7 The Ancestry and Immigration of Paul Thompson [7] Paul Thompson was born on 04 Oct 1847 in Sweden [1, 2] and was christened on 01 Dec 1847 [3]. Unfortunately, all of this information comes from genealogical footprints left in the United States. His ancestry and exact place of birth are unknown. I have uncovered only two clues. The first is an oral tradition that Paul s surname in Sweden was Truittson. This was relayed to me in a letter from Chuck Wickland, a grandson of Paul through his 5 th daughter Alice Maria. The second, from the Massachusetts marriage record for Paul and Emma, it indicates his parents are Lars and Chereti Jacobs. [11] But, does this mean Lars Truittson and Chereti Jacobs or Lars Jacobs and wife Chereti? Due to a lack of robust, indexed genealogy information in Sweden, I have not been able to locate Paul or trace his ancestry. And, to my knowledge, this information was not deliberately left by Paul for his descendants. It is also not known why he came to America or why he changed his surname. He is believed to have come to the United States alone without his parents or any siblings or other relations. In the 1900 United States Census, Paul reports that he immigrated to the United States in 1872 [4]. He is first seen in genealogical records in a marriage license dated 10 Mar 1879 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts, marriage records [5]. The marriage actually took place in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, and Paul reports his age as 31 years old with his wife named as Emma C. M. Freeber, age 26 [5, 11]. Paul is subsequently seen in the 1880 United States Census in Essex County, Massachusetts with wife Christina and daughter Edith, born in Massachusetts 15 days earlier [6]. Paul declared his intent to become a United States citizen on 05 May 1882 in Muskegon, Michigan, stating that he was a subject of the Kingdom of Sweden and Norway [7]. In the 1900 United States census, he is still in this status of having filed first papers for naturalization. [4] Perhaps the census was a reminder to Paul that he had not finished the process of naturalization, for on 02 Nov 1900 in Muskegon he finally becomes a citizen of the United States [8, 9]. Paul lived most of his life in the United States working as a fisherman on the Great Lakes and living in Muskegon, Michigan, although he is seen working as a laborer in a machine shop (Enterprise Brass Works) in the 1920 United States census [10]. 8 The Ancestry and Immigration of Emma Christina Friedberg Emma Christina M. Friedberg was born on 03 Mar 1852 in Jönköping, Jönköping, Småland, Sweden, to Gustave and Maira Friedberg [1, 2]. She came to the United States, presumably by herself, in She left the port of Göteborg around 03 Nov 1876 destined for Boston [2]. As described on her husband s page above, she married Paul Thompson within 3 years of arriving. Little is known of Emma s ancestry other than her parents names since Sweden lacks robust, indexed genealogy information. No evidence has been discovered that her parents or siblings accompanied her to America. 9 Interesting or Unusual Facts from Thompson History There are at least 32 descendants of Paul Thompson in the first three generations There are at least 6 generations of descendants since Paul Thompson Paul had 5 children. This first Thompson generation died out in 1975 with the death of Emma Julia Christina (Thompson) Cayan. Paul has 11 grandchildren. Members of this second Thompson generation were still living as of Paul has at least 16 great-grandchildren. There are only 7 living descendants of Paul who carry the surname Thompson my father, myself, and my 5 children. This is because there has been precisely one male in every generation from Paul down through his main (Thompson) line descendants. This hold true even for the youngest generation I have a single son named Samuel. Paul s daughter Esther Lauretta Thompson committed suicide on Christmas Eve, 1936 by drowning herself in Lake Mona near Muskegon, Michigan 3

The wife's name is different and his age is not quite right. However, the daughter Edith matches the 1900 census perfectly in name, birth month and year, and birth location [10]. Since the 1900 and 1910 census both indicate Paul and Emma were married about 1879, I believe the Christina shown in the 1880 census is really Emma [10, 11]. The 1930 census labels her as "Emma C." It is likely Christina is her middle name [12].
