YOUTH MINISTRY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM 2015/2016

INTRODUCTION FROM THE ARCHBISHOP The Youth Ministry Partnership Program is an initiative being launched out of Catholic Youth Services as a way to both build up youth ministry across the Archdiocese and ensure that the coming World Youth Day in Krakow in 2016 is one of lasting value that connects young people back into parishes and to the life of the Church. The program is a partnership between parishes and Catholic Youth Services. Parishes volunteer to take on the program, and Catholic Youth Services will work with them to support and guide the young person/people to undertake the work of a youth ministry coordinator across the service period of twelve months and as a result receive some financial support towards their World Youth Day pilgrimage. The Youth Ministry Partnership Program provides young people a significant opportunity to make a difference by taking responsibility for the vital work of ministry to young people. It gives young people a taste for youth work and it gives parishes a taste of what can be achieved with a youth ministry coordinator. I encourage both parishes and young people to be generous in considering the Youth Ministry Partnership Program. My hope is that it receives an enthusiastic response and can become a real asset in the lead up towards, and the follow up from, so many of our young people travelling to World Youth Day in Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP Archbishop of Sydney CONTENTS WHAT IS THE YOUTH MINISTRY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (YMPP)? 3 KEY YMPP DATES 4 DONATION DETAILS AND PROGRAM TIMING 5 ACHIEVABLE GOALS 6 ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES 7 YOUTH MINISTRY 8 YOUTH MINISTRY IDEAS 9 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 11 APPLICATION PROCESS 14 APPLICATION FORM 15 YMPP VOLUNTEER AGREEMENT 17 STILL NOT SURE ABOUT YMPP?

WHAT IS THE YMPP? KEY YMPP DATES DATE NOTES 31 July 2015 Applications for the YMPP open 28 August 2015 Applications for the YMPP close at 5pm The Youth Ministry Partnership Program (YMPP) is an exciting initiative which gives young people who want to attend World Youth Day 2016 the chance to serve in a parish whilst receiving a substantial donation towards their World Youth Day costs. The program is designed to benefit both the youth attending World Youth Day as well as the parish in which they will serve. The YMPP is a volunteer agreement negotiated between a parish and a young person aged 18 to 34 years. The program will require the young person to volunteer a designated number of hours as a youth ministry coordinator (YMC) at a parish over a 12 month period commencing October 2015 through to September In return, the Parish will contribute the agreed amount towards the cost of the participant s pilgrimage to WYD 2016, Krakow, Poland. As part of the YMPP the YMC will also be expected to attend quarterly formation evenings and provide brief monthly summaries to discuss the progress of their partnership and specifically any concrete ways that Catholic Youth Services can be of greater support to them in their role. The YMC s will also be encouraged to start their time by attending a Youth Ministry Training Conference from Sept 2015 held at the Benedict XVI Retreat Centre. This conference should be paid for by the parish. The quarterly formation gatherings, World Youth Day pilgrim formation evenings and the Training Conference do not form a part of the volunteer YMPP hours. The youth ministry that is undertaken will be conducted in consultation with and based on the goals of the parish priest (and/or relevant parish stakeholders) and his vision for the youth ministry in the parish. Catholic Youth Services will also offer continuous support and guidance to both the parish and the YMC during the partnership period and beyond. The YMC will also have the opportunity to apply to become a group leader for their chosen World Youth Day pilgrimage and the Archdiocese will provide a further donation of $1500 towards their pilgrimage if successful. In this case the YMC will also be expected to attend the additional group leader formation nights which will not form a part of their volunteer hours at the parish. Early September 2015 September October 2015 Interviews and appointments to take place. Agreement of how youth ministry will be conducted as well as hours of service etc. to be negotiated in this time period. Catholic Youth Services will be available to assist in interviews and selection process YMC to attend Youth Ministry Training Conference YMC to officially start role 2 November 2015 First core formation night 29 February 2016 Second core formation night 15 March 2016 WYD pilgrim formation night 2 May 2016 Third core formation night 17 May 2016 WYD pilgrim formation night 22 June-3 July 2016 WYD pilgrim formation night (on one of those nights only) July-August 2016 WYD Krakow!!!! 29 August 2016 Fourth core formation night September 2016 Partnership debrief and where to from here? 3 4

