David F. Lindsey, Civil War Widows Pension (WC147999) State of service: Ohio Selected pages abstracted by Susan Grabek (sgrabek2001atyahoo.com) 28 April Information in brackets was added by Susan. (file updated on ) Page 7: 28 Nov Emily J. Lindsey, age 18, lives in Washington, Fayette County, Ohio. She is the widow of David F. Lindsey, private in Company A of the 54 th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, commanded by Capt. Stephen B. Yeoman and Col. Thos. Kilby Smith. David enlisted in 1861; he died at Camp Dennison 3 Feb of Rheumatism. [David Lindsey was buried in the Sugar Grove Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in Perry Township, Fayette County: Emily was married to David on 3 rd March 1857, by John King, Minister of the Gospel. Her maiden name was Emily Jane Pertee [Purtee per her death certificate]. Emily has two daughters - Anna Elizabeth Lindsey b. 8 th of Oct [death certificate states 1858], and Leona Lindsey b. 19 th of April [Anna Elizabeth Lindsey married first Isaac L. Tolle, and second George W. McDonald. Anna died in 1931, and is buried in Center Friends Burying Ground in Clinton County, Ohio. Leona Lindsey married Ulysses G. Jones. She died in 1912, and is buried in Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Frankin County, Ohio.] Page 8: A. E. Silcott and Joseph (J H) Plum, witnesses to Emily s statement, 28 Nov Page 8: Emily appoints Joseph A. Wright to be her attorney at law in matters concerning the pension for her husband s service. Signed by Emily Jane Lindsey. Witnessed by Curran Millikan and R. A. Robinson. 13 Nov Page 9: R. A. Robinson, Notary Public, and Richard Millikan, clerk of the Court of Common Pleas, Fayette County, at the Court House in Washington, 28 Nov Page 11: 9 June Similar statement as page 7. Emily is age 23 on this one [according to her death certificate, Emily would have been 18]. David died on 7 Feb Emily and David married at Shuger Grove, Ohio. Emily appoints J. C. Hays as her attorney at law. [Sugar Grove is the area in the southern portion of Union Township and the northern portion of Perry Township in Fayette County. Sugar Creek forms the boundary between the two townships. David Lindsey appeared on the 1850 census living in the Sugar Grove area in the household of Samuel Coffman. Coffman s property bordered that of John Orr, who married Mary Ann Lindsey in Fayette County in Coffman was Orr s nephew, a son of Christopher Coffman and Jean/Jane Orr. It is likely that David Lindsey was a son of Mary Ann Lindsey Orr. See the map that follows the pension abstract, below.] John Lindsey and J. P. Robinson state they knew David F. Lindsey before and while he served as a soldier. They say Emily Lindsey was reputed and acknowledged as David s wife, and that the county paid David s money out of the Widows fund. Emily s children are Anna E. Lindsey age 4, and Leona Lindsey age 1. [John Lindsey also made statements for Hannah Lindsey McMicken to help her secure a widow s pension for the service of her son, John McMicken: ]

David died of fever at Camp Dennison on 6 Feb Page 23: 13 Nov John King, MG, certifies that he married David Lindsey and Emily J. Pertee on 18 th March L.D. Willard, Judge of the Probate Court for Fayette County, certifies a true copy of the marriage certificate. Page 25: Rev. James P. Porter married Calvin S. Shaw and Emily J. Lindsey on 7 July James S. Coryell, Probate Judge for Adams County, certified the marriage on 23 Aug Page 27: 21 May 1870 John (J. N.) Salisbury, a practicing physician of Russellville, Brown County, Ohio, states that he is well acquainted with the family of David Lindsey, and that he was present when Annie Elizabeth Lindsey was born in Brown County on 8 Oct Page 29: 16 Sept T. J. McCorkle, a physician of Staunton in Fayette County, states that he is well acquainted with the family of David Lindsey, and that he was present when Leoni Lindsey was born in Fayette County on 19 April Page 39: 23 Aug 1872 Jason McDermed, legal guardian of Annie E. and Leoni Lindsey, appoints David Dunbar as his attorney at law. States that his residence is Manchester, Adams County. Page 44: 27 May 1908: Emily J. Jones of Columbus, Franklin County, requests that her pension be restored because both Calvin S. Shaw and Warren S. Jones, her husbands after David Lindsey, have died. Shaw died 4 Aug. 1875, and Jones died 6 May Page 46: 19 Sept Emily J. Jones of Columbus, Ohio, age 73, states that her maiden name was Emily J. Purtee, and that she was born in Adams County, Ohio on 9 Aug Page 51: 27 July Bureau of Pensions, Washington D.C. Request for further medical information and physical description of David. F. Lindsey. Lindsey was age 31, 5 feet 6 inches, blue eyes, sandy hair and sandy complexion. He was treated for Rheumatism from Jan. 17 th to Feb. 7 th, 1862, when he died. Page 52: 16 March 1865 S. B. Yeoman states that he was a captain of Company A, 54 th Regiment, in 1861 when David Lindsey became diseased at Camp Dennison. David was taken sick with the [can t read it], which became chronic, and at the same time, he became afflicted with Pericarditus. David was apparently sound when he entered the service, but was slightly predisposed to the former condition, which never would have become serious if he had not become ill with the second condition after entering the service. Pages 58 and 59: - 3 Apr S. B. Yeoman of Fayette County states that he knew David Lindsey before and during his time in the service. David was a hale and hardy man, and sound in every respect. About the 12 th or 15 th of January, 1862, David was kept on guard duty one night during a violent storm. The next day David was taken sick with a violent cold which developed into lung fever, which caused his death on 31 st of January, Yeoman states that David had good habits, and that he is certain David s death was caused by the illness contracted while David was in the line of duty.
