1 Page 1 of 3 TITLE: POLICY: RATIONALE: ACADEMIC ADVISING OF MASTER'S DEGREE AND POST- MASTER S NON-DEGREE SEEKING CERTIFICATE STUDENTS Academic advising is provided by the University and the College of Nursing to help students succeed in the nursing program of studies. The Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs provides academic advising to all master s degree and post-master s non-degree seeking certificate students throughout the program of studies. The UF College of Nursing and the University of Florida Graduate School are supportive of each student's right to receive appropriate academic advising. PROCEDURE: 1. Upon admission to graduate studies, each student in the master s degree or post-master s non-degree seeking certificate program is assigned an Academic Advisor by the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs (ADASA). Students are informed of their advisor in their admission letter. 2. The Office of Academic and Student Affairs develops Academic Advising/ Registration materials approximately two months prior to the beginning of each semester. The course/classroom schedules and advisement information is accessible on the College of Nursing Website ( under Current Students then Advisement Schedules for each semester. 3. The Academic Advisor will provide dates and times for routine academic advisement appointments to students each semester via , prior to the registration period, and at additional times based on student request or need. All students are responsible for maintaining contact with their Academic Advisor. Students may request academic advising at additional times as needed. 4. A student advising database will be maintained in the Office of the ADASA that includes dates of advising appointments and other pertinent information that can be utilized for auditing and accreditation purposes. 5. The Academic Advisor documents routine advising on the Advising Record (Attachment #1) and sends the original to the ADASA for placement in the student s official record. The ADASA s office distributes copies as indicated.

The Academic Advisor will advise master s degree students concerning curriculum plans, academic progression, University resources, and requirements for graduation including the final comprehensive examination (Policy S-3.04: Examination Requirements for Master s Degree Students). 7. The Academic Advisor will advise post master s non-degree seeking certificate students concerning curriculum plans, academic progression, and University resources. 8. Advising of a confidential or sensitive nature including grades is documented via hard copy only. 9. The Academic Advisor will file a signed copy of the curriculum plan and any advisement notation in the student's record in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs prior to enrollment and initial admission. 10. Any changes in a student's curriculum plan will require submission of a Petition for Revision of Curriculum Plan form (Policy S-3.07: Out-of-Sequence Progression for Masters Degree and Post-Masters Non-Degree Seeking Certificate Students). 11. The ADASA will advise master s degree students on selecting a Supervisory Committee Chairperson and a faculty representative (Policy S-3.04: Examination Requirements for Master s Degree Students). 12. Supervisory Committee Appointment Process: a. The Supervisory Committee Appointment Form (Attachment #2) is ed to students by the ADASA s office. b. The student completes the form by adding student information and the name of the Supervisory Committee Chairperson. The Supervisory Committee Chairperson is required to have graduate faculty status and preferably shares the student's clinical focus. c. The student submits the completed form to the Office of Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs (ADASA). This form must be submitted no later than the end of the second semester of study for full time students and the end of the 4 th semester for part time students. d. The ADASA forwards the completed form for approval to the Department Chair. e. The ADASA submits the signed form to the Graduate School via the Graduate Information Management System (GIMS). f. A revised form is required when there is a change of the Supervisory Committee Chairperson.
