Record results. Three week revision Poetry Mock Examination (one week) Month of May Revision and prepare for terminal examination. In all about 16 weeks needs to be devoted to the literature poetry seen and unseen. The candidates sit the examination in June year 9. We do not want to have to re-sit the examination so it is essential that thorough knowledge is acquired by all teachers so effective teaching will be delivered to the cohort. Teach to the highest level descriptors. Most diligent preparation is required for this examination in June. Three items to read On the H tier candidates must answer four compulsory questions which will ask about audience/purpose/use of facts and opinions/use of rhetorical devices and presentational crafts. English Language Unit 1 Externally marked examination June Year 11 Understanding and Producing Non-Fiction texts SECTION B 20% 1 hour Two compulsory writing tasks in the non-fiction genre. Candidates could be asked to write a letter, a report, a newspaper article, a speech, an advice sheet etc. One short writing task is worth 16 marks One longer writing task is worth 24 marks NO CHOICE essentially same format as the legacy specification letters, reports, speeches, writing to advise, persuade. Q2 How does Steinbeck use the character Crooks to covey ideas as a whole to convey ideas about America in the 1930s FINAL REVISION OF Literature Modern Text. Ensure pupils have detailed character and theme notes on all aspects of the novels. Regular essay practice of the sample questions. Provision of high quality modelled responses to enable pupils to achieve success in this examination.

7 ENGLISH NEW SPECIFICATION 2010 ELEANOR WELCH JANUARY 2010 Our current Year 9 should be following the new specifications for GCSE English, English Literature, English Language. We are trialling the Controlled Assessments for AQA this term and will begin the real assessment when the task bank is released in April. Out trialling can actually be used for the real controlled assessment so nothing is wasted. All controlled assessments must be handwritten. ENGLISH GCSE 2010 Examination external assessment 40% Controlled Assessment internally assessed/externally moderated 60%. External Examination Unit 1 Understanding, producing, non-fiction texts 40% Section A Section B Reading non-fiction (just as in the old specification 20% mark 1 hour) Writing non-fiction (write to argue, advise, persuade) 20% marks 1 hour Two writing tasks. Individual/group presentation Group discussion and listening Role play (drama based) Unit 2 speaking and listening 20% Controlled Assessment

8 Unit 3 Controlled Assessments 40% 5 written responses Part A Reading Candidates will submit three written assessments based on the same task chosen from the task bank for this unit. Refer to the specimen Controlled Assessment Tasks. Word limited for each assessment is 1600 words. Time allowed for each controlled assessment is 4 hours. Must write about Shakespeare, a text from a different culture and a text from the English literary Heritage. Assessment 1 Shakespeare any play may be used. Refer Assessment tasks Assessment 2 - Different cultures responding to a novel or poetry from the prescribed lists. Assessment 3 A text from the English literary Heritage. Candidates MUST ENSURE COVERAGE OF PROSE, POETRY AND DRAMA Part B Writing Creative writing choice of two from three themes. Moving image/prompt and Re-creation/ Personal experience. Assessment 4 Choose a poem from the AQA Anthology and write a narrative piece from a different viewpoint. Assessment 5 Autobiography/personal experiences/personal writing

9 GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEW SPECIFICATION 2010 June If candidates take English Language they must also study and enter for English Literature. Post 16 candidates may enter for GCSE English Language or Literature as A stand-alone qualification. English Language Candidates must study and be examined on three units. Unit 1 Understanding, producing, non-fiction texts External marked 40% Time 2 hours This examination is IDENTICAL to the examination in ENGLISH Section A Reading and understanding of non-fiction texts, identifying the writer s, crafts, audiences and purposes 20% Section B Two compulsory writing tasks one shorter and one longer task argue, persuade, advise, explain, describe, inform 20% Unit 2 Speaking and listening Controlled assessment 20% The assessment is IDENTICAL to the assessment of English. English candidates will be assessed on three Speaking and Listening tasks. Presenting 0 individual talk, interview, re-present, main points Discussion and listening pair or group discussion Role play performance in role Record keeping in school submission of records as legally specification, advisory visit by EN1 Advisor.

