The Outsider Write a short story (at least one A4 side) about somebody living their life on the outside of regular society. Why not complete this in the form of a short movie or graphic novel? Complete your Title page for The Outsiders. Make it stand out and include some detail about themes and characters from the novel! Favourite character Who is your favourite character in the novel and why? Use PEE and include as many detailed reasons as you can! Character Tree Create a character tree of all the characters and their relations to one another in The Outsiders. Be as creative as you can! PEE Write 2 PEE chains about how Johnny is presented in The Outsiders and why he is presented this way. Consider RAVE. Time Traveller Write the script of a conversation between a teenager from the 1960s and a teenager living in the present day. How are their hobbies and experiences different? Film Review Write a review of the Film version of The Outsiders, making sure to use AFOREST techniques in your answer. Compare it to the book which is better and why? 1960s Poster Create a poster with images of 1960s fashions, cars, musicians, politicians and buildings. Make links between what you know of The Outsiders and the pictures you have chosen.

Complete your title page for Speeches and Debates Include quotations from their speeches of Martin Luther King, John F.Kennedy, William Wallace, Queen Elizabeth I and details about why they gave them. Make sure it looks beautiful! Teaching others Prepare a resource to teach a Year 6 student about AFOREST, explaining each technique in it and why speechwriters use these techniques. Technology in Education Write a speech arguing for or against the idea that schools need to invest in buying more technology to help educate students for the future. Remember AFOREST. Yes We Can Download Barack Obama s Yes We Can speech from mericas/us_elections_2008/ stm. Read this speech and copy down five quotations that you think best capture Obama s message. Advertising Campaign Put together an advertising campaign for a product of your choice and create a series of advertising slogans or posters that use AFOREST for each. Speech in character Pick a character from a book or film that you have read or seen recently (ie. The Hunger Games, The Fault in our Stars). Write a speech in this character s voice about something that happens to them, trying to make sure that you capture their individual style. Make sure you include who your character is. You can even record it if you like! Room 101 Prepare a Room 101 speech about something that you truly despise. Make sure to consider AFOREST and to use a mixture of short and long sentences to create effects. Fear itself Read Franklin Roosevelt s speech The only thing we have to fear is fear itself from ardian/2007/apr/25/greatspeeches Write a PEE paragraph explaining how Roosevelt uses AFOREST to inspire his audience.

3 Y8 Short Stories HW Grid Complete your title page for Short Stories. Research some famous short story writers and include details about them and famous quotations from their stories. Make sure it looks beautiful! Hidden in Plain Sight Write a page-long description of another character who, like the landlady, can hide in plain sight. Be sure to use strong descriptive language and to explain why their disguise is so effective. The End of the Landlady Write the story of the next person to encounter the Landlady OR the story of how she was finally caught. Remember to use descriptive language and a mixture of sentence lengths. Mrs Maloney s Police Statement Write a police statement from Mrs Maloney explaining why she did what she did. Make sure to use AFOREST and to show and not tell. The World s Greatest Party Write a description of the greatest party in the world. Make sure to include similes, metaphors, a mix of short and long sentences and exciting descriptive language. Six-word Short Story Write a six-word short story like Ernest Hemingway. Attach an expanded description explaining what would happen in the full story. The Veldt Read Ray Bradbury s short story The Veldt (available online) and write a short summary of what happens in this story. Think about what Ray Bradbury s message might be. Down to a Sunless Sea Write two PEE paragraphs explaining how the description in Neil Gaiman s short story Down to a Sunless Sea creates atmosphere. Make sure to consider RAVE.

4 Y8 ARTiculate HW Grid Van Gogh Write a one sided debate arguing what you think the poem Starry Night was about. Be imaginative! Biography Pick an artist of your choice and write a detailed biography of both them and their work. You must be thorough! LRC Display Choose a piece of art that you would like to see displayed in the LRC at BFS and write a paragraph explaining why you think it deserves pride of place. Cross curricular Choose your favourite drawing, painting or sculpture from your recent Art studies and create a detailed description beginning with a complex sentence. Spellings Learn to spell the following keywords. Write each one out 5 times. Get a friend to test you next lesson. Personification Ekphrasis Onomatopoeia Enjambment Sibilance Title page Create your title page for ARTiculate. The more creative, colourful and imaginative your page, the better! I have been learning... Write a few sentences to describe what you have learnt in English this week. What one thing would you like to improve upon? What evidence supports this? Ekphrasis Write an ekphrastic poem on a painting of your choice. Make sure you stick a picture of the image in your book beneath the poem.

5 Y8 The Tempest HW Grid Costume Draw one of the characters from the play and label their costume with explanations of why you have depicted them this way. Alternatively, you could even make the costume and take a photograph of it. Summary Summarise The Tempest in six key moments you can either draw these or describe them in detail, explaining their significance. Tragedy Research the term tragedy online and write a detailed half-page definition of what it means in drama. Your definition must include modern examples and three quotations from writers on this subject. Complete your Title page for The Tempest. Make it stand out and include some detail about themes and characters from the novel. Include some famous quotations from the play. Favourite character Who is your favourite character in the Tempest and why? Write a half-page explanation of what you think is good about this character and why they are better than the others in the play. Newspaper article Create a newspaper front page describing the storm at the start of the play. This can be in tabloid or broadsheet style but must describe what happens in the opening scene. PEE Write 2 PEE chains about how the character of Caliban is presented and developed from the start to the end of the play. Consider RAVE and make sure to focus on language. Character Tree Create a full-page character tree of the main characters in The Tempest Write a brief description of each character and their relationship to one another.

6 Y8 Hold The Front Page HW Grid Complete your Title page for Hold The Front Page. Make it stand out and include some research on the journalistic field and nonfiction texts. Know your Facts! Create a poster presenting the differences between facts and opinions. Through the Ages Research the journey of journalism. What interesting information can you find out about the press? Things to consider: When did it all begin? Controverises? What have been the most famous stories ever recorded? Inspirational News Research a current news story and turn the facts into a piece of fiction. Remember your story must contain a beginning, middle and end. Film Review Write a news story to feature in a tabloid newspaper and then rewrite it to suit the conventions of a broadsheet paper. What are the differences? In the News Come up with a news story of your choice (this can be fictional or real) and record it in your favourite style. This can fulfill the form of: TV Radio Print A leisurely Read Read an entire newspaper from front to back and recall the most important information. This can be recorded in your preferred learning style such as a poster, short film or collage. News display Create a collage/ montage of current stories in the news. Make it stand out and be creative. Bonus Task: Keep a journal of your favourite news stories during this unit.
