic and engaged class participation is directly related to student success. Students should strive to always be prompt due to the positive character quality it reinforces. o It is the student's responsibility to submit work on time, NO LATE SUBMITTALS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Students are encouraged to get to know a classmate who can share notes when necessary. It is NOT the instructor's responsibility to re-teach a student s missed class, or missed lectures due to late arrival and/or non-attendance. As a second resource, students may access Blackboard and retrieve any given handouts relevant to a missed lecture. o It is the student s responsibility to drop the course by the drop date. Students who do not attend classes after drop date, yet fail to drop the class, will receive a failing grade. o The instructor will drop a student who does not show up the first day of class; this is a No Show Drop mandatory according to Title 5 Standards. o The instructor will drop a student due to excessive tardiness, or three (3) or more missed classes, and if the drop date passes and a student accumulates three or more missed classes. o Class participation policy is as follows: Face to face interaction and on-line interaction, both are MANDATORY to succeed in the course. Students must read all postings on Blackboard as part of their class attendance responsibility. Evaluation: Grading of quizzes, exams, and assignments are based lectures, textbook readings, and Blackboard postings. See Rubric (Found under Course Content ). 2 DRAFTING SYLLABUS/SCHEDULE Page 2 of 10 o s Value = 10% of Overall Grade ( based upon quality of 10 10% each) o Participation Value = 10% of Overall Grade Rigor/Completion (Day to day punctuality, work ethic & engaged Grading policy is based on a class participation) 100% scale divided as follows: o o o Supplies: o o Blackboard On-line Quizzes Value = 10% of Overall Grade (Quizzes based upon Assignments, Class Lectures, and Blackboard Glossary; 4 25% each) Blackboard On-line Mid-Term Exam Value = 10% of Overall Grade (Mid-Term Exam based upon Assigned Readings in Textbook: Architectural Graphics, 5 th Edition; points each; 12 Extra Credit 10 points each) s Value = 60% of Overall Grade Skill/Craft (The qualitative development and composition of a set of drawings) A = B = C = D = F = 59 and below Floor Plan, Roof Plan, Kitchen Interior Elevations, Building Section & Details, Schedules Sheet, Exterior Elevations Sheets, Electrical Plan & Legend, Site Plan/Cover Sheet, and Axonometric. Overall Accuracy and Care: Clarity/Resolve (The creation of end products that successfully demonstrate the clear and logical development of relationships, systems of order and hierarchies). Students are to make themselves aware of materials costs related to completing assignments. Studio classes require the use of drafting/design tools, and boards for drawing purposes. This course requires the purchase of vellum in addition to traditional drafting supplies. Supplies may cost as much as several hundred dollars for beginning students who have NO supplies to use from previous classes. Note: Grades will not reflect or be related to the cost of materials used for presentation purposes. Grades are directly related to the quality and quantity of student s work. On-Line Course Policies: o Students must check the Blackboard 2014 SPRING ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING HOME PAGE at least twice weekly to be abreast of Postings, Announcements, Vocabulary, Industry Media, Articles, Assignments, Handouts, and Quizzes. o Student must check their COC Student account daily for important course-related messages from the instructor. o Students may the instructor with any concerns, problems, questions or issues: ninabriggsis@yahoo.com. Type COC Architectural Drafting in the subject line of s to the instructor, and practice Netiquette in all on-line communication. Student s will be responded to within 48 hours. o The instructor is not responsible for students computer or internet malfunctions. If Blackboard malfunctions, immediately inform Blackboard Support: bbsupport@canyons.edu; o Academic honesty is MANDATORY in class, and while taking the on-line quizzes and exams. o Blackboard & Student Accountability Online Use of online programs such as Blackboard is strictly limited to the students who are enrolled in that particular course. Individual login information is provided to each student and all activity within an online course is monitored and recorded. To insure the highest level of integrity of student data, user login and password information must never be shared. It is the student s responsibility to take every measure possible to safeguard their individual login information, never allowing other persons (whether a student or not) to have access to this information. Each student must submit his or her own work. Sharing login information or submitting work under another user s identification is a violation of College policy and may result in a formal report of the incident to the Dean of Students. It is extremely important that these lettered items be exact, reliable, and entirely legible in order for the user to have confidence in them and never have any uncertainty as to their meaning. Draw the interior elevations of the kitchen at a scale of 1/2" = 1'-0" onto an 18x24 sheet of vellum with a preprinted title block. Follow the directions, as listed on the Assignment 7 handout.
