3 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS About these instructions: Read these instructions carefully before using the scale. Note the warnings on the device and in the operating instructions. Always keep the operating instructions close at hand. If you sell or pass on the product, make sure to include this manual with the unit. Keep battery operated equipment out of reach of children The device is not intended for use by young children or infirm persons without supervision. The device is battery-operated. Batteries may endanger life if swallowed. For these reasons, keep the device out of reach of children. If a battery is swallowed, please obtain immediate medical assistance. General information Place the scale on a flat surface. Do not place the scale on a carpeted surface. Do not use this scale on slippery surfaces such as a wet floor. Do not store the scale in a vertical position. Do not put weights on the scale unless you are measuring them and do not store items on it. Protect the scale from moisture - do not expose to extreme humidity. Do no step or stand on the scale when your feet or body is wet. Stand in the center of the weighing area. Your feet must be placed on the metal measuring points for the scale to measure body fat and water. Do not step on the edge of the scale. Do not use the scale when the unit or glass surface is damaged. 4

4 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Batteries Never try to recharge normal batteries. There is a risk of an explosion! Store batteries in a cool, dry location. Direct heat can damage the batteries; therefore, never expose them to sources of heat (e.g. radiators) or direct sunlight. Never short-circuit the batteries. Never throw batteries into a fire. If the scale is not going to be used for long periods, remove the batteries. Immediately remove leaking batteries from the unit. Clean the contacts before inserting new batteries. There is a risk of corrosion due to battery acid! Measuring body fat The following persons should not apply the body fat measuring function of the scale: pregnant women; persons with implanted medical equipment, such as a pacemaker; this device passes a low-level electrical signal through the body which may interfere with the operation of a pacemaker; persons with a high fever; persons with swollen feet/legs or edemas; particularly hydrated or de-hydrated persons. The body fat measuring function is not designed for children under six. Never undertake your own repairs Never try to open and/or repair the unit yourself. If there is a defect contact our Service Center. Cleaning the device To clean the unit, only use a moistened, soft cloth. Use mild soap solutions or commercial glass cleaners. Avoid the use of chemical solutions and cleaning products because these may damage the device s surface or markings. Always dry the scale off completely. There is a risk of slipping! MD

5 NOTES ON MEASUREMENTS Body fat A certain amount of body fat is essential for a healthy body. A thin person can have too high of a percentage of body fat, and an overweight person might be particularly muscular and have a healthy amount of body fat. The normal body fat level varies with age and, in particular, gender. The normal value for women is around 10% higher than for men. With increasing age the body breaks down muscle mass and this increases the body fat level. These percentages are given only as a basic guideline. Please consult your doctor to determine the ideal body fat range for you. 6 NOTES ON MEASUREMENTS Body water The body of an adult person consists of 60 % water. As age increases the water ratio falls by around 10 %. Men have a higher water percentage than women, as women have a higher percentage of body fat. In general, athletes have 5 % more body water. The correct ratio of water is essential for the complete metabolic process, for healthy skin and to eliminate harmful substances (via sweat and urine). A 5 % loss of water can reduce body energy by %. Drink at least 8 cups of liquid every day. Normal percentage of body water: FEMALE MALE Child Adult Athlete Varying measuring result The measuring results may vary slightly depending on a large number of circumstances. Such factors are: Measuring after having a meal or a drink Measuring after taking a bath Measuring during menstruation Measuring after excessive exercise or sports The following factors may lead to abnormal measuring results: Osteoporosis Dialysis treatment Cardiovascular medicine Dry skin under the feet Intensive sports training of more than 10 hours per week and a resting pulse rate of below 60/min Under the age of 17 Achieving reliable measuring results In order to achieve reliable measuring results over a longer period of time, we strongly recommend creating reliable measuring conditions. Best to take the measurements in the morning after getting up. This will give you comparable results which can show you a tendency. MD

7 OPERATION How it works The body fat scale MD displays the percentage of body fat and body water in relation to the total body weight. The electrodes under the standing platform send out a mild, safe electrical current to measure the electrical resistance of the body. Lean muscle has a lower resistance than fat and this can be correlated with body weight. The builtin computer uses this information along with your gender, height, and age to compute the percentage of body fat. The scale has up to 12 memory slots, allowing it to be used by everyone in the family without entering personal data every time. Overview of the scale 8

8 OPERATION Inserting batteries The scale requires 4 1.5V AAA batteries (included). Open the battery compartment on the rear of the scale. Insert the 4 AAA batteries. Observe the polarity as shown by the diagram in the compartment. Close the battery compartment. If the screen shows "LO" or the display's intensity lightens, the batteries must be replaced. Please note: After inserting the batteries, the scale will automatically switch itself on. While the device is being handled, it will weigh its own weight lb will show in the display. If this is the case, place the device on the floor in a stable position, then press and hold the ON/OFF button for approximately 3 seconds to switch the scale off before switching it on again. Messages in the display Below is a list of all the messages the screen displays: MD

9 OPERATION Measuring weight If the scale does not register weight within 10 seconds it switches itself off automatically. Press ON/OFF. The screen displays the most recently selected memory location (age, height, user mode); the pre-programmed number "1-12" flashes. Within 10 seconds, press ON/OFF again (after 10 seconds the scale will switch itself off). If you do not press ON/OFF again and stand on the scale, the scale will also try to measure the body fat and water. The display shows "HI ----". Wait until the display shows "0.0". Stand in the center of the scale. After a few seconds the screen indicates your weight in lb. To switch the scale off, press and hold ON/OFF for approximately 3 seconds. 10