10 Unit 3 Understanding spoken and written language and writing creatively Part 1 Task 1 Controlled Assessments of Four Tasks 40% Extended reading The task will be set on any of the texts being used for English Literature but must submit a separate task which meets the requirements of the English Language specification For example Of Mice and Men / Lord of the Flies / The Crucible / An Inspector Calls etc. etc. can be used. Tasks will be set by AQA addressing AO3 The task MUST NOT BE THE SAME AS SUBMITTED FOR ENGLISH LITERATURE UNIT 3 AO3 Read and understand texts Develop and sustain interpretations of writers ideas Explain and evaluate writers use of linguistic, grammatical, structural and presentational features. Tasks will be set on Theme Character Genre Part 2 Tasks 2/3 Producing creative texts (creative writing) Two pieces of writing must be submitted Tasks will be set by AQA. Two of the topics must be covered in this unit Re-creations (taking a text and turning it into another) Moving images (writing based on moving images) Commissions (responding to a given brief) Tasks will expect candidates to write non-fiction genres but there will always be one re-creative task that allows candidates to produce a narrative. Therefore 2 essays totalling 1200 words 15% Part 3 Task 4 Studying spoken language words 3 hours 10% Candidates will submit one written response to spoken language study. The focus is investigative. The tasks should focus on critical reflection on their own and other s use of language, variations in spoken language The evolution of language and relation to identify and cultural diversity. At St Monica s I propose, we study Route A. Route B may be more suitable for Post 16 study. Route A Candidates must study and be examined on three units. 40% Unit 1 Externally marked modern text and texts from different cultures + 35% Unit 2 Externally marked Poetry, Anthology and unseen + poetry 25% Unit 3 Controlled Assessment. Shakespeare and the English Literary Heritage There will be two externally marked examination papers in English Literature plus one controlled assessment. 12 Unit 2 Poetry across time 35% External examination 1 hour 15 minutes SECTION A Poetry from the Anthology. Candidates must study 15 poems. Candidates answer one question from a choice of two. The question will ask candidates to compare a named poem with another poem, chosen by the candidate, from the cluster. There are four different clusters. The teacher will choose which cluster his/her students will study. Candidates must respond to ideas, themes and issues, form structure and language. Time allowed 45 minutes 23%. SECTION B Unseen poetry Candidates are given one compulsory question on an unseen poem. Candidates expected to respond to ideas, themes and issues, form, structure and language. Time allowed 30 minutes 12% Unit 3 The significance of Shakespeare and The English Literary Heritage Controlled Assessment 3-4 hours 25% Candidates will submit one task from the topics in the unit. Tasks will ask candidates to link (NOT COMPARE) one play by Shakespeare with any other text from the English Literary Heritage but NOT a text studied in any other unit of this course (i.e. English Literature). THERE ARE NO PRESCRIBED SHAKESPEARE TEXTS THE LITERARY HERITAGE IS STILL THE ENTIRE LIST OF AUTHORS FROM THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM KS4 PROGRAMME OF STUDY Task setting Tasks will be set by AQA on aspects such as Theme love, conflict, family, power Characterisation relationships, heroes, male and female or comic characters. Genre endings, settings, conventions, importance of parts to the whole. Linkage Links must be made but not detailed comparison. Candidates should show awareness of linkage. Candidates can write about the texts separately but will be expected to draw links in the introduction and conclusion. Some candidates may make explicit links throughout. Length about 2000 words in a period of four hours.

14 CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT: YEAR 9 SPRING 2010 The proposal is to trial for AQA (and use for the real Literature controlled assessment) one task in the Spring Term 2010 with Year 9 pupils. English Literature Task 1 Shakespeare and the English Literature Heritage This is a Linked task. Linked means connections between the selected texts but not detailed comparisons. Word limit 2000 words in controlled conditions up to 4 hours. Please see other information in English Literature booklet. Examples of suitable texts 1. Many female characters in pre-twentieth century texts seemed to have no other ambition than to get married. Does this seem a fair comment? Discuss your response to a female character in a Shakespeare play and a female character in a pre-20 th century prose text e.g. Bronte, Austen. 2. Explore the consequences of ambition in Macbeth and Great Expectations. 3. Many female characters in pre-20 th century text seem to have little autonomy in a male dominated world. Does this seem a fair comment? Discuss your response to a female character in a Shakespeare play and a female character in a pre-20 th century prose text. 4. Write about the ways difficulties of love are explored in Much Ado About Nothing (or any other suitable Shakespeare play) and a pre-20 th century prose text. 5. Explain the presentation of heroism in a Shakespeare play and a pre-20 th century prose text. NOTE WELL IT IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL THAT YOU SHARE THE ASSESSMENT CRITERIA WITH PUPILS BEFORE YOU START TO RIGOROUSLY PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE TASK Assessment Objectives AO1 A02 A03 A04 Respond to texts critically, imaginatively, select and evaluate textual detail to support interpretation.
