2 St. Michael s C.E. Primary School Music Policy Document At St Michael s we have a due regard for our duties under the Equality act Through the delivery of the Music curriculum, we will ensure that we; eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations; Rationale Music is a means of communication not bound by written language and enables pupils of all abilities to develop a capacity for self-expression. Music can help develop positive attitudes in pupils, not only to themselves but also to others. Its crosscurricular nature means that it is a useful and effective tool for enjoyable learning in many subject areas. We aim to develop a love and appreciation of all types of music. Singing from an early age is essential to building self-confidence and each child sings on a daily basis. Music is taught in a specialist music room equipped with keyboards and a host of percussion instruments. It is a vibrant, colourful and welcoming room where music is played upon entry to provide a stimulating environment for all pupils. Music is taught in small groups of no more than 15 pupils. This is to ensure that each child is heard. Aims and Objectives Regardless of gender, ethnic origin or ability, we specifically aim to: Stimulate children's creativity and imagination by providing aural and sensory experiences; Develop children's understanding of pitch, rhythm, pulse, texture, melody, harmony and composition; Explore with children ideas and meanings in the work of composers and help them learn about their different styles and periods of composition. All children in Key Stage 2 have an opportunity to compose and perform their own jingle; Help children to learn to make thoughtful judgements and encourage self and peer assessment. Content Children will have opportunities in Music to:

3 develop respect for their own and others' work and learn how to offer and receive constructive feedback and praise; work with others, listening to and respecting each other's ideas and learning to value different strengths and interests within the group; develop a respect for the instruments and resources that they use in their work and learn to evaluate critically their own and others' use of these; During Early Years, music is about developing children's creativity and imagination through providing listening and awareness activities and performance related activities. Children in EYFS will: recognize pitch and the terms: high, low; recognize pulse and the terms; fast, slow; learn the concept of call and response; learn about percussion instruments; have the opportunity to play a variety of percussion instruments; have the opportunity to sing frequently and perform in groups be able to perform in school religious celebrations o EYFS Christmas Production o EYFS Summer Graduation; learn about composers through traditional nursery rhymes; During Key Stage 1, music is about developing children's creativity and imagination through providing listening and awareness activities and performance related activities. Children in KS1 will: recognize pitch and the terms: high, low, higher, lower; recognize pulse and the terms; fast, slow, faster, slower; become more familiar with the concept of call and response; be able to identify tuned percussion as opposed to untuned percussion; have the opportunity to play a variety of percussion instruments; have the opportunity to sing frequently and perform in groups be able to perform in school religious celebrations o Year 1 Christmas Concert o Year 2 Christmas Production; learn about composers from each genre while listening to popular classical melodies;

4 have the opportunity to learn the recorder in Year 2 in small groups, no more than 15 pupils in Year 2 learn the basics of notation. During Key Stage 2, music is about developing children's creativity and imagination by consolidating their knowledge, skills and understanding from Key Stage 1. Children in KS2 will: have the opportunity to learn a classical musical instrument please see Instrumental Tuition Music Policy; by Year 6, be able to read basic musical notation and have a well developed musical appreciation; have a chance to sing in a non-selective choir and perform widely in the community; have a chance to sing in a selective high quality Chamber Choir and perform widely in the community; have the opportunity to take music examinations in their chosen instrument; have the opportunity to join a woodwind group post Grade 1 standard; for Years 3, 4 and 5, have the opportunity to play and perform, in front of parents and invited guests, at an annual year group Celebration of Music concert; have the opportunity to hear great orchestras and conductors in principal venues such as the Royal Albert Hall; compose their own jingle; in Year 6 take part in a full staged musical theatre production; be able to perform in school religious celebrations o Year 6 Harvest o Year 6 Leavers Service o Year 6 Leavers Service at Southwark Cathedral o Year 5 Christmas o Year 4 Easter o Year 3 End of Summer Term Planning The plans for Music are based on the National Curriculum/Q.C.A. schemes of work. The basic planning is taken from Music Express for Foundation stage to Year 6. Key stage 2 is enhanced by the LCP Music resources. Planning to help children develop in and appreciate music:

