4 Nuts and bolts Attendance It is important that all children have a high (regular) attendance at school so they can learn alongside their classmates and follow a logical development of learning topics and activities. Evidence shows that children with lower attendance achieve less well than those whose attendance is high.

6 Nuts and bolts Please ensure your child has a named school PE kit in school. We all do PE on a Monday and Tuesday Please ensure earrings are removed on PE days and long hair is tied up. It would be very helpful if your child s book bag/link book is checked daily so you are kept up to date with all relevant information.

Use of Junior Library Joined handwriting writing in pen!

12 What happens in a Year 2 Classroom? Superhero Day! On Wednesday 12 th October, there will be a fun day of Superhero activities with other Year 2 children from local schools. There are plenty of dressing up options in the shops right now for Halloween!

13 The National Curriculum Maths Key expectations for each year are provided in the Class Handouts. In our school we aim to make learning practical Make learning fun no fear Relate learning to real life situations Develop mastery of the fundamentals by exploring and challenging (rather than racing onto the next year s work) Support children at their level through explicit differentiation Further guidance on offer in the maths evening Inspire greater confidence in number with : Mathletics

14 The National Curriculum English Key expectations for each year are provided in the Class Handouts. Make writing fun different tools no fear of getting wrong Provide a reason to write Teach the correct way to form letters Join handwriting Support children at their level through explicit differentiation Support in spelling

15 Phonics Letters and sounds The children are assessed and grouped according to their phonic awareness. This means that they learn, reading and apply letter sounds at their own level, every day. The children will be taught in small groups which will include children from across the Infants. On-going assessment will mean that groups can be adjusted to ensure the best progress for every child.

17 Spelling Other than phonics The children will be taught the high frequency tricky words that cannot be sounded out within lessons Lists of such words in the rear of the Link-book. The National Curriculum also expects that children in year 1 and 2 are able to spell specific lists of words. These are the Common Exception Words and we will endeavour to support your child in the learning and application of these in a fun and positive way.

20 Assessment Measuring learning A variety of methods: observation, self, peer, outcome as well as more formal test papers (delivered in a non-threatening fashion). We assess progress in every subject but nationally we are expected to record achievement in: Reading, Maths, Spelling and Grammar Why? To find out where each child is, where they need to go next and how to get them there. Year 2: May 2017: SATS High expectations but no pressure

21 Homework Weekly homework is not set however we love self initiated home learning and encourage this with a range of home projects and (in Year 2) by finding out about the world for our Chuckanucka. Year 1 have a class bunny to take home and a Friday Maths challenge. Plus everyone has access to Mathletics and should read as much as possible!

22 Behaviour Each class has produced its own list of Class rules based on the school rules

23 Behaviour: Celebrating learning There are many ways in which we recognise super learning: Achievement tree Weekly Learning star Achievement Points: Nightingale, Wellington, Drake and Nelson Praise!

24 Behaviour: Make the right choice Many children will experience difficulties with behaviour at one time or another. This may be due to friendship issues, emotional or developmental issues or even factors from outside of school. If poor choices are made, there are a number of ways in which this is followed up: Class sanctions (e.g. missing some of their playtime) Spending time working in another class Seeing a Phase Leader (Mr Johnson, Mrs Cox or Miss Hawkins) Seeing Mrs Hewitt-Lee or Mrs Hard The range of sanctions, and the way they are implemented, will vary according to the age of the child. Parents will be involved if there are concerns about behaviour.

25 Trips, visits & shared experiences There are many events which have been designed to bring joy and inspire excitement about learning ahead for the children. Some are for classes (Pirate day, Superhero day) but many are for the whole Infant school: Harvest Festival (Years 1 and 2) Nativity Father Christmas visit Christmas Party 100 day There is also a coach trip in the Summer 2017 term Costs for the trips can be paid for by using the school s WisePay system. Note that other opportunities may arise but that we will keep you fully informed if we are offered further quality learning experiences.
