1 Churchtown Curriculum Statement Imagine, Believe, Achieve At Churchtown Primary School we are committed to meeting the requirements of the New National Curriculum 2014 and as such our schemes of work and planning have been updated to reflect this change. Our vision is to provide an innovative, inspiring learning community where - Learners are engaged through stimulating, relevant and inspiring educational experiences that ignite a life long passion for learning. - Innovative personalised teaching and learning = learner success - We are the cultivators of curiosity and enquiry, we spark imagination, awe and wonder and open minds. - Learners questions are the real seeds of learning - We provide sustainable, accessible technology - Learners have a voice, their opinion is valued and they lead their own learning - Learners become knowledgeable and learn new skills through taking risks and being innovative - We nurture caring relationships, connections and a sense of belonging to our local and global communities - We promote a culture of inclusion - We foster a safe and supportive learning community Our school has six values which are embedded within our school community and curriculum, they are :- - Respect for all - Love of learning - Friendship and Family - Fun and happiness - Skills for life - Growth and Development We believe our values underpin the fundamental British values of - the rule of law: respect and obey the law - mutual respect; respect the rights of others, including their right to their own opinions - democracy; treat others with fairness - look after yourself and your family - look after the area in which you live and the environment - individual liberty - tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
2 At Churchtown we promote the fundamental British Values throughout our curriculum and in our SMSC and SRE. As a school we have at the heart of our curriculum our Curriculum Drivers. These drivers will be found on our Medium and Short Term planning documents and allow us to plan opportunities to develop these skills explicitly within the curriculum. Our drivers are :- Independence Diverse Community Real life Purpose The curriculum we have developed allows children to question and explore all subject areas through a broad theme which is open ended, the rationale behind this is to encourage creativity, risk taking and genuine discovery. Each Year group have developed the following learning themes which will promote the above values and aim to prepare our children for the future. 3 Below is a short curriculum statement for each subject area which encapsulates our school s vision :- Marvellous Mathematicians. We aim to inspire and engage our Marvellous Mathematicians to develop their understanding of number and equip them with the skills to solve real life mathematical problems and challenges. Digital Creators We aim to develop the code breakers, code makers and digital leaders of the future. Our children learn how to manage, adapt and create their own digital content through exciting activities such as programming and coding. Our digital literacy is fostered in an environment which promotes an understanding of how the digital and online world works, and how this can be used safely and developed in the future. We prepare our children for the challenging and creative digital world that awaits them. Little Historians We aim to inspire and engage our Little Historians to develop their historical thinking, be inquisitive, wonder why, seek answers and complete research to develop their historical understanding of local, British and World History. The Next Generation PSCHE We aim to encourage children to become confident, independent thinkers and learners: to respect themselves and others, form positive relationships and make good choices, so they can learn how to deal with a range of emotions to be able to grow, develop and become responsible, healthy adults. Young Discoverers - Inspiring scientists of the future. We encourage all children to raise questions about the world around them by providing exciting, practical science activities which engage children, leading them on their journey of discovery through science.
4 The magic of Art Art, design and crafts allow a child s imagination to soar. They can express their creativity in an exciting, vibrant way. Line, colour, shape, texture and history are explored to create items of beauty. Creators DT We aim to inspire our 'creators' to take risks, become resourceful and innovative by using creativity and imagination to design and make high quality products for a wide range of users, developing an understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Understanding the World Churchtown pupils are keen explorers. They find out about and question the world around them. Our Geographers learn to appreciate and look after our planet. Over time pupils curiosity helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Confident speakers and attentive listeners At Churchtown we use language to communicate confidently with other individuals, in small and large group situations and in a variety of contexts. A passion for reading We aim to develop a passion for reading which inspires children to read for enjoyment, interest, understanding and study. At Churchtown we use a number of reading schemes which help us encourage our children to develop a love of reading, the main one being Oxford Reading Tree. A flair for writing We want children to communicate effectively in writing in a wide variety of forms appropriate for different purposes and audiences. At Churchtown we follow the Letters and Sounds document to support our phonics teaching. Aspiring Athletes We aim to promote confidence and competence in movement, coordination and control whilst encouraging enjoyment for individual and collaborative participation in physical activities. We aim to promote a love for physical activity through opportunities to participate and compete in gymnastics, dance, athletics, games, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming.
5 Future Linguists We encourage our children to be aware of and embrace the languages of other countries. We offer opportunities for the children to become immersed in the culture and to explore ways to communicate through songs and rhymes. Religious education at Churchtown encourages children to ask challenging questions about their own and others religions and traditions whilst promoting the development of self-awareness, respect for all, openmindedness and appreciation and wonder.
