10 Storwize V7000 Easy Tier Dynamically re-distributes active data across a hybrid storage pool of Solid- State Devices (SSDs) & hard disks based on workload characteristics Monitors access to extents and analyses history to promote hot extents and demote inactive ones Supports both internal SSDs and SSDs in virtualized disk systems Helps improve storage system performance Helps reduce cost by automatically placing only most active data on SSD, reducing need for SSD capacity Easy Tier can improve throughput up to 200% and reduce response time up to 60% with only about 10% of total capacity on SSD* SSD HDD Automatic relocation 10

12 Storwize V7000 Easy Tier Easy Tier - OFF Easy Tier can be turned off. No statistics are recorded or extents will be moved. Evaluation Mode If you turn on Easy Tier in a single tiered storage pool, it runs in evaluation mode, which means it measures the I/O activity for all extents. A statistic summary file is created and can be offloaded from the IBM Storwize V7000, and this file can be analyzed with the IBM Storage Tier Advisory Tool. Automatic Data Placement Mode This operating mode is enabled by default if you create a multitiered storage pool. On all volumes inside the multitiered storage pool, Easy Tier is also set to On. The extents are migrated dynamically by the Easy Tier processes to achieve the best performance. The movement is transparent to the host server and applications, and it only provides increased performance. 12

13 Storwize V7000 Thin-provisioned volumes Traditional ( fully allocated ) virtual disks use physical disk capacity for the entire capacity of a virtual disk even if it is not used With thin-provisioning, Storwize V7000 allocates and uses physical disk capacity when data is written Dynamic growth Without thin provisioning, pre-allocated space is reserved whether the application uses it or not Available at no additional charge with base virtualization license Support all hosts supported with traditional volumes and all advanced features (EasyTier, FlashCopy, etc.) Reclaiming Unused Disk Space With thin provisioning, applications can grow dynamically, but only consume space they are actually using When using Volume Mirroring to copy from a fully-allocated volume to a thin-provisioned volume, Storwize V7000 will not copy blocks that are all zeroes 13

15 Storwize V7000 Thick to Thin migration Write data Create a fully Allocated Volume of 2TB in Storage Pool 1 (2 TB allocated) : Map the Volume to the host Start application which uses only 0.5TB of data in the Volume 2 TB 0.5TB SDD To start Thick to Thin migration, add a Thin-Provisioning Secondary copy to the Volume : In background SVC starts a synchronization between the 2 Volume copies by copying only data (0,5TB) : At the end of the synchronisation, only 0,5 TB are allocated on storage Pool 2 Virtual capacity 0.5TB 2 TB Then, Primary copy can be deleted and space de-allocated (2TB) : SAN SVC / Storwize V7000 Allocated 2TB Used : 0,5TB Storage Pool 1 : 3TB 0.25TB 0.25TB Allocated : 0,5TB = Used : 0,5TB Storage Pool 2 : 3TB
