Yet all they do is wag their tails and fall over. ~Walter Anderson S pelling These are the second grade words for the PTO Educational Challenge My hope is for all students to participate at some level. Pledge forms are due no later than Wednesday. Comprehension Skill When reading, we should notice some sentences give details. However, the most important idea of a passage is called the main idea. When we read nonfiction headings help you know the main idea. Fluency Good readers vary their reading rate when they need to. Slow down to grasp the meaning of new ideas. Speed up when the text is easy and understandable. Robust Vocabulary Pick a word to talk about each day with your child. Describe and give examples of the meaning to that word. Use the word often during the day. This week we will be discussing the following words: disability position attached assistance depend responsibility frisky affinity

2 W riting We can help children understand the idea of developing paragraphs by encouraging the adding of detail sentences. Paragraphs all have a first sentence that tells the main idea, sentences giving more details, and an indented first word. This week we will be choosing a pet to write about. They will write a main idea sentence and develop the paragraph by adding detail sentences. Example: A hamster can be a very good classroom pet. It will not be noisy during the school day because that is when a hamster sleeps. A hamster needs a cage with wood shavings covering the bottom. Some strips of soft paper will help it make its nest. A hamster also needs a water bottle and special hamster food. Many students and teachers enjoy keeping their classroom hamster fed and clean. Sentences Students will recognize sentences have two parts, a naming part and a telling part. M athematics We have been working hard to master strategies for adding quickly and effectively. Although adding is very important, solving problems is what math is really about! Having the ability to add and subtract automatically simply frees up the brain when solving problems. We want to master this ASAP. Adding strategies learned include: Counting on (+1, +2, +3) Ten facts Doubles Doubles + 1 Make a Ten (when adding 9) I am finding students are doing better at using more than one strategy when adding. Please help practice addition facts when you can. Knowing how to add any number to 10 quickly (10+4=14, 10+8=18, 10+6=16 etc) sets students up for making a 10 when adding 7, 8, or 9. For example, add 8+5 by mentally moving a couple over from the 5 so we now have Here s another example. 9+7, think about making a 10 by moving one over from the 7 or Teaching this strategy requires the use of concrete objects and physically moving them to understand it well. Just like anything it gets easier (automatic) with practice. Subway Certificates Subway has provided certificates to be used for reaching a goal. Students will earn a certificate for a free and healthy Kid s Meal when they master addition facts. I want all students to be using strategies to find sums quickly and accurately- fact fluency. I will be giving 2-minute timed tests periodically to document growth. Attached is the timed tests (level A & B). Students know all the strategies necessary to complete each level in less than 2 minutes. No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another. There will be two raffles this week for students who turn in the envelopes. Your support is huge in making this successful! My goal is 100% participation, regardless of pledge amounts. Thank you so much for your support!

3 Halloween Party I have a couple volunteers who indicated they are willing to plan and help put on Halloween party for Thursday, October 31. The party will be from 1:45-3:15. All parents are welcome to help plan the party or simply attend this party that day. Please let me know so I can facilitate the planning process. Costumes may be brought for the afternoon party and should be non-violent in nature. The party money you sent will be used for this fun event! Hartley Nature Center Field Trip We will be going to Hartley Nature Center on Monday, October 7th to learn about weather and animal sense. We will be going on this field trip regardless of the weather, so please dress your child appropriately. We will be leaving school at 9:30 and returning around 2:30. There is NO COST for the students. Please let me know if you would like to attend this field trip with us. The cost per adult is $6.00 that you will pay to Hartley when you arrive. If you have any questions, please or call. Chapter Review I am attaching the Chapter 2 Review. It is all about addition. Students may want to practice for the test by completing this. I look forward to everyone doing very well! Your child needs to bring: Comfortable shoes for walking in the woods (no sandals or crocs) A bag lunch and drink Appropriate clothes for the weather (layers) A snack for when we return to school
