1 Month 1 - September Unit 1 AQA Paper 2 Review Curriculum Details At the end of Year 10, students sat an internal assessment of AQA GCSE English Language Paper 2. This exam focuses on analysing and creating non-fiction texts. Students are required to read two non-fiction texts: one modern and one from the nineteenth century. Students then have to complete a series of questions testing a range of skills: information retrieval; synthesising information from two texts; analysing language techniques and comparing writers viewpoints and methods. Students are then expected to produce a formal text where they convey their opinions on a contentious issue. September will be spent reflecting on each student s performance in these assessments and exploring ways to develop skills and exam technique. Many students were less confident with the reading section and so this will be our primary focus in this unit. Reading skills to be covered (primary focus): Writing skills to be covered (secondary focus): Personalised Learning AO1:Comprehension True/ False Statements (4 marks) AO2: Synthesis ideas and make a summary (8 marks) AO3: Language analysis (12 marks) AO4: Comparing writers ideas and perspectives (16 marks) AO5: Writing content and organisation (24 marks) AO6: Writing technical accuracy (16 marks) Tasks can be found on Show My and will vary according to the needs of each group. 2 Curriculum Details October to November Unit 2 Reading Fiction Texts (Review) Students will revisit the skills required for Paper 1, Section A of GCSE English Language. Students will study a range of previously unseen literature extracts from the BGS Anthology: these will cover a range of genres, styles and narrative approaches. Students will then use these texts as a basis to practise the skills required for Qs 1-4 of this exam. Personalised Learning Types of question: - Q1: Information retrieval (paraphrasing from the text) - Q2: Analysing language features (with a focus on using linguistic terminology and making perceptive inferences) - Q3: Analysing how a text is structured - Q4: Evaluating a text (examining how successful the writer has been this is a challenging task which requires a good grasp of literary methods and the ability to plan a structured essay response) Skills to be covered: - How to select and use suitable quotes and references - How to develop analysis in an insightful way - How to identify and comment on each writer s methods, using suitable terminology - How to decode the question - How to approach and structure an essay response - How to evaluate a text - Extract analysis - Peer assessment - Glossary exercises - Revision - Practice papers

3 Curriculum Details November to February Unit 3 Reading & Producing Non-Fiction Texts Topic: People & Places Students will revisit the skills required for Paper 2 of GCSE English Language. Students will study a range of previously unseen texts from the BGS Anthology: these will cover a range of genres, styles and perspectives. Students will focus particularly on nineteenth century texts to help familiarise them with the language. Students will then use these texts as a basis to practise the skills required for Qs 1-4 of this exam. Students will also review their formal writing skills as the following tasks may appear in the examination: letters, broadsheet articles, leaflets, speeches, essays. Learning will focus on technical accuracy and planning, as well as using more ambitious vocabulary and devices. Personalised Learning Types of question: - Q1: Identifying True statements - Q2: Synthesising information between two texts to identify and comment on any differences - Q3: Analysing how a writer uses linguistic methods - Q4: Comparing both the writers viewpoints and the methods they use to convey their message - Q5: Producing a formal, non-fiction text that is tailored to its audience, purpose and genre. Focus will be on tone, technical accuracy and impressive language, as well as how the student s ideas are effectively structured and linked. Skills to be covered: - How to select and use suitable quotes and references - How to develop analysis in an insightful way - How to write a successful comparison - How to identify and comment on each writer s methods, using suitable terminology - How to decode the question - How to approach and structure an essay response - Spelling, punctuation and grammar skills - Choosing apt vocabulary - Using appropriate linguistic devices - Planning and structuring a non-fiction text - Extract analysis - Peer assessment - Glossary exercises - Revision - Practice papers

4 February to March Unit 4 Creative Writing (Review) Curriculum Details Students will review and further develop their creative writing skills in preparation for Paper 1 of GCSE English Language. Students will have studied this paper previously; this will be a chance to review and consolidate their skills. Students will review how to plan and structure original, imaginative and engaging descriptions of people, events and places. Students will also review strategies for structuring narratives, such as choosing a suitable narrator and considering whether to use a flashback. A key focus will be on written technical accuracy and successful planning both are crucial for success in the examination. Students may be asked to produce a description or a narrative in the exam. They will have a choice of task one will be use an image as a prompt. 5 March to May/ June Unit 5 Final Examination Revision Curriculum Details Staff will assess the needs of the group and plan lessons accordingly to meet their learning needs.
