Students should study the whole text. Choose one of: Macbeth Romeo and Juliet The Tempest The Merchant of Venice Much Ado About Nothing Julius Caesar. The 19th century novel Students will study one novel from the list of seven set texts. Students should study the whole text. Choose one of: Robert Louis Stevenson The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens Great Expectations Charlotte Brontë Jane Eyre Mary Shelley Frankenstein Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice Modern texts Students will study one from a choice of 12 set texts, which include post 1914 prose fiction and drama. Students should study the whole text. There is a choice of two clusters, each containing 15 poems. The poems in each cluster are thematically linked and were written between 1789 and the present day. The titles of the two clusters are: Love and relationships Power and conflict. Students should study all 15 poems in their chosen cluster and be prepared to write about any of them in the examination. Unseen poetry In preparing for the unseen poetry section of the examination students should experience a wide range of poetry in order to develop their ability to closely analyse unseen poems.

Further information: The subject content for Year 10 and Year 11 English Literature forms a two year course. The literature GCSE will be taught simultaneously to the English Language GCSE according to the English Department s Scheme of Works. The main subject content detailed above will be delivered over the two year course in order to best prepare students for the final external examination. Individual subject staff will offer and tailor a diverse range and variety of teaching materials to best suit the needs of all pupils in their care and to best meet the requirements of the exam.

9 Year 10 Subject Information Subject: English Language Exam board: WJEC Key assessment dates: External Final Exam at the end of Year 11: 80% % coursework/projects: 20% Main subject content This GCSE in English language promotes an integrated approach to oracy, reading and writing so that writing and oracy work are stimulated by reading experiences. All texts in the examination will be unseen, that is, learners will not have studied the examination texts during the course. GCSE English language will focus primarily on the functional aspects of language. The term functional here should be considered in the broad sense of providing learners with the skills and abilities they need to take active and responsible roles in their communities, everyday life, the workplace and in educational settings. Oracy skills Present information and select/organise information and ideas effectively and persuasively, e.g. for a prepared spoken presentation or group discussion. Demonstrate an understanding of the conventions of spoken language in both formal and informal situations. Speak accurately and fluently, adapting style and language to a wide range of forms, contexts, audiences and purposes. Experiment with language and techniques to express opinions, create effects and engage audiences.