10 OPERATION Entering personal data The scale interprets your body fat and water values on the basis of your personal data. Therefore you have to enter your personal data before measuring your body fat and water mass. 12 memory spaces are provided for this. Enter your personal data as follows: The scale will turn off automatically if you do not press any button within 30 seconds while setting the personal data. Press ON/OFF. Press ON/OFF. The screen displays the most recently selected memory location (age, height, user mode); the pre-programmed number "1-12" flashes. While "1-12" is flashing, press the UP or DOWN button to select the desired memory space. Confirm by pressing SET. The display now moves to the symbols for "male" and "female". Use the UP or DOWN buttons to select the sex and confirm by pressing SET. The display then switches to height. Use the UP or DOWN buttons to select the height and confirm by pressing SET. The display now switches to age. MD

11 OPERATION Use the UP or DOWN buttons to select the desired age and confirm by pressing SET. Display of all personal data After you entered your personal data, the selected pre-programmed number ("1-12") flashes four times, the personal data is shown and the scale turns into measuring mode ("0.0 lb is displayed). If you selected an age of 12 or below, the screen shows the child symbol in addition to the other personal data. Selecting the athlete mode If the age for the selected memory space is set between 15 and 50, you can select the athlete mode. See the box at the bottom of this page for a description of the athlete mode. In the measuring mode (when the display shows all the personal data), before you step on the scale, press the UP button. The athlete symbol appears in the display. Athlete mode Your scale has a separate setting for very fit athletes or muscular individuals. As muscle cells have a similar bio-electric resistance to fat cells the scale could interpret muscles as fat. This problem only occurs if the muscle mass is large; if a person has a normal range of muscles the scale does not measure this as fat. The athlete mode prevents this incorrect interpretation. In this mode the actual body fat values are measured using a different mathematical formula. 12

12 OPERATION Measuring weight, body fat and body water Important notes on correct measurement To measure body fat and water you have to stand barefoot on the square measuring points on the scale where the electrodes are located. Your feet must be dry and not moist. Stand on the scale with straight legs and without bending your knees; ensure that your knees do not touch each other. Measuring Press ON/OFF. The display shows the most recently selected memory space; the pre-programmed number "1-12" flashes for a few seconds. If necessary, select the desired memory space with the UP or DOWN buttons while "1-12" is flashing. When the pre-programmed number stops flashing, the scale goes into measuring mode. 1 Within 10 seconds, stand on the scale. 1. 13 The following is displayed on the screen in quick succession: Weight Body fat and water measured Percentage of body fat Percentage of body water Then the scale turns off automatically. ERROR MESSAGES The maximum weight (396 lb) has been exceeded. The batteries are low and should be changed. Error in measuring the body fat percentage. Ensure that you are barefoot and standing securely. Error in measuring the weight (overtime). The scale could not measure the weight within 20 seconds. Repeat the measurement and ensure that you stand securely. 14

These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/tv technician for help. MEDION LIMITED WARRANTY MEDION warrants to our customers that the Crofton Body Fat Scale, Item Number 5149, is free from defects in materials and workmanship as follows: for a period of two (2) years from the date of original purchase, defective parts or a defective product returned to a ME- DION repair facility or a MEDION Authorized Service Center ("ASC") for such product, as applicable, and proven to be defective upon inspection, will be exchanged for new or comparable rebuilt parts, or a refurbished product, as determined by the MEDION repair facility or the ASC. Limited warranty repair or replacement shall not extend the original limited warranty period of the defective product. This limited warranty does not cover any supplies or accessories. EXCLUSIONS: this limited warranty does not apply, and you will have no remedy hereunder with respect to (a) products that have been modified, opened, repaired or otherwise altered, except by MEDION or an ASC, (b) products that have been damaged or destroyed after delivery to the customer, (c) any third party software, interfaces, parts, supplies, peripherals or other products or any defects resulting from use of the product in connection with such third party products, (d) defects resulting from improper or inadequate maintenance, calibration or site preparation, (e) defects resulting from any misuse, ab-

Please note the following: Be sure to keep your purchase receipt in a safe place. MEDION, at its option, may require a copy of the receipt to validate the warranty period effective date (i.e. date of purchase). Warranty liability only applies to material or factory faults. It does not apply to damage due to breakage, for example, a crack in the housing. Our service includes unit exchange or send-in repair: Unit Exchange In locations where Unit Exchange is available, MEDION will send you a replacement product. You must return the defective product to MEDION (using the shipping carton that the new one came in.) Send-In Repairs In locations where Send-In Repair Service is available, repair service can be obtained by shipping your product to the MEDION Repair Center. The product will be repaired and returned to you. For either Unit Exchange or Send-In Repairs, you must have an authorized RMA number from MEDION support before shipping your defective product. Replacement products may be either new or equivalent in performance to new. MEDION replacement or repaired products may contain remanufactured parts equivalent to new in performance or may have been subject to incidental use. Out-of-Warranty Support In addition to providing free technical support during the warranty period, MEDION is also available to support your product after the warranty period has ended.
