The papers reflect personal activities and business interests in the New Orleans paper industry and the Massachusetts cranberry trade. None. 4 BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE Edward C. Palmer was born September 19, 1865 to Edward Palmer and Ellen (Helen) Gibbs Palmer of Wareham, Massachusetts. He had two younger sisters Maude E. ( ) and Madge (b. 1874). As young man, Edward attended Harvard University. He married Alice Atkinson, and they had one daughter, Helen (b. ca. 1905), who married James Rufus Lincoln. Upon his father s death in 1895, Edward C. Palmer took control of the family paper company, E. C. Palmer and Co. of New Orleans, La. At the time of his death on June 17, 1923, Edward had expanded the company to include two branch houses in Houston and Dallas, Texas. Maude E. Palmer owned a Cranberry bog at Clear Pond Bog in Wareham, Mass. She was also a shareholder in the South Meadow Cranberry Co. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The papers largely consist of family correspondence between Palmer family members in the first decades of the 20 th century. Letters discuss both personal and business news. Edward C. Palmer's involvement in the paper industry is documented through business papers and his letters to his mother. Business papers include a letter copybook (ca ), audit books ( ) and a notice of appointment to the company s board. Papers of Maude E. Palmer reflect her business interests in the cranberry trade through correspondence, receipts and notebooks. Lincoln family papers include family correspondence, legal papers, cards and drawings. Palmer papers consist of correspondence from her bank concerning Clear Pond Bog, the manager of South Meadow Cranberry Co., , and letters from her overseer. Palmer & Co., Lincoln family printed items and drawings, Among the printed items are notices of a "Lincoln Family Meeting" organized by the Old Colony Historical Society, 1906, a program for a riding school exhibition, and a Tulane University, New Orleans, commencement program, The Palmer children created the majority of the drawings, and they include Mother's Day cards. Ephemera includes Valentine Day and Christmas cards and Helen Palmer Lincoln's dance cards. Series IV. Palmer & Co., ca , a telephone book, undated, a notebook relating to furniture removal, and a Vassar College notebook containing production notes on the play The Duenna, Series V. Photographic Materials, c The thirty-four photographs and three negatives, which are mostly unidentified, include photographs of Edward C.