5 When planning, the following principles should be kept in mind: the subject's contribution to and links with the whole primary curriculum, particularly, R.E., Literacy, I.C.T, Maths, History, Geography, French and Science; the practicalities of organising the teaching of music throughout the school; the employment, management and timetabling of peripatetic teaching staff; the scheduling of room allocation the timetabling of children s music lessons to ensure school policy is adhered to i.e. Year 6 children not being taken out of Maths or Literacy for instrumental lessons the basic Q.C.A structure of each unit, including Composing and Appraising, Listening and Appraising, Performing and Appraising. the inclusion of visiting musicians and performers e.g. during Black History Month African Drumming workshops and Jazz Trios; the inclusion of opportunities for visits to concerts e.g. Royal Albert Hall. UNCRC links to be made in planning where applicable Long Term Planning Using the National Curriculum Programme of Study, the Q.C.A Music scheme of work for Key Stage 1 and 2 and the curriculum guidance for the Foundation Stage as the basis of their long term planning document, teachers refer to their year group planning which relates to the national curriculum level descriptors. Medium Term Planning Using the templates provided in the Q.C.A Scheme of work and the Foundation Stage documents teachers identify the learning objectives for each unit of work, matching possible teaching activities with learning outcomes and ensuring essential key objectives are covered at least once throughout the year. Short Term Planning This is done on a weekly basis referring to medium term plans.

6 Assessment The learning outcomes in each Q.C.A. unit show how children might demonstrate what they have learnt. Pupils should be involved in actively evaluating their work and thinking about possible improvements. The actual work children produce will serve as a record of the achievement; therefore it is not necessary to make detailed records of each child in relation to the outcomes. Attainment Targets By the end of Key Stage 1, most children will be attaining level 2 and will be able to: explore ideas; Comment on differences in others' work and suggest ways of improving their own. By the end of Key Stage 2, most children will be attaining level 5 and will be able to: explore ideas and develop their work; use their knowledge and understanding of instruments, voice and percussion to create performable composition; compare and comment on ideas, methods and approaches used in their own and others' work, relating these to the context in which the work was made; adapt and improve their work to realise their own intentions. Monitoring and Reviewing The Head of Music is responsible for monitoring the standards of children's work and the quality and breadth of teaching. The Head of Music supports colleagues in the teaching of instrumental music by informing them of current developments in the subject and by providing a strategic lead and direction for the subject in school. Termly monitoring of link books is made with each instrumental teacher to ensure consistency throughout the department. The Head of Music is also responsible for evaluating the subject and identifying areas for improvement and development. Release time will enable the Head of Music

7 to fulfil the role, reviewing medium term plans, monitoring children's work and observing teaching in the subject. Resources A resource audit and purchase is carried out annually. The Head of Music orders new stock based on specific needs for music policy. St. Michael's is fortunate to have developed and to utilise the following resources: a range of musical instruments including clarinets, flutes and brass instruments; a vast range of percussion instruments; Da Capo visual, sensory instruments for Inclusion music (see separate policy); a wide library of musical scores and appropriate voice books further informative resources based on individual Q.C.A. schemes of work may be obtained through the Wandsworth Professional Centre Teacher Resource Library; various computer resources including software programmes and ICT equipment e.g. Groovy Jungle; regular displays around the school exhibiting a wide range of performances; St. Michaels is also lucky enough to have access to a wide variety of professional performances within Greater London. Children are encouraged at all times to respect and care for their instruments and resources. Health and Safety The general teaching requirement for health and safety applies in this subject. Teachers will carry out a risk assessment before each activity, considering their tools, materials and equipment being used. Children should be taught to use instruments correctly in order to ensure safety.

8 Visiting musicians are an invaluable source of skills and information, and are invited to demonstrate and teach their skills. The school must be notified of any visitors, and the procedures outlined in the Guidelines for Helpers should be followed. The School Journeys Policy and Guidelines for Helpers must be consulted before booking or arranging any outings. The pupil: adult ratio must be adhered to at all times. Visits out of school need to be well supervised with appropriately briefed adult helpers supporting teaching staff, as well as a fully trained first aider. Home School Links Opportunities should be available for children at home to practise their instruments and be encouraged to create through composition. Equal Opportunities Please refer to the appropriate policy. Special Education Needs At St Michael s we offer a Learning through Music session each week for children identified by the Inclusion department as needing additional support.
