2 Start Time (Introductory Activities for Centers) Red Light, Green Light Today we will learn that didn t always follow directions. In this game, the children will be encouraged to listen and follow directions. 1. None How To: 1. Play a game of Red Light, Green Light. The leader should be it. I have a game for us to play today. I need you all to stand on that side of the room and I will stand over here. When I say green light you walk as fast as you can to me. But if I say red light you need to freeze right where you are. Okay? Green light, (pause) red light! (You can choose to have the kids who move after red light to go back to the beginning or continue where they are.) Green light, (pause) red light! (Continue until someone reaches you.) That was so much fun. I like the way you followed the directions. Sometimes it s hard to follow directions and do the right thing. Today s story is about a man who didn t always do the right thing. 2

3 What s for Dinner? Today we will learn that had Jesus over for a meal. In this activity, the children will plan a meal for Jesus. 1. Plastic plates, cups, etc. 2. Plastic tablecloth 3. Toy food How To: 1. Ask the children what they would serve if Jesus were coming over for dinner. 2. Use the toy food, plates, etc. to set up a meal for you and Jesus. What if someone really important was coming to your house for dinner? Would you make something extra special? What if Jesus was coming to dinner? What would you make for him? Let s pretend to set up a yummy meal for Jesus. Oh, your plates all look so yummy! In our Bible story, Jesus has dinner with a man that isn t so nice. I can t wait to hear more about Jesus and this man. 3

4 Digging for Treasure In this activity, the children will be finding and collecting coins. Zaccheaus collected coins in today s Bible story. 1. Large plastic tub 2. Shredded brown paper 3. Large plastic gold coins How-To: 1. Fill the plastic tub with shredded paper and hide the coins. 2. Let the children dig in the sand for the gold coins. Before the Activity: Who wants to go digging for treasure? Come here, and I ll show you how! After the Activity: Let s count and see how many coins you found. One, two, three... Wow! You found a lot of money! A man named in our Bible Story today had a lot of money too! 4

5 Story Time (Bible Story) 1. Worship Traveling Worship: Please have the children gathered in a corner of the room and ready for worship at your designated time. This would be a great time to teach the memory verse with hand motions while you wait for the Worship Team to arrive. Also, don t forget to participate and have fun! Without Traveling Worship: When worshipping, guide children to gather around you on the floor. Some children (especially the younger ones) may wander. That s okay. They re still listening and learning! All of the songs are on your classroom CD. Don t forget to participate and have fun! 1. Yes, Jesus Loves Me 2. Jesus Loves Us Verse:...how wide (hold arms out wide) and long (reach arms out in front of you) and high (reach arms above head) and deep (make a scooping motion with your hands) is the love (hug yourself) of Christ... Ephesians 3:18. 5

6 2. Bible Story When sharing the Bible story, guide kids to gather around you on the floor. Some kids (especially the younger ones) may wander. That s okay. They re still listening and learning! 1. story images, printed on legal paper, laminated, and cut-out (tree,, Jesus) 2. Painter s tape STORYTELLER: The Bible tells us about a man named. (Hold up.) had a job where he had to take people s money to pay for things. Only did a big no-no and took WAY too much money. (Shake head no as you look at.) No-no,. No-no... Say that with me. CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: No-no. No-no... STORYTELLER: One day, heard that Jesus was coming. (Hold up Jesus picture.) REALLY wanted to see Jesus! Well, wasn t the only person who wanted to see Jesus. Everyone wanted to see Jesus! Soon, lots and lots of people were all around, and couldn t see him! So do you know what did? He climbed up in a tree so that he could see Jesus. (Tape in the tree.) And guess what! From the top of that tree, he could see Jesus! Yay! watched Jesus walk closer (move the Jesus figure closer and closer to the tree as you talk) and closer and closer until Jesus was standing right under the tree. Jesus looked up at in that tree and said, (using a kind, gentle voice) Come down. I m coming to your house today. Jesus love, and he went to his house with him. was so happy that Jesus loved him that he gave back all the money he had taken from the people. (Clap.) Yay,! Can you clap with me? 6

7 CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: (Clapping) Yay! STORYTELLER: Jesus loved even though he had done a big no-no. And guess what? Jesus loves you even when you do a big no-no! Jesus loves you and [Big Idea] Jesus loves me! [Key Question] CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: [Big Idea] Jesus loves me! STORYTELLER: Yay! [Big Idea] Jesus loves me! [Key Question] CHILDREN and STORYTELLER: [Big Idea] Jesus loves me! STORYTELLER: It s true! Jesus loves YOU! Let s fold our hands like this (fold hands) and close our eyes so we can talk to God and tell him thank you for loving us SO much! Prayer: Dear Jesus, I m so thankful that you love me. Please help me to love others and show them how much you love and care about them. Amen. (Storyteller exits.) 7

8 February 22, 2014 How Wide Table Time (Activity at the Table) 1. Die-cut hands, several bright colors, 2 hands per child 2. Rainbow colored yarn 3. Scissors 4. Clear tape 5. Heart stickers 6. How Wide Label A Activity Page, one per child 7. How Wide Label B Activity Page, one per child How-To: 1. Let the children choose two hand die-cuts and help them place Label A on one die cut and Label B on the other. 2. Cut a piece of yarn as long as the child s arm span and tape the yarn to each hand. 3. Give the children two heart stickers to place on the back of their hands. 4. Say the verse together while the children hold their hands wide, long, high, and deep. Before the Activity: Our Bible verse this month is so special! It tells us that God loves us! Can anyone say it with me? How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ Ephesians 3:18 Great job! We are going to make a special craft to help you remember the Bible verse. After the Activity: Wow! Your hands are so cool! Let s use them to say the verse together! How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ Ephesians 3:18 8

9 Zaccheaus Song 1. None Play Time (Application Activity) How-To: Teach the children the Zaccheaus song and sing it together. If you have extra time, let the boys stand up and sing it as a group, then have the girls sing it as a group. I know a pretty neat song about Zaccheaus! It even has hand motions! Can you listen to me sing it one time? Then we can all sing it together. Lyrics and Motions: was a wee little man, and a wee little man was he. (Hold pointer finger and thumb about an inch apart out in front of you) He climbed up in a sycamore tree (Make a climbing motion) For the Lord he wanted to see. (Hold hand over eyes like you re looking at something) And as the Savior passed that way he looked up in that tree. (Look up) And He said,, you come down! (Point up into the tree) For I m going to your house today. Yes, I m going to your house today. (March in place) 9