Pages 62 and 63: 7 Apr E. B. Updegrove, a resident of Fayette County, states that he knew David Lindsey before and during his time in the service. Updegrove was in Company C of the 54 th Regiment in 1861 and 1862, and he was in the hospital when David Lindsey was brought there for treatment. From talking with Lindsey, Updegrove learned that David had gotten sick after being kept on guard duty the greater portion of a night during a violent storm. David died on the 31 st January Updegrove knew David to be a hale and hardy man, with good habits. He is confident that David died because of the disease contracted after entering the service. Pages 64 and 65: 17 May Archibald Stillsworth of Fayette County was a private in Company C of the 54 th Regiment. Stillsworth was on duty at the hospital at Camp Dennison in January of 1862 when David Lindsey was brought in [most of Stillsworth s statement is similar to those of Updegrove and Yeoman, above]. Lindsey died in Stillworth s arms on January 31 st, Page 68: 23 Aug Adams County - S.H. Phillips and G T. Goldsberry state that they were acquainted with David F. Lindsey, and that he was the father of Annie E. and Leoni Lindsey. [Both the 1850 and the 1870 census for Adams County listed Emily living with the family of Samuel H. Phillips, who was probably her grandfather. Emily s death certificate listed her parents as Jefferson Purtee and Susan Phillips.] Page 74: 5 Jan. 1865: Emily J. Jones of Liberty Township, Adams County, appoints John K. Billings as her attorney to look into the papers involving her pension. Her former agent, G. A. Wright, is now dead. Witnesses were Wm. B. Stewart and J. M. Wells. Page 79: 1 June 1908 J. G. Lindsey, age 53, of 801 Oak St., Columbus, Franklin County, states that he is the nephew of the late David F. Lindsey, and that he knew Emily when she was married to David. Emily remarried after David died, to Calvin Shaw. J. G. Lindsey was not present when Shaw died, but he knew that he had been bitten by a dog, and had died as a result of the bite. J. G. also knew of the recent death of Emily s husband, Warren S. Jones, even though he was not present when Jones died, nor did he attend the funeral. Emily has no property, and she is old and feeble, and cannot support herself. Emily did not divorce Jones, and she has not remarried since his death. [J. G. Lindsey was John Gardner Lindsey, who lived at 801 Oak St. until 1909, per Columbus city directory listings. Lindsey s son, Bruce E. Lindsey, and daughter, Byrdie P. Lindsey, were also listed at 801 Oak Street. John Gardner Lindsey was a son of William Johnson Lindsey, who was born ca in Mason Co., Kentucky. The 1860 census for Adams County lists the family of David and Emily J. Lindsey just below the family of William J. Lindsey.] Page 85: 4 June Ann E. Stephens, age 70, of Bentonville, Adams County, states that she is the aunt of Emily J. Jones, and that she knew Emily when she was married to David F. Lindsey. After David died, Emily remarried, to Calvin Shaw, and then to Warren S. Jones, both of whom died. Emily has never married but three times, and she did not divorce Warren S. Jones. Emily has no property and no income, and there is no one who is legally bound to support her. [Ann E. Stephens was the former Ann E. Phillips, a daughter of Samuel H. Phillips. Ann married George Stephens.] Page 87: Recorded 13 July 1908: R. R. Stephenson of Manchester, Adams County, was the attending physician when Calvin Shaw was ill. Shaw died 1 Aug
