The city enjoys abundant sunshine year-round: it has an average of about 300 sunny days per year with more than 3,800 hours of sunshine. The Nevada climate offers outdoor enthusiasts the ultimate playground. In the warmer months, Valley residents visit the nearby mountains and lakes to enjoy hiking and water sports. During the mild fall and winter months, there are plenty of activities from which to choose including many events and activities as well a great selection of golf courses. The very same bright sunshine, superb recreational opportunities and first-rate attractions that draw millions of tourists and seasonal visitors have made the Valley one of the most popular relocation destinations in the nation. 5 Las Vegas Valley THE HISTORY OF Las Vegas Fremont Street Las Vegas ( The Meadows in Spanish) was founded as a city on May 15, The Nevada Legislature created Clark County on July 1, The new county was named after William Clark, who brought the railroad to southern Nevada. Las Vegas became the county seat. At that time, Las Vegas was only square miles and had a population of approximately 800. Beginning in 1931, the construction of Hoover Dam brings an influx of construction workers which starts a population boom and gives the Valley s economy, which was in the grips of the Great Depression, a needed boost. While gambling took place illegally for many years, it was officially legalized in March 1931 by the state legislature. On a percentage basis, Las Vegas and Clark County experienced incredibly high growth rates starting in the 1930s and lasting until the Late 2000s Recession. During that period, the population of the city more than doubled in most decades. By 2000, Las Vegas was the largest city founded in the 20th century. Despite the success, the home mortgage crisis and the Late 2000s Recession affected the economic success. While the city seems to be weathering the unprecedented recession, a slow recovery is predicted. Las Vegas has still managed to host many conventions and major events. NEVADA NICKNAMES: Battle-Born State Sagebrush State Silver State Newspapers: Las Vegas Sun, , Las Vegas Review Journal, , Climate: Las Vegas climate is classified as arid (dry). It averages 294 days of Sunshine per year (211 clear days, 83 partly cloudy). Highs of 105 are common from May to September, with several days exceeding 115. 7 Transportation Registering your vehicle: Students and active duty personnel (including dependents) do not need to register their vehicles or acquire a new license in Nevada as long as the individual is not employed in the State of Nevada. Vehicles must be currently registered with the home state of valid insurance and driver s license. Out-of-state drivers and vehicle registrations can be used by new residences for up to 30 days or before the prior items expire, whichever comes first. At any time during that 30 days, they may be turned in to the DMV for Nevada documents. Monorail: From one end of the Strip to the other, visitors will be able to glide above the traffic at speeds of up to 50 mph. The system operates on a 4 mile route that runs from the Sahara Hotel to the MGM Grand. Whether you are in town for business or pleasure, check out the monorail. It s fast, fun and convenient transportation between Las Vegas strip hotels. Nevada law requires motorists to notify DMV of a change of address within 30 days of the move. Keeping your address current is important so they can send renewal notices in the mail. 16 Clark County School District Accountability Reports Accountability Reports furnished each spring to parents include statistics about a school s performance as well as achievements, highlights, awards, goals and technology use. Accountability Reports are available online from the Clark County School District s web site at on the Schools link then on School Accountability Reports. Age Requirements Nevada law requires school attendance between ages 7 and 18. Kindergarten is part of the regular school program. A child must be five years old on or before September 30 to attend kindergarten and must be six years old on or before September 30 to enter first grade. State law requires that a child must attend a state-approved kindergarten program or take a developmental assessment test to enter first grade. Enrollment In order to enroll students: Must have proof of immunizations before classes begin Parents entering their children in a District School for the first time must have identification, child s social security number, and two forms of proof of address. Proof of child s identity can be the original birth certificate or passport. Identification must be an original no copies are accepted. The required proof of address can be a recent utility bill, rent receipt, residence lease or sales contract. Telephone bills, cable bills, and driver s license are not accepted as proof of address. All students who are transferring from another school district require transcripts or report cards from the previous school. Bus Services Students who live more than 2 miles from zoned schools are eligible for bus transportation. Those who are eligible must fill out an application form requesting the service. The forms are available throughout the Clark County School District. Bus times and route schedules can be obtained through your child s school or at Students with zone variances will NOT be bused. Parents will be responsible for the child s transportation to and from school. Meals at School All schools give students the opportunity to purchase breakfast and hot lunches. Elementary schools average $1.00 for breakfast and $1.50 for lunches. Middle/High Schools average $1.25 for breakfast and $2.00, $2.50 or $3.00 for lunches. For students in kindergarten through the 8th grade, applications for free or reduced-price meals can be found at the school s office or cafeteria. High School Graduation Requirements Immunizations Nevada law requires that children in kindergarten through grade 12 are current with their immunizations before they are allowed to enter school. Parents/guardians are to bring immunization records with them to school when they register their child. A child will not be allowed to attend school without documentation of immunizations. Exceptions are permitted for religious objections, which requires a letter from the parent or guardian stating the religious objection, or for a medical condition, which requires a letter from a health care provider. For the new school year, students must be up to date with all required immunizations. Students entering 7th grade also must have the recently-mandated Tdap vaccine which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, or whooping cough. Students new to Nevada are required to have immunizations for hepatitis A and B, and varicella (chicken pox). If a child has had chicken pox, the parent or guardian must sign a Verification of Disease form, which is available at each school. A second dose of MMR is required for all kindergarten and first-grade students. Contact the Clark County Health District at for more information. To graduate from the CCSD, students must complete their required course work and pass the Nevada High School Proficiency Exams in reading, writing and math. (A science exam will be added for the class of 2010).
