1 YMCA OF LAUNCESTON INC PH: ADULT SOCIAL SPORTS RULES, REGULATIONS & CONDITIONS In these competitions the emphasis is on enjoyment and fitness in a social environment. While competitiveness is not discouraged, it should be remembered that novice players need some encouragement and the "win at all costs" philosophy is not appropriate. The normal rules of each sport shall apply except to the extent that they are negated or modified by these rules. All rules are open to the interpretation of the umpire / referee and their decision is final. The following outlines the rules for the YMCA of Launceston Inc Social Sports Competition. If you don't understand any of these rules, please ask YMCA Staff to explain them either before the game starts or during any breaks. Please respect YMCA Staff /Umpires/Referees/Players: Umpiring/refereeing is a very difficult job and requires a great deal of focus during the game. Please do not question a call or even seek an explanation of a call during the game itself. Instead, you should save your question until the break. If approached during breaks, most umpires/referees will be very happy to explain the infringement and why they ruled the way they did. Also note that umpires/referees will not argue about whether or not an infringement actually occurred. As an example, if an umpire/referee calls a foul; contact or obstruction there is no argument to be had. The umpire/referee s decision is final. Please show respect to all YMCA staff; volunteers; umpires and other players. We are all here to enjoy the sport! 1. YMCA of Launceston Inc has a strict ZERO TOLERANCE policy with regard to excessively aggressive behaviour both physically and verbally. YMCA of Launceston Inc provides social sporting competitions with a focus on fun & participation not win at all costs. Court rage will simply not be tolerated. Sportsmanship is number one! Inappropriate player conduct: This competition is social. Any rough play, abusive language, bickering or challenge to the umpires authority etc. will not be tolerated. Rough play includes any act or omission that, in the umpire s opinion, places the safety of players at risk. In most instances the following procedures will apply for the above infringements. PLEASE NOTE: the umpire has every right to send off any player at any stage for any reason for any period of time if they feel it necessary to do so for player safety or their ability to effectively control the game. There will be no substitute player allowed on the court in this instance. Should the player sent off be a Centre (in Netball), another player on the court will have to change position: First offence Warning for an infringement of rough play, abusive language, bickering or dissent. Second offence 5 minutes in the sin bin (bench) for a second infringement or a single incident that the umpire feels is sufficiently dangerous to warrant its award. No substitute player is allowed to replace a player who is sent off. Third Offence The player is sent off for the entire game and must entirely remove oneself from the Stadium until the conclusion of the game. Should the player choose not to leave, their team will lose the game This is awarded for a third infringement or a single incident that the umpire feels is sufficiently dangerous to warrant its award. Again, no substitute player is allowed to replace a player who is sent off. YMCA Management will then request the player to remove themselves from the court and proceed to deal with the matter.

2 2. SAFETY: All participants must demonstrate a common duty of care toward all participants while on the court. Dangerous and reckless play will not be tolerated 3. ALCOHOL / DRUGS : If Officials (i.e. Management, Umpires, Referees or bench personnel) smell it YOU DO NOT PLAY. Second offence is disqualification from the competition(s). If a player s balance or judgment seems affected by the possibility of alcohol consumption OR Drug substances; Management has the right to tell the player to cease playing. 4. JEWELLERY / FINGER NAILS: All items that can potentially cause injury must be removed before play. This includes watches, all rings including finger/ear/nose/lip/eyebrow rings and other jewellery. If items can not be removed, they must be taped and cover over to the umpire s / referee s satisfaction. Finger nails protruding past the finger tip must be cut or covered with gloves. NO TAPING is allowed. 5. UNIFORMS: All teams must provide their own Basketball tops and Netball bibs. Basketball: Tops of the same colour must be worn. Netball: Same colour bibs must be worn. Acceptable uniform means identical playing shirts of the same colour. Appropriate footwear i.e. sandshoes / sports shoes must be worn. 6. SCORERS: Each team MUST provide a scorer for each game (i.e. two scorers per game). It is the responsibility of the Team Captain to ensure their team provides a scorer for their game. If a team fails to provide a scorer, they have no right to question the scoring. 7. GAME TIMES: 6.00pm first game time; 9.00pm last game time. Games will consist of 2 x 20 minute halves for Basketball and Netball. Starting times: Games will start on the scheduled game time. The clock will run exactly on the scheduled game time without question. Team Captains need to ensure their team has paid their game fee by at least half-time. Please ensure your team arrives at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled game time to allow time for umpire checks, payments etc. Being courteous will ensure the night runs smoothly for everyone. 8. CLOCK STOPPAGES: The clock will not stop, except when finals are played. See final rules which are provided closer to time of finals. 9. TIME OUTS: Basketball: 1 x 30 second time out per team per half. Netball: 1 x 30 second time out per team per half for substituting players only. 10. SUBSTITUTIONS: Basketball: On any dead ball. Netball: Prior to your team s centre pass. Once per half and half-time.