Page 89: 26 June B. F. Wilson, age 30, of Manchester, Adams County, states that he was the undertaker who buried Warren S. Jones. Jones died on 6 Aug. 1908, and was buried in Kirker Cemetery on 8 Aug Page 92: 22 Aug J. G. Bradley and Maggie Bradley, ages 67 and 66, of Bentonville, Adams County, state that they were well acquainted with Emily Jones when she was married to Calvin Shaw. They lived in the same neighborhood as Calvin and Emily, and they knew Calvin and Emily from the time they married until Calvin died. Emily and Calvin were never divorced. Page 107: 24 May 1920 Emily J. Jones of Columbus, Franklin County, applies for an increase in her pension, from $20 per month to $30 per month. Emily believes she is entitled to the increase because of a change in the pension act of May 1 st, Page 118: 24 Oct Bill submitted for $315, by Bruce Emerson Lindsey, M.D., who attended Emily J. Jones from Aug. 14 th to Oct. 13 th, He made 102 calls, on successive days. Page 120: 25 Oct Receipt to Besse E. Jones, for $100, by Denton, Donaldson & Hughes, Funeral Directors, for funeral expenses for Emily J. Jones. Pages 122 and 123: 27 Oct Request for reimbursement by Besse Jones, age 40, of Columbus, Franklin County, for expenses accrued during the last illness and burial of Emily Jane Jones. Emily was the widow of David F. Lindsey. David only married once, to Emily, whose maiden name was Emily Jane Purtee. There were two life insurance policies on Emily, one for $89, and one for $96. Besse Jones, the beneficiary, was the daughter of Emily Jones, and she paid half the premiums. Emily also paid half. When Emily died, she owned $150. Besse used $100 to pay toward funeral expenses, and $50 to pay the doctor. The cause of Emily s death was arterio sclerosis. Emily s illness began on 13 Aug Bruce E. Lindsey was her doctor. Besse Jones and Bertha Marsh nursed Emily during her illness. Emily died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha Marsh, on 14 Oct She was buried in Kirker Cemetery in Adams County, Ohio. The doctor s bill was $315 and the funeral expenses were $ Besse Jones also paid $25 for medicine. Page 124: 27 Oct Mary A. Nalls and Lenore O Brien witness Besse Jones request for reimbursement. They have known Besse for 10 years. Bruce E. Lindsey signs a statement saying that his bill has not been paid, except for $50. Most of the remaining pages concern the bills for Emily s illness and burial. Due to the redundancy of information, I did not abstract any more of the pages. Source: Fold3.com (accessed on 28 April 2015) National Archives Catalog Title: Case Files of Approved Pension Applications of Widows and Other Veterans of the Army and Navy Who Served Mainly in the Civil War and the War With Spain, compiled
Record Group: 15 Fold3 Publication Year: 2008 Short Description: Approved pension applications of widows and other dependents of Civil War veterans who served between 1861 and State Of Service: Ohio The 1875 map of the southern portion of Union Township, Fayette County, Ohio is included here to show how closely Lindsey family members lived near each other in the area. It is about 2 ½ to 3 miles from Mary Snider Lindsey Richard s home to the John Orr property, with a road that links the properties. George M. Lindsey lived on the other side of Sugar Creek in Perry Township. Mahala Lindsey Resler lived just over the border in Greene Township. I made a small cross to show the location of the Sugar Grove Methodist Episcopal Church and cemetery. It is known that David F. Lindsey, George M. Lindsey, and Hannah Lindsey McMicken are all buried there. It is likely that Mary Ann Lindsey Orr and Mary Lindsey Snider Richards are also buried there, but this has not been validated at the time of this writing. All of the Lindsey s were born in Kentucky (probably Mason County) except Mary Ann Lindsey Orr, who was likely their mother. According to the 1850 census, Mary Ann was born in Maryland in Biographies for children of Mahala Lindsey Resler and William Johnson Lindsey (proved brother of David F. Lindsey) state that their father s name was John. The Fayette County death register (George died in 1877) lists the parents of George M. Lindsey as John and Mary Lindsey. It is my hypothesis that John and Mary Ann Lindsey were the parents of all the Lindsey s listed here, plus William Johnson Lindsey, who lived in Adams County.