DONATION DETAILS & PROGRAM TIMING ACHIEVABLE GOALS Each parish priest will be responsible for negotiating the donation and terms for the YMPP with their chosen YMC/s. They will have a choice from the following options, all of which will run over a 12 month period from October 2015 to September 2016: a) $5000 Donation: Volunteer 5 hours per week for a total of 260 hours b) $2800 Donation: Volunteer 3 hours per week for a total of 156 hours c) $1000 Donation: Volunteer 2 hours per fortnight for a total of 52 hours Each of the above donations and time frames can be split further between two YMC s instead of just one at the discretion of the parish priest. The donations in this case will work as follows: e) $2500 Donation each: Volunteer 2.5 hours per week for a total of 130 hours each f) $1400 Donation each: Volunteer 3 hours per fortnight for a total of 78 hours each g) $500 Donation each: Volunteer 1 hour per fortnight for a total of 26 hours each Each parish may also choose one of the above options more than once in order to have a greater number of people serving at the parish. E.g. A parish that may want to opt for 4 people serving in their youth ministry may choose option (f) twice meaning they will have 4 people each serving 3 hours per fortnight for a donation of $1400 each, or, they might choose option (a) and engage two people each at five hours per week for a donation of $5000 each. The above donation and hourly service options are diverse so as to take into account the goals and vision for youth ministry in each individual parish with varying budgets, needs and also the amount of service time that the chosen YMC is available to commit to. FUNDING It is up to each parish as to how they will fund the donations for the young people they engage in the YMPP. Some parishes may use pre-existing funds and others might engage the parish community in fundraising and donating in order to build up youth ministry. Such donations may include a pledge of 12 monthly payments by members of the parish community to help fund the parish youth ministry. These initiatives will also promote greater parish involvement and sense of community. Each of the program s service options allow for a varying number of realistic youth ministry goals which can be achieved within the 12 month service period. Such goals will vary with each parish and depend significantly on support that the parish can offer e.g. resources, setting up a youth committee etc. as well as the particular style and skill set of the young person who is engaged. Neither the parish or the young person should think that everything possible will be able to be achieved. The following highlights some of what may be possible depending on the chosen service option: OPTIONS A/E (TOTAL OF 5 HOURS PER WEEK) Planning and running a weekly youth group/prayer group/youth session/social outing Starting up a youth choir Coordinating occasional larger/one off parish events (social justice initiatives, trivia night, fundraising, social outing, prayer nights etc.). Such events could be realistically organised 2-4 times within the 12 month timeframe. Running a parish social media presence Starting up a youth committee Organising young people to attend/support various social justice initiatives or Archdiocesan youth events as a parish group OPTIONS B/F (TOTAL OF 3 HOURS PER WEEK) Planning and running a fortnightly youth group/prayer group/youth session/social outing Running a parish social media presence Coordinating occasional larger/one off parish events (social justice initiatives, trivia night, fundraising, social outing, prayer nights, etc.). Such events could realistically be organised 1-2 times within the 12 month timeframe. Organise to attend/support various social justice initiatives or Archdiocesan youth events as a parish group OPTIONS C/G (TOTAL OF 2 HOURS PER FORTNIGHT) Planning and running a monthly youth group/prayer group/youth session/social outing OR Running a weekly rosary/adoration hour or social outing OR Coordinating occasional larger/one off parish events (social justice initiatives, trivia night, fundraising, social outing, prayer nights, etc.). Such events could realistically be organised once within the 12 month timeframe. 5 6

