2 How To Use This Material Our cities are in short supply of heroes these days but you have a whole youth group full of potential heroes to train up. Let s face it, super heroes are part of our culture and are getting bigger with movies like Wolverine, The Avengers, and X-Men. There is no reason we can t use our cultures fascination with super heroes to point our kids to the greatest hero of all: Jesus Christ. Welcome to Crazy fan Night! This night is designed to be an outreach to your community and a reason for your students to invite some one to their youth group. 4 How To Get The Word Out - Promoting Your Event Check List Name of Event Date of Event (check for conflicts with Church calendar) Is it In House (just for your group) Is it Outreach (you want your students to invite friends) Check List of Possible Promotions Word of Mouth (get people talking about it) Posters Post Cards (Do I have a mailing list ready?) Sign Up List (Facebook Event Page, etc.) From the Pulpit (Get your pastor to announce it) Get students to make a video announcement Radio (big event like a conference or concert) Church Bulletin (include info on how to contact you) /Newsletters from the church

7 City of Heroes Outreach Night by Paul Turner 6:30 Playing Hero Video by Skillet Idea: Set up a City Scape Background or Blue Sky background for students to take their picture at when they come in. The can do solo or group pics. Here is how we kicked off the night. 6:40 Mixers- Have Those 1. Super Heroes (Clumps) Call out a number and kids must get in a group of that number. They must gather together in that number and quickly give themselves a super group name. You can dismiss the team who cannot form that number (which is the normal rule) or ask them what their super team name they came up with and if it s any good, they can stay in the game. 2. Name That Super Theme Have a play list of super hero theme songs ready. I offer a few albums and websites at on the last page if you need some ideas. Let students band together to form super teams (as many as you would like) again and have them line up single file. Let each of the teams know that in order to answer which super theme you are playing, they must first fly (yes fly, as in Superman) around the room and the first person to tag your hand can answer. Winner could take candy out of bowl. The winning team could share a bag of candy. 3. Costume Contest Using the information students filled on the card (see next page), do a little informal interview with the heroes that are participating in the costume contest. Have students answer your questions and make them do their Super Battle Cry or Tag Line (Ex: Hulk Smash etc) It s hilarious. The girl who won our contest was Diabetic Girl and the last foe she defeated was The Pancreas! Gotta love it.

Best Battle Cry Prize Ideas: A Super Hero Movie- We gave away a dvd collection of all four Superman s, super glue (anything with the word super in it, really), super bubble gum, you get the idea. Message: There Are Times When Life Demands We Be Heroes Batman did not choose to be a hero. Life chose him to be a hero. When Bruce Wayne s parents were killed, he knew he had to do something. Say: Here is a link to a video group of people who come together to lift a burning car to save someone who was underneath. Here is the link The people in this video did not know they were going to be heroes that day. The day chose them. They could have said things like the guy is too far gone, He s dead, I m not risking my life, or This is none of my business. Instead, they did together, what not one of them could do alone. They lifted that car to save a life. Say: This is what our youth ministry is all about, doing together what we cannot do alone. Together we can rescue our friends from loneliness, drugs, bullying, and a host of other things. Most importantly we can rescue them from an an eternity without God by introducing them to Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:10 says, For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. This was a good work, an opportunity that God saw, and yes, maybe planned in advance for Hs own glory. What do we need to be every day heroes? 1. Look to do good- Their are opportunities every where 2. Act on what you know to be right- The Holy Spirit will nudge you to move when it is time and we must obey.

9 3. Team up when necessary- Don t go it alone. If you know it s too big a problem for you to handle, call in the reinforcement. Closing Heroes save those who cannot save themselves. That s what Jesus did for us. And he didn t just come to save all the good people worth saving. Read: You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6 The people who saved that man did not know whether he was good or bad, they just knew he needed saving. The man who those people saved could not save himself and we are in the same boat spiritually. Jesus suffered, died, and rose again to save us. He is the true hero. Closing Prayer.

12 Extras you might want to add Side Kick Night- Bring a guest dressed as your side kick Have kids sing Jesus Is My Super Hero from Hillsong Kids Give away Christian Graphic Novels to contest winners Have A Comic Book trivia contest Hand out What If cards like "What if Batman had super powers". Let guests use these as discussion starters for the night. Decorate your room with comic book posters, action figures, etc. Action Figure Theatre. Have some comic book action figures around and offer 2-3 people to use these figures to put on a short play. You could offer them funny scenarios like "Hulk needs to use the bathroom, what should you do?"
