1 SolarEdge Communications Options Application Note For CPU version and above This Application Note provides an overview of the communication options that are currently supported by SolarEdge.SolarEdge devices are categorized as follows: Inverter, Safety and Monitoring Interface (SMI) or Monitoring Combiner Box (MCB). For a detailed description of how to install and set up communications between the SolarEdge devices and the SolarEdge Monitoring Server, you may refer to the specific SolarEdge device installation manual, the ZigBee installation manuals and the GSM installation manual. The information supplied here is for reference only and does not replace the above mentioned user manuals. This application note provides the configuration sequence required for each scenario according to CPU software version and above. For CPU version below refer to This document contains the following sections: Contents Communication Types and Functionality 2 Connectors Location 3 Single/Multiple Devices, Wired Ethernet (LAN) Connection 4 Multiple Devices, RS485 Bus, Wired Ethernet Connection 5 ZigBee Wireless Connection 7 Single Device, ZigBee Server Connection 7 Multiple Devices, RS485 Bus, ZigBee Server Connection 8 Multiple Devices, ZigBee Bus, Ethernet Server Connection 10 GSM Modem Connection 12 Single Device, GSM Modem Connection 12 Multiple Devices, RS485 Bus, GSM Modem Connection 13 Non-SolarEdge Monitoring Connection 15 Multiple Inverters, RS485 Bus, Non-SolarEdge Logger (SunSpec Protocol) 15 Multiple Inverters, RS485 Bus, Wired Ethernet, Parallel Monitoring 16 Multiple Inverters, RS485 Bus, Parallel Monitoring using SolarEdge control and communication gateway 17 1

2 Communication Types and Functionality The following describes the various types of communication options supported by SolarEdge devices (Inverters, Safety and Monitoring Interface and Control and Communication Gateway) and their functionality. RS232 (UART) - GSM: Enables you to connect supported external GSM modems (only for EU and APAC) with the RS232 port. This port can also be used to connect to a local computer in order to perform initial setup configuration and maintenance of the SolarEdge device using the SolarEdge Configuration Tool. Ethernet: Enables communication to the SolarEdge server for remote monitoring. RS485-X: Some SolarEdge devices have two RS485 ports (e.g. SMI). The RS485-X refers to either RS485-1 or RS The RS485-X port supports the following functionalities: Connecting multiple SolarEdge devices through the same bus in a master/slave configuration. Connecting to a third-party logger using the SunSpec protocol. Connecting to a revenue meter ZigBee (Optional): Supports the following functionalities: Wirelessly interconnecting several devices in a master/slave configuration (point to multipoint (P2MP) configuration). In this configuration, only the master device is physically connected to the internet. ZigBee operates as a mesh network, so that each ZigBee modem operates as a repeater for its neighboring ZigBee modem. Therefore, the position of each ZigBee router/slave need not be within range of the coordinator/master, but must be within range of its neighboring ZigBee router. Wirelessly connecting a single device (point to point (P2P) configuration) to an external ZigBee gateway without physically wiring it to the internet. 2

3 Connectors Location Inverters RS232 Connector: The RS232 connector is located on the bottom of the inverter, as shown below: RS232 Connector Figure 1: RS232 Connector Safety and Monitoring Interface (SMI) and Inverter internal communication board connectors: The Ethernet and RS485 ports are wired to a connector inside the inverter/smi. The following demonstrates the location of the block terminal communication connectors: RS232 RS485-2 (for SMI only) RS485-1 (for all SolarEdge devices) Figure 2: Terminal Block Connectors Ethernet (8) NOTE: All the illustrations in the following senarios show the inverter as an example. The setting is true for all SolarEdge devices unless otherwise explicitly stated. 3
