1 MODULE A3 Master Extension Units 9 12 Reading P 1 Read the introduction to the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and then read the extract from the play. Answer the question. What is the biggest problem for Romeo and Juliet in this play? Romeo and Juliet is the most famous of all Shakespeare s plays. It is the story of passionate young love in the beautiful Italian city of Verona. Romeo and Juliet Act 2 Scene 1 A secret Benvolio, Mercutio and Romeo are in the garden outside the Capulets house. Romeo is hiding from the others. Benvolio Come on, Mercutio. It s late. Let s go home. 1 Where s Romeo? Mercutio I saw him a few minutes ago. Romeo! Romeo! Come on, forget about Rosaline! (He laughs.) Forget about love! Come with us! 5 They leave, then Romeo comes out. Romeo It s easy for him to laugh he s never been in love. I must be near Juliet. I love her. Juliet opens a window and looks out. But look! What light is that? It is the east, and 10 Juliet is the sun! (He hides.) Juliet Oh, Romeo! What s in a name? You are a Montague and I am a Capulet. They re just names, they don t mean anything. Why are our families enemies? I love you, and that s the only 15 thing that matters. Romeo You re right, Juliet. (He comes out again.) Nothing else is important. Call me love, not Romeo. Juliet I know that voice. Romeo! Why did you come 20 here? If my cousin finds you here, he ll kill you. Romeo It s love that brings me here. I am not afraid of Capulet swords. I think nothing of the danger, if you really love me. Juliet Romeo you ve already heard me say it I love 25 you. Do you love me? Perhaps I love you too much. Perhaps it s wrong to say so openly that I love you Romeo Lady, I love you and I will always love you. Tell me, when can we be together together for the 30 rest of our lives? The Nurse calls out from inside the house. Juliet Oh, Romeo I must go. Listen. If you really want to marry me, I ll send my Nurse to you tomorrow. Give her a message for me. Tell me when and 35 where to meet you, and I ll follow you, my lord, anywhere in the world. Good night, my love. Romeo Good night, sweet Juliet. (Juliet closes the window and goes inside.) I must talk to the priest, Father Lawrence. I ll ask him to marry us, 40 secretly, without telling our families. Taken from Romeo and Juliet, Oxford Bookworms Playscripts. 2 Read the extract again and decide if each statement is correct or incorrect. Tick 4 YES (Correct) or NO (Incorrect). CANYONING Canyoning Half Day per person adventures in the French Pyrenees (includes French local transport Pyrenees and equipment hire) adventures in the Revision and Extension Price guide Half Day per person (includes local transport and equipment hire) Whole Day per person (includes local transport and equipment hire) What is Canyoning? Canyoning is for people who want excitement! If you ve ever looked down from a high bridge and admired the rushing water and the rocks below, then imagine what it would be like to be down there in the river, following it towards the sea. Canyoning is the art of moving down and along a mountain river by any means possible. Sometimes you walk in the water, sometimes you climb down rocks, and sometimes you swim or use an inflatable dinghy. Do I need to be experienced? Come and join one of our canyoning trips and enjoy the excitement of this new and fascinating sport. Discover the secret world of mountain pools and caves which you can t get to on foot. What should I bring? We provide you with a neoprene suit to keep you warm in the water. As well as this, you should bring trainers or tennis shoes with good soles. They will get wet and dirty, so don t bring designer gear! You should also bring a swimming costume and a small rucksack. Waterproof boxes are available for sandwiches and personal possessions like keys and money. Is it dangerous? All mountain sports have an element of risk, but this is minimised if you have the right equipment and a knowledgeable leader. Our canyoning trips are led by qualified guides. The area we visit is very varied some sections are steep and difficult, while others are relatively gentle. It s not unusual to see eight-year-old children on our easier trips! Your guide will start at a level that is appropriate for you, and we always make absolute beginners feel welcome. 2 Read the text again. 3 MODULE A3 Master Extension Units 9 12 Writing P T 1 Read the paragraphs which tell the story of Romeo and Juliet. Put them in the correct order. Write 1, 2, etc., in the spaces. The Story of Romeo and Juliet a After the party, Romeo and Juliet discover that their families are enemies. b Juliet wakes up to find Romeo dead and kills herself with his dagger. The Montague and Capulet families agree to end their war now that their children are both dead. c Romeo goes to see Friar Lawrence, who agrees to marry them as it may help end the war between their families. Romeo and Juliet meet at the Friar s cell, and they are married in secret. d At the same time as Romeo tells Benvolio about Rosaline, Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she must marry Paris and that there will be a big party to celebrate this. Romeo decides to go to the party to see Rosaline, but while he is there, he meets and falls in love with Juliet. e The day after they get married, Romeo s friend, Mercutio has a fight with Juliet s cousin, Tybalt. Romeo arrives and tries to stop it, but Tybalt kills Mercutio. This makes Romeo angry and he kills Tybalt. Romeo, now a murderer, has to leave Verona. f Even though Romeo has just discovered their families are enemies, he visits Juliet at her house. They declare their love for each other and decide to get married. g Romeo leaves Verona and Paris, a friend of the Prince, announces he will marry Juliet. Juliet says she will kill herself rather than marry Paris. Friar Lawrence gives her a special drug which will make her seem dead for forty-eight hours. The Friar writes to Romeo to tell him the plan, but the message doesn t get to him. h 1 The play begins with a fight between servants of two important families, the Montagues and the Capulets. After the fight, Romeo tells his cousin, Benvolio, that he is in love with Rosaline. i When Romeo arrives at Juliet s tomb, Paris is there. They fight and Romeo kills Paris. Romeo thinks Juliet is dead, and poisons himself. j While the Friar is writing to Romeo, Juliet takes the drug and her family think that she is dead. Romeo hears the news of Juliet s death and buys poison. He intends to kill himself on Juliet s tomb. 2 Now write the story of the play in 100 words. 30 New Horizons Resource material
