3 PBX USB Functionality Introduction Page 3 Both the IP401 and IP403 Office systems have a single USB Type B port. The USB connect can be used for dialling out as a TA. The connected PC is setup and seen as a remote manager. The USB connection does not communicate with the system loader and so cannot be used for emergency recovery. WARNING Do not connect the IP Office USB port to a PC without having the IP Office USB software available. Doing otherwise will automatically start the Windows USB device wizard and requests for a device driver. Once an USB device has been installed it can be awkward to make Windows "forget" the driver associated with it. Supported Operating Systems The USB functionality is intended to be compatible with the "Universal Serial Bus Class Definitions for Communication Devices" version 1.1, see Consequently it may operate with a host that is compliant with that standard, but this is not guaranteed other than for those operating systems specified below. Supported Operating Systems Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (98SE) Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (ME) Microsoft Windows 2000 (all versions) It is NOT supported under the following operating systems: Unsupported Operating Systems Microsoft Windows 3 (all versions) Microsoft Windows 95 Microsoft Windows 98 (Gold) Microsoft Windows NT (all versions) USB Installation Page 3

4 Page 4 USB Installation The process for installation of the IP Office USB software varies between operating systems. In all cases you will require the following: A USB cable with a Type B male connector at the IP Office end. A disk containing the IP Office USB software. Normally this is found in the USBDriver folder on the IP Office Admin CD. Windows 98 Second Edition 1. Connect the USB cable between the PC and IP Office system. 2. The Add New Hardware Wizard should appear. Place the disk containing the software in the PC's drive and click Next. If the IP Office installation wizard begins cancel it. 3. Select Display a list... and click Next. 4. Click Have Disk Click Browse and choose the drive, Select the USBDriver folder and click OK. Click OK on the Install From Disk form. 6. Select IP Office USB Port and click Next. Click Next. 7. An Insert Disk error pop-up appears. Click OK and browse to the USBDriver folder. 8. Click Finish to complete installation. 9. A new window should pop up briefly to say that Windows has detected a new modem and is installing the drivers for it. No user action should be necessary. 10. Open Control Panel and then open Modems. If there was not previously a modem on the PC it will be necessary to complete the Location Information form. It should then be possible to see an entry on the Modem Properties form with description IP Office USB Modem. USB Installation Page 4

5 Page 5 Windows Millennium Edition (ME) 1. Connect the USB cable between the PC and IP Office system. 2. The Add New Hardware Wizard should appear. Place the disk containing the software in the PC's drive and click Next. If the IP Office installation wizard begins cancel it. 3. Select IP Office USB Port and click OK. 4. If there are any Version Conflict, choose Yes to keep the existing (newer) file. 5. Click Finish to complete installation of the IP Office USB Port. 6. A new window should pop up briefly to say that Windows has detected a new modem and is installing the drivers for it. No user action should be necessary. 7. Open Control Panel and then open Modems. If there was not previously a modem on the PC it will be necessary to complete the Location Information form. It should then be possible to see an entry on the Modem Properties form with description IP Office USB Modem. Windows Connect the USB cable between the PC and IP Office system. 2. The Found New Hardware Wizard should appear. Place the disk containing the software in the PC's drive and click Next. If the IP Office installation wizard begins cancel it. 3. Select Search for a suitable driver... and click Next. 4. Check CD-ROM drives. Uncheck others. 5. Make sure that Windows has selected mdmavusb.inf. Click Next. 6. Expect a warning about lack of Microsoft digital signature. Click Yes. 7. Hardware Install window becomes visible. Wait, eventually click Finish. 8. Open Control Panel and then open Phone and Modem Options. If there was not previously a modem on the PC it will be necessary to complete the Location Information form. It should then be possible to see an entry on the Modem tab with description IP Office USB Modem. USB Installation Page 5

6 Configuring Dial-Up Networking Overview Page 6 At this point it should be possible to use the "Connect to the Internet" wizard from the desktop without any further configuration. Alternatively it may be desired to make a connection to the local network. The following instructions describe how to achieve this. Configure the PBX 1. Using the Manager application open the IP Office's configuration. 2. Select the RAS entry and the open the DialIn tab. 3. Choose an unused extension number and enter it into the Extension field. Click OK. 4. Click OK and then upload the new configuration to the IP Office. USB Installation Page 6

7 Configure the PC Page 7 1. Start Programs Accessories Communications Dial-Up Networking. 2. Open Make New Connection. Click Next. 3. Choose a name for the connection and select the IP Office USB Modem. Click Next. 4. Enter the extension number that was chosen (see "Configure the PBX" on page 6) in the Telephone Number field. Click Next and then Finish. 5. Open the properties of the newly created dial-up networking item. Uncheck Use area code and Dialing Properties. 6. Select the Networking tab. The only Allowed network protocol check should be TCP/IP. 7. If a static IP address is required, click TCP/IP Settings... and enter the required settings. The default is for a server assigned IP address, but for that to work the DHCP mode setting on the IP Office must be Server. 8. Finish the configuration of the new dial-up networking entry. 9. Select Connect (right click menu). 10. Fill in User name with RemoteManager. 11. Fill in the Password field with whatever has been set for the Remote Manager user on the IP Office. The default value is thepword. 12. Click Connect. 13. The connection should go through the various verification phases and become established with a new icon in the System Tray.
