9 Definitions Zebra sharks have zebra-like stripes as juveniles, which turn to spots in adulthood. They are found in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, and move slowly across the ocean floor. Goldfish are small freshwater fish that have many different colors, fins, and body shapes. Often kept as pets because they are hardy, they eat plants in the wild and fish food flakes in captivity. Puffer fish are named for their ability to rapidly inflate. They have four large teeth used to crush shells of crustaceans and red worms. Their skin and organs are poisonous to humans. Hammerhead sharks have uniquely-shaped heads, flat like a hammer with eyes on the sides. They have tall, pointed dorsal fins. They are fierce predators and live in warm waters. Angelfish are long and thin with long fins coming out of the top and bottom that look like wings. They are native to the Amazon region of South America and feed on small invertebrates. The seahorse is found in tropical sea grass beds, coral reefs and mangroves all over the world. They have long snouts, and a coronet on their head. They bob, rather than swim. The manta ray is the largest of the rays, weighing around 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs). It lives in tropical water and is often found around coral reefs. Touching them can cause infections and lesions. Rainbow trout have a torpedoshaped body with silver and dark blue scales. They belong to the salmon family. They live in every ocean except the Antarctic and eat plankton and small fish. Lionfish are venomous marine fish with colorful stripes, native to the warm Pacific waters. They are excellent predators that corner their prey and eat it whole. Clownfish are recognized by their orange and white stripes and live in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Unlike most fish, they aren t poisoned by sea anemones and live in them for protection.

10 Definitions Eels are elongated fish, with a wide range of sizes and colors. They live in shallow waters or dwell on the bottom of the ocean in holes. They are sometimes eaten in Asian cuisine. Tuna fish live in the ocean and are unique in that some species are warm blooded. They swim up to 72 km/h (45 mph) and are often caught as commercial fish and eaten in a variety of cuisines. Whale Sharks are tropical fish that move slowly and strain food particles from the water. They are the largest fish species, weighing up to 13 metric tons (15 tons), and can live up to 70 years. Parrotfish are tropical fish known for their large size and bright colors and found especially in Hawaii. They have many teeth which they use to feed off of coral reefs. Salmon are born in fresh water, migrate to the ocean, then return to fresh water to lay eggs. They lay eggs in the same place they were born, possibly using their sense of smell to find their way back. Butterflyfish are tropical fish that live in the reefs of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. They look like smaller version of angelfish, but lack spines at the gill covers. Note: Before doing this work, make sure the child has mastered the Parts of the Fish nomenclature, and is familiar with the definition of what a fish is. It s nice to let kids see real versions of fish when doing this work. See if you can arrange a field trip to a zoo, aquarium, or pet store. And, you can check out books with pictures and information about fish from your local library. When finished with this work, a child can pick a fish to further research, and/or paint a fish or sculpt one out of clay.
