1 Our Lady Queen of Peace Rights Respecting School Policy As a Rights Respecting School, our pathway to a successful future is grounded in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Our School is a Rights Respecting school and Article 42 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) underlines our RRSA Policy: Governments should make the convention known to children and adults A42

2 MISSION STATEMENT We are a Catholic, co-educational school seeking to promote, throughout the school community, a caring ethos. Through the development of positive and secure relationships, within and outside the classroom, we create the opportunity for our children to thrive in a rich and varied environment. In achieving this we recognise that each child is a valued and unique member of God s community. SCHOOL AIMS In our loving Catholic ethos we aim, To promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, intellectual and physical development of our pupils. To give each pupil an awareness of his/her talents, skills and abilities. To provide opportunities for pupils to achieve success in a variety of contexts, promoting positive self-esteem and self-image. To create a love of learning, a knowledge of how to learn, and the motivation to produce his/her best work. To provide a broad and balanced curriculum appropriate to the needs of each pupil at his/her stage of development. To develop an attitude which leads to self-discipline, independence, courtesy, good manners and respect for everyone. To develop a wider understanding of the wider world in which we live, of the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations, and a tolerance of other religions and ways of life. To foster and develop close relationships between home, school and community.

3 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) The Convention sets out the rights of children in 54 Articles. These basic rights encompass survival, right to have rights, protection, development and participation. The UNCRC is underpinned by 4 principles: 1. non-discrimination 2. commitment to the best interest of the child 3. the right to life, survival and development 4. respect for the views of the child Rights are universal and cannot be taken away. The main responsibility for ensuring that all children enjoy their rights lies with the adults. All rights are equally important. Core Learning Values In Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary School, in celebration of partnership, the staff, governors, parents and pupils will strive to create an educational setting which enables our pupils to grow in wisdom, understanding and mutual respect. As a Rights Respecting School, our pathway to a successful future is grounded in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). A4, A6. With the support and co-operation of parents, we promote positive behaviour encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own actions. The relationship between pupils and staff is enhanced by mutual respect and consideration on both sides. Effective behaviour management ensures pupils are safe and that effective learning and teaching can take place within the learning environment. This allows the school to run smoothly with minimum disruption and distraction. A12, A13, A42 Rights Respecting Values underpin Leadership and Management Development as a rights respecting school is an integral part of strategic planning. All decisions are taken in the best interest of children. As school policies are reviewed; links with the values and principles of the UNCRC are made explicit. Recruitment and induction practises reflect our rights respecting ethos. Refresher training takes place annually for all staff to ensure that knowledge and understanding remains relevant.

4 The Whole School Community Learns about the UNCRC Every year group learns about the UNCRC, and view different areas of learning from a rights perspective. Displays are explicitly linked to the UNCRC. All members of the community are encouraged to be ambassadors for children s rights. Parents, Governors and the wider community are included in our work as a Rights Respecting School. The School has Rights Respecting Ethos Charters replace rules in our school. Charters are drawn up in consultation between adults and children and identify the rights that are most relevant to that situation together with the ways in which adults and children will act in order to ensure these rights are respected. All members of the community model rights respecting language. The environment is safe, physically and emotionally. Conflicts are resolved using restorative approaches where children are empowered to seek solutions to problems. Children are empowered to become active citizens and learners Pupils opinions and thoughts are sought, encouraged and respected in all aspects of the school s work. Pupil leadership is an integral aspect of the schools approach. Children are given opportunities to lead aspects of school life through a range of groups including: School Council, Eco Council. Children s Rights Council, Buddies and Prefects. Pupils are encouraged to identify themselves as Global Citizens and given opportunities to develop their knowledge and awareness of how they can have a positive impact on the world, now and in the future. Roles and Responsibilities The responsibility for Our Lady Queen of Peace being a Rights Respecting School lies with every member of the community. The main responsibility rests with the adults.