3 11. COMMENCEMENT OF GAMES: Teams unavailable to start at the rostered time will be penalized two points per minute for Basketball and 1 point per minute for Netball. A Forfeit will be declared after 10 minutes has passed. No new player can join the final 10 minutes of the game. Men s / Ladies Basketball: 4 players are required to commence the game. Mixed Basketball: 4 players are required to commence the game of equal sex i.e. 2 males; 2 females. There is to be no more than two (2) male players on the court any one time. Ladies Netball: 5 players are required to commence the game. Mixed Netball: 5 players are required to commence the game. There is to be no more than three (3) males on the court any one time. Mixed teams are only permitted to play one male in each third. 12. FORFEITS Should a team be unable to provide the minimum number of players to commence the game no later than two minutes after the scheduled game time, that team will have to forfeit. The forfeiting team s score will be 0 and the other team will automatically receive 20 points. Teams must notify the YMCA by 10.00am on the morning of the day you are scheduled to play if forfeiting, otherwise a forfeit fee of $55.00 MUST be paid the following week. Please take note: The YMCA would rather see teams make a considerable effort to turn up to play with lesser players, if you have 1 or 2 sick or injury etc. People from the previous games are usually willing to help which is appreciated to enable the game to go ahead for the other side that has turned up to play. If a sincere attempt is made by a team to provide a game, then the forfeit fee will not be charged. Loss of three competition points. A forfeit without adequate notice is grounds for us to replace your team with a team on the waiting list (no refunds). Teams that are penalized without a game, (this does not include a scratch team ) being played will receive a credit for their next game. Teams which continuously forfeit will be withdrawn from the roster. 13. PLAYERS NUMBERS: Men s & Ladies Basketball: 5 players with 3 players needed to start. Mixed Basketball: 5 players (3 female / 2 males). Men are allowed anywhere on the court. Men can not make contact with the ball while a female player is in the process of shooting. Penalty: The shot counts, if fouled the basket count plus one free throw is awarded. Men can t screen females outside the 3 point area. Two females on the court at all times. Exception: 3 players (any combination) needed to start. Ladies Netball: 7 players with 5 players needed to start. Mixed Netball: 7 players. Maximum of 3 male players on the court with only 1 allowed in the shooting / defensive circles. 5 players needed to start. 14. THE ROSTER: It is the responsibility of the Team Captain and individual team members to read and double check the draw. All rosters are posted on our website ( and notice boards which are correct at all times.

4 15. GRADING: Teams are graded throughout the year. A complete round robin is not the norm due to the amount of teams, but when the time is decided by the coordinator; the roster is graded into two pools and a round robin is played. From there we spilt into either two or three pools depending on the amount of teams in readiness for finals towards the end of year. Rosters usually commence second week in February and conclude with Grand Finals in the second week of December. Teams may be re-graded (moved to another division) at the discretion of YMCA Staff. 16. REFEREE S: The referee / umpire has the right to warn, ask to leave or eject from the stadium, any spectator whom they feel is not behaving in the spirit of the game. Only team captains can approach the referee regarding rulings and interpretations. THE REFEREES DECISION IS FINAL. 17. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY: YMCA reserves the right to refuse or prioritise entry based on the following criteria Forfeit History; History of foul play (aggressive behaviour & dissent to officials); incomplete uniform; balance and standard of competition; adherence to YMCA s Code of Conduct or financial debts outstanding. 18. INSURANCE: The YMCA Membership Fee assists in the cost of Public Liability Insurance. Game Fees covers administration and court costs only. It does not include personal accident / injury insurance cover. Individuals are encouraged to consider private health insurance options. Please respect and abide by these rules so that all players have a fun and enjoyable experience. The Chief Executive Officer may, at any time, withdraw or suspend players (or teams) from the competition if they feel the offender(s) is/are not abiding by the Centre Rules or causing disturbance to other players/teams. If an incident occurs please report it immediately to YMCA Staff so that the situation can be rectified as soon as possible. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy yourself! Its Social Sport not Australian Championships! Remember to smile and have fun!
