T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 1.1 GOD IS CREATOR: LESSON OPENER (5 MINUTES) OPTION 1: MAKE YOUR OWN CREATION Notes: WHAT YOU LL NEED: Art supplies for each child (e.g., play dough, paper, crayons, markers, pipe cleaners, sheets of aluminum foil) STEP 1: Give each child a set of art materials and give them a few minutes to make their own unique creation with the materials (e.g., pipe cleaners shaped into animals, foil hearts, flowers). STEP 2: Ask a few kids to share about their creations. Then start a discussion asking the kids why they chose to create what they did and what they hope to do with their creation now. Will they take it home? Give it to a friend? Hang it on a wall? STEP 3: Take one of the kids creations and say it is yours now, and you will take it home and use it for some silly purpose other than what the child intended to do with the creation. Continue the discussion by asking how they would feel if you took their creation without asking and used it for your own purpose. Share these important concepts: A. When you create something, you own it. You are in charge of it. You chose what you wanted to make for a certain reason and you decide what you will do with it. B. It s the same way with God. God created the world and each one of us for a very special reason. Continue the discussion by asking how they think God feels when we do what we want to do instead of what He made us to do. What problems might come if we don t do what God made us to do? STEP 4: Transition to the main lesson by saying, Today we re going to learn about why God made us, and what we can do to live for God. Open in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you and the kids into God s truth through the lesson activities.

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 1.1 GOD IS CREATOR: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES) OPTION 1: CREATION CHARADES WHAT YOU LL NEED: Bible, Creation Charades slips (Resource Bundle), container LESSON PREP: Print and cut out Creation Charades slips. Place them in a container. STEP 1: Hold your Bible as you teach so kids know you are teaching from God s Word. Have kids recite Genesis 1:1 while you read it from your Bible. Share these key concepts: A. In the Bible, the word created means to make from nothing. B. Our powerful and awesome Creator, God, created the whole world and everything in it from nothing, and He did it in just SIX days! STEP 2: Play Creation Charades and talk about some of the things God created and why He created them. Here s how: A. Let two or three kids pull a slip from the container and act out the creation item on the paper. (Be sure to let the kids you choose know what they will be doing in case some kids are uncomfortable acting in front of the group.) The kids may need suggestions on how to act their item (e.g., the kids could act out trees by standing tall and spreading out their arms as branches or the sun and moon by holding their arms in a large or small circle overhead). B. Let the other kids try to guess what they are acting out. Then tell kids on which day God created the thing they guessed as well as the verses in Genesis 1 that correspond with that day of creation. If time permits, choose new volunteers to act out a few more slips. STEP 3: After the slips have been acted out, open your Bible to Revelation 4:11 and read it aloud. Share these key concepts: A. God created EVERYTHING! C. To praise God is to tell Him how great and powerful and awesome He is! D. God is the only one who could create the world, so He is the only one that deserves our praise. E. The second part of the verse says: and by Your will they existed and were created. This means that God chose what He wanted to create. He created everything for His own special reasons. STEP 4: Choose a few of the creation items from the game and talk about why God created them. Here are sample questions and potential kid responses. Why do you think He created trees? o Trees give us shade, make our world beautiful, provide paper and wood, and give us oxygen so we can breathe. Why did God make the sun? o The sun gives us warmth and light. It tells us the time of day. When the sun sets, we know it s time for bed. Why do you think God made animals? o Some animals do work for us, provide food, and make good pets. STEP 5: Continue the discussion by asking why they think God made them and you. Let kids share ideas. Do not say whether they are right or wrong but make sure you end by explaining the reasons the Bible gives. After several kids have offered ideas, share these key concepts: A. God created humans for a different reason than He created the animals or anything else. We are the only ones that can have a relationship with God. B. God created Adam and Eve so that they could talk with God. Trees, rocks, dogs, cats, etc., can t carry on conversations. God made humans so we can have conversations with Him. In fact, God used to walk in the garden where Adam and Eve lived, and He talked with them. Today we talk to God by praying, and He talks to us through His Word, the Bible. B. We should praise God because He is the Creator. PAGE 1 OF 2

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 1.1 GOD IS CREATOR: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES) C. Read Genesis 1:27 from your Bible. Explain that we are also the only ones in God s creation that are made in His image. To be in God s image means we are made to be like Him in many ways. We can create like God can although we can t make things from nothing or by just speaking. Only God can do that! God is love, and we can love people too. God makes choices, and we also make choices. We can talk, think, and feel like Him. God created us to be like Him and to have a relationship with Him. Notes: PAGE 2 OF 2

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 1.1 GOD IS CREATOR: LESSON OPENER (5 MINUTES) OPTION 2: CREATION PAINTING Notes: WHAT YOU LL NEED: Painting to display something God created STEP 1: Hold up a painting of something God created. It could be a painting of a horse, a waterfall, a mountain, or a beach. Ask the kids these discussion questions: What is an artist? Why do you think the artist painted this picture? What materials did the artist probably use to paint the picture? Who do you think is the greater artist the one who painted this picture of the horse (or whatever is in the picture) or the one who made the horse in the first place? Why? Share these key concepts: A. God is the greatest artist ever. He made the flowers and birds and mountains and waterfalls and horses. He created the whole world and everything in it! B. When God makes something, He doesn t use paint and brushes and canvas. He doesn t need anything. He just speaks and things are made. C. God made the world for His own reasons and plan! STEP 2: Transition to the main lesson by saying, Today we re going to learn about why God made us, and what we can to do live for God. Open in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you and the kids into God s truth through the lesson activities.

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 1.1 GOD IS CREATOR: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES) OPTION 2: ANIMAL OR HUMAN? WHAT YOU LL NEED: Bible, Animal or Human? clue cards (Resource Bundle), tape, whiteboard and dry erase markers or large poster and markers LESSON PREP: Print and cut out the clue cards and place a tape loop on the back of each card. Draw three columns on the board or on a large poster. The heading on the first column should be Animals only. The heading on the second column should be Both animals and humans. The heading on the third column should be Humans only. Repeat the verse several times together. Ask kids to name some of the things God created. Direct them to the book of Genesis, if necessary. STEP 2: Emphasize that God made everything for His own special reasons. Then ask kids what God made on the fifth and sixth days of creation (Fifth day: fish and birds; sixth day: land animals and humans). Explain that you will do a fun activity to help them see the ways animals and humans are different and also to discover the special reason why God made us! STEP 3: Play Animal or Human? Give a clue card to each kid or just some of the kids. One at a time, let each kid bring his or her clue card to you. Read the card and let the group decide in which column to place the card. For example, the clue Can swim should be put under the column Both animals and humans. The clue May have wings to fly with belongs in the Animals only column. The clue Can talk with God belongs in the Humans only category. You could also do this activity as a game in small groups. Give each group a set of clue cards and a paper with the three columns drawn on it. Let groups race to see which group can finish with the most accuracy and speed. STEP 4: Open your Bible to Revelation 4:11 and read it aloud. Share these key concepts: A. God created EVERYTHING! B. We should praise God because He is the Creator. STEP 5: End the lesson by asking why they think God made them and you. B.