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES YOUTH MINISTRY COORDINATOR (YMC) The YMC is required to adhere to the details of the contract as negotiated with the parish priest/administrator of the parish in which the YMC is serving. Please see the copy of the contract at the end of the booklet for specific details of YMC responsibilities. PARISH PRIEST/ADMINISTRATOR The parish priest / administrator will be responsible for negotiating the service details with the YMC according to the parish s youth ministry needs and goals. The following highlights the role of the parish priest/administrator during the YMPP: Confirm specific contract details with YMC Adhere to the hours and donation details of the YMPP as specified in the contract Give clear instructions to YMC regarding ministry vision and parish ministry goals Guide and direct the YMC in their ministry or advise them of who their regular parish support person will be Support YMC with adequate resources/budget needed to complete goals Fund YMC s Youth Ministry Training Conference,18-20 September CATHOLIC YOUTH SERVICES As the Archdiocesan agency for youth and young adults, Catholic Youth Services will be the main support network for both the YMC and parish priest for the duration of the YMPP and beyond. The following highlights the role of Catholic Youth Services during the YMPP: Assist parish priest/administrator in the processes involved in obtaining a suitable YMC for the parish Provide adequate training and support to YMCs in regards to ministry ideas and carrying out of ideas Liaise with parish priest and other parish stakeholders in regards to ways that the agency can be of greater support to the YMC and parish youth ministry Be in regular monthly contact with YMC and priest (or designated parish contact) regarding YMPP progress YOUTH MINISTRY Show, by your life, that it is worth giving your TIME AND TALENTS in order to attain high ideals, it is worth recognising the DIGNITY OF EACH HUMAN PERSON, and it is worth taking risks for CHRIST AND HIS GOSPEL. POPE FRANCIS - FAREWELL, WYD RIO DE JANEIRO, 2013 Our hearts and minds are yearning for a vision of life WHERE LOVE ENDURES WHERE GIFTS ARE SHARED WHERE UNITY IS BUILT WHERE FREEDOM FINDS meaning in truth and WHERE IDENTITY IS FOUND in respectful communion. 7 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HOW OLD MUST APPLICANTS BE FOR THE YMPP? Applicants must be years of age at the start of the YMPP in October SHOULD APPLICANTS TALK TO THEIR PARISH PRIEST ABOUT THE YMPP? Yes. Parishes have received this information about the YMPP, however, sometimes it is difficult for them to look for appropriate candidates or to work out which option may best suit the parish youth ministry. Those who are interested should speak to their parish priest as they are potentially opening the parish up to consider the YMPP. HOW LONG IS THE YMPP? The YMPP service period lasts 12 months (October 2015-September 2016) with hours varying from 1-5 hrs/week depending on resources of the parish and availability of the YMC. CAN THE YMC GET THE DONATION PAID INTO THEIR BANK ACCOUNT? No. The YMPP donation will only go towards helping fund the YMC s pilgrimage to WYD. CAN THERE BE MORE THAN ONE YMC FOR THE YMPP? Yes. The parish priest can negotiate the number of YMC s he would like based on the costs and volunteer hours outlined in this document. WHAT IF THE PARISH ALREADY HAS AN EXISTING YMC? This would be a good opportunity for the YMPP participant to serve under the guidance of the current Youth Ministry Coordinator and provide them with support. It is up to the parish priest to decide whether the participant works under the YMC or another parish representative. If the parish already has a volunteer YMC this might be an opportunity for the parish to support them by having them enter into the YMPP. CAN A PAID YMC PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM? Yes. If a parish priest wants their YMC to attend WYD, the partnership will provide further formation and support. It is up to the parish priest to decide whether the YMPP hours fall within their current work hours or whether they need to complete additional hours. CAN THOSE WHO WORK OR STUDY FULL TIME REALISTICALLY ENROL IN THE YMPP? Yes. Each parish already has many other ministry leaders who work/study fulltime and also serve the parish outside of work hours. All meetings, formation and training sessions will be conducted out of business hours so that full time students/workers can participate in the program. WHAT IF A PARISH DOESN T WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE YMPP? In this case Catholic Youth Services will forward your application to other nearby parishes looking to participate in the YMPP. CAN A PARISH ENGAGE APPLICANTS WHO ARE NOT IN THE PARISH AND/ OR CAN YOUNG PEOPLE APPLY TO BE A YMC IN PARISHES WHICH ARE NOT THEIR OWN? While there is obvious benefit to a parish engaging a young adult parishioner it is not completely necessary. Many parishes engage staff who are not parishioners, and the applying for and appointing of a YMC should be viewed in the same way. It is much more beneficial for a parish to ensure they have the right young person for the task. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING THE WORD OUT REGARDING THE YMPP? The service positions will be advertised through Archdiocesan channels with Catholic Youth Services being the main channel. Parishes interested in the program will also be advertising through their channels. Finally, as covered in the earlier question, any participants interested in applying for the program should also make contact with their parish priest and/or Catholic Youth Services. WHICH PILGRIMAGE CAN PARTICPANTS TRAVEL ON? You may choose from any of the four Sydney Archdiocesan pilgrimage options; however, it would be good to speak with your parish priest to see whether there is one specific pilgrimage that he may like the whole parish to attend, including the YMC. The YMPP donation is only available for those who choose to travel on one of the Sydney Archdiocesan pilgrimages DOES THE YMC NEED TO ATTEND THE WHOLE PILGRIMAGE FROM START TO FINISH? Yes. All YMC s must attend all aspects of the elected pilgrimage. There may be an opportunity to continue with your own travel in Europe after our WYD pilgrimage is finished

WHAT IF A PARTICPANT CAN T ATTEND WYD? The YMPP is a volunteer program designed for people preparing for WYD If a YMC can t attend WYD 2016 they can still register for the program so that they can take advantage of the formation, training and opportunity to serve. However, there is no cash payment or compensation for any YMC who cannot attend WYD Krakow WHAT IF A PARTCIPANT IS UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE YMPP SERVICE PERIOD? As this is a volunteer arrangement a person may pull out of the YMPP if the need arises. A participant may be able to negotiate alternate arrangements with their parish priest but they should reasonably expect that they will be able to complete the YMPP, especially after WYD. If for some reason the YMC needs to withdraw after WYD they may be liable to repay a percentage of the cost of the pilgrimage, based on the hours remaining in their volunteer agreement. WHAT HAPPENS IF A PARTCIPANT GETS SICK FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME DURING THE YMPP? That person should inform their parish priest and they may be able to negotiate a suitable alternative agreement. IF A YMC LEAVES THE YMPP MID-PROGRAM OR BEFORE WYD, WILL THEY GET PAID ANYTHING FOR THE TIME CONTRIBUTED? YMPP is a volunteer program which runs for twelve months. If a YMC withdraws from the program early there should not be any expected compensation or remuneration. If the parish priest terminates the YMC from the YMPP for any valid reason including inappropriate behaviour or failure to adhere to the YMPP contract the parish will not provide compensation or remuneration for time served. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF CATHOLIC YOUTH SERVICES IN THE PROGRAM? As the Archdiocesan youth agency, Catholic Youth Services will offer a range of support services for both the YMC and parish. These will include providing ministry opportunities such as camps and events, assisting with retreats, providing relevant youth ministry resources, and mentoring YMC s via the formation nights and regular monthly progress calls. HOW CAN THE PARISH SUPPORT THE YMPP? The parish can encourage youth and young adults who may already be involved in ministry to apply for the program. The parish could support the YMC s with mentors who may be interested in sharing their knowledge and experience. Most importantly, the parish could also provide prayer support throughout the partnership.
