The house was named for Ellen Sill, William Smith College class of 1927, who had died in a car accident. Twelve William Smith students lived there and did their own cooking and cleaning. In 1966 Sill House moved to 710 South Main St, the former Delta Chi fraternity house. The original Sill House on VerPlanck St was torn down in 1983, the same year that the co-op became co-ed. She and her roommate Evelyn Sanford Beran '55 solicited letters, stories, and photographs from former Sill House residents in 1955 to create the first scrapbook. Martha Lynes then updated the scrapbook in 1993 after again receiving materials and stories from former Sill House residents. 5 Collection Inventory Title/Description Sill House Scrapbook, 1955 Instances box 1 folder 1 The file contains two copies of the Sill House Scrapbook put together by Martha Gary and Evelyn Sanford, both members of the William Smith College class of The scrapbook contains photocopies of photographs, stories, and letters sent by former residents. Also included are lists of the former Sill House residents by year. Historical Note Martha (Marti) Gary and Evelyn Sanford, William Smith College class of 1955, were roommates in Sill House from After graduation they decided to put together a scrapbook on the history of Sill House and solicited former residents to send photographs, letters, and stories. This scrapbook documents the history of Sill House from Sill House Scrapbook photocopies, ca box 1 folder 2-3 This file contains photocopies of pages from the Sill House Scrapbook (1955) as well as photocopies of letters written to Martha (Marti) Gary '55 in response to her letter asking for stories and photographs about Sill House. Included are her notes, correspondence between her and college administration, flyers about reunion, letters sent to Sill House alumni/ae, and lists of former Sill House residents.
