4 Overview The HandPunch Utility is designed to provide an easy and reliable way to test communications to the HandPunch reader. It can be run from a 3-½ inch floppy drive, or it can be copied to a computer for ongoing testing. It has 2 modes of operation. The initial form that displays allows you to enter the information to perform a simple communications test. This test can be used to help determine the following: The HandPunch is cabled correctly The HandPunch is configured with the correct reader address The serial port is working properly The modem/data converter is working properly The HandPunch reader is configured to the correct baud rate The bell relay is connected properly Using the Advanced Diagnostics, which is password protected, you can perform more in depth testing. This functionality will not be discussed in this document, and should only be used with the assistance of etime Before You Begin It will make your testing and troubleshooting significantly easier if you make sure the HandPunch readers are installed in accordance with the appropriate ADP HandPunch Quick Installation Guide and configured in accordance with the appropriate ADP HandPunch Quick Reference Card. The wiring diagrams for the Basic HandPunch relay module are in the HandPunch for etime User s Reference Guide. All the procedures outlined assume this has been done. 5 Running the HandPunch Utility 1. Place diskette in your floppy drive. 2. Click the Start button and select Run. 3. In the Run dialog box, Type A:\hputil and click OK. If you are using a drive other than A, substitute that letter here. The following screen will display: Testing a Direct Connect HandPunch 1. Make sure the HandPunch reader is plugged in and the data cable is connected to J3. 2. Make sure the data converter is connected to the PC, is plugged into a working power outlet, and has the data cable connected to it. 3. Run the HandPunch Utility as described in the Running the HandPunch Utility section. 4. Enter the appropriate Serial Port (COM 1 or COM 2 is preferred). 5. Make sure Direct is selected for connection Type, and that 9600 is selected for the Baud Rate. 6. Phone Number and Modem Init String fields should remain blank. 7. Enter the correct value in the Reader Address field (Factory default is 1). 8. Click on the Test Reader button. If communications are successful, the following message will display: If you wish to test another reader select Yes, change the appropriate settings on the screen and press the Test Reader button. 6 If communications failed, one of the following messages will display: See Appendix A for explicit troubleshooting information. Testing a Modem HandPunch 1. Make sure the HandPunch reader is plugged in and the data cable is connected to J2. 2. Make sure the modem is connected to the PC, is working correctly, and is connected to a functioning phone line. 3. Run the HandPunch Utility as described in the Running the HandPunch Utility section. 4. Enter the appropriate Serial Port (COM 1 or COM 2 is preferred). 5. Make sure Modem is selected for connection Type, and that 2400 is selected for the Baud Rate. 6. Enter the Phone Number for the First HandPunch reader you want to Test. 7. Click on the ellipsis next to the Modem Init String fields, scroll the list to find the manufacturer and model of the modem being used, and double click on it. 8. Enter the correct value in the Reader Address field (Factory default is 1). 9. Click on the Test Reader button. 7 If you wish to test another reader select Yes, change the appropriate settings on the screen and press the Test Reader button. If communications failed, one of the following messages will display: See Appendix A for explicit troubleshooting information. Testing an Ethernet HandPunch 1. Make sure the HandPunch reader is plugged in and the data cable is connected to the RJ-45 10BaseT connector. 2. Run the HandPunch Utility as described in the Running the HandPunch Utility section. 3. Make sure Ethernet is selected for connection Type, and that 9600 is selected for the Baud Rate. 4. Enter the correct value in the Reader Address field (Factory default is 1). 5. Click on the Test Reader button. If communications are successful, the following message will display: If you wish to test another reader select Yes, change the appropriate settings on the screen and press the Test Reader button. 8 If communications failed, one of the following messages will display: See Appendix A for explicit troubleshooting information. Testing a Bell Relay for Proper Connection 1. Enter the parameters pertaining to the HandPunch with the bell relay and click the button marked Test Reader. A Successful Connection message should appear. 2. Click the Yes button to continue testing. The Test Bell Relay button will become active. 3. Click on the Test Bell Relay button. 4. The following message box should appear and you should hear the relay click every 1/2 second. (If a bell is attached to the relay, you should hear the bell ring 1/2 second on then 1/2 second off) 5. 9 Appendix A Possible Causes of HandPunch Utility Error Messages Cause HandPunch Utility and HandPunch reader are set to different addresses HandPunch Utility and HandPunch reader are set to different baud rates Incorrect Port Assigned Invalid Modem Init String Data Converter or Modem not connected or not powered on. Incorrectly wired RJ-11 cable RS422 communications cable not connected, shorted or open Solution Make sure the value set in the Reader Address field matches the value set in the HandPunch (Administrator menu 2). See Quick Reference Card for details. Make sure the value set in the Baud Rate field matches the value set in the HandPunch (Administrator menu 2, Channel 0 Baud). See Quick Reference Card for details. Make sure selection in Serial Ports corresponds to the port that has the data converter or modem attached. Make sure value in the Modem Init String field is valid for the modem attached to the PC. Check that the data converter/modem is attached to the correct com port and is also connected to an operational 110V outlet. Check each RJ-11 cable to make sure they are wired straight through Check all RS422 connections (at the data converter and each HandPunch reader ) Try connecting reader directly to data converter using a correctly wired RJ-11 cable. 10 Problem Line is busy No Answer Solution Make sure that the number in Phone Number field is correct, check for another device on the same line, and/or check for a misconfigured or malfunctioning line sharing device Make sure that the number in Phone Number field is correct Make sure RJ-11 cable is good (Test by replacing it) - Check for a misconfigured or malfunctioning line sharing device If communications is via a PBX system, and all previous steps have been performed, ask client to have their telecom support person test to make sure the ring voltage is 48 Volts or greater and conforms to POTS specifications. Problem Attempting to Use Com port that is busy or non-existent Solution Check that pcanywhere, WinFax or any other application is not locking the port. Make sure the com port you are attempting to use is correctly configured in device manager as well as the computers CMOS setup. If problem is with com 3 or 4, try com 1 or 2. 11 Problem IP Address entered in HandPunch Utility does not match IP address entered in HandPunch Incorrect Gateway entered in HandPunch Solution Make sure you have entered the correct IP address in both the software and the reader. Make sure the HandPunch is configured with the correct Gateway information. HandPunch is connected to a 100Mbps port HandPunch only works at 10Mbps. Move it to a 10/100Mbps autosensing, or a 10Mbps port. Wrong port # is entered in the HandPunch Utility Defective equipment Make sure Port# in the HandPunch Utility is set to (Unless the client is using a non-standard configuration they will have to supply the correct value). Run TRACERT to determine if there is a device that is not functioning correctly. Troubleshooting the Bell Relay Test is engaged but relay doesn t click 1. Make sure you have engaged the test on the HandPunch reader with the relay installed. 2. Make sure the relay and phoenix connector are wired correctly. (See diagrams in HandPunch for etime User s Reference Guide) 3. Make sure cable is good. 4. If Basic HandPunch, place voltmeter probes across terminals 10 and 12 of the phoenix connector If Full HandPunch, place voltmeter probes across pin 21 on TS3 and pin 1 on J6 (with test running) voltage should toggle between 0 volts DC (off) and approx 12 to 14 volts DC (on). If always 0, disconnect phoenix connector and test again. If still 0, replace HandPunch If output is always 12 to 14 volts DC, replace HandPunch.
