Improper installation can result in problems ranging from noisy operation to property or equipment damage. Installation requires some mechanical experience and aptitude. Depending upon installer s knowledge and skill, installation of a room air conditioner can take between and hours. Before Beginning Any Installation Carefully read all instructions for the installation. Make sure each step or procedure is understood and any special considerations are taken into account. Assemble all tools, hardware, and supplies needed to complete the installation. Some items may need to be purchased locally. Make sure everything needed to install air conditioner is on hand before starting. After deciding where to install unit, closely look the location over both inside and outside the home. Note any potential obstacles or problems that might be encountered. Choose a more suitable location if necessary.
3 Important Safety Instructions Recognize Safety Symbols, Words, and Labels The following symbols and labels are used throughout this manual to indicate immediate or potential safety hazards. It is owner s responsibility to read and comply with all safety information and instructions accompanying these symbols. Failure to heed safety information increases the risk of personal injury, property damage, and/or product damage. DANGER DANGER Immediate hazards which WILL result in severe personal injury or death. WARNING WARNING Hazards or unsafe practices which COULD result in severe personal injury or death. CAUTION CAUTION Hazards or unsafe practices which COULD result in minor or moderate personal injury, product damage, or property damage. Important Safety Information WARNING To avoid risk of personal injury or death due to electrical shock: Air conditioners covered in this manual are equipped with a three-prong (grounding) plug for protection against possible shock hazards. DO NOT, under any circumstances, alter grounding plug on air conditioner. If a two-prong (non-grounding) wall receptacle is encountered, contact a qualified electrician and have the receptacle replaced with a properly grounded wall receptacle in accordance with the National Electrical Code and all applicable local codes and ordinances. Air conditioner must be grounded at all times. Do not remove warning tag from power cord. Do not use a two-prong adapter with this air conditioner. Do not use an extension cord with this air conditioner. Grounding prong CAUTION To avoid risk of personal injury, property damage, or product damage due to the weight of this air conditioner and sharp edges that may be exposed: Air conditioners covered in this manual pose an excessive weight hazard. Two or more people are needed to move and install the air conditioner. To prevent injury or strain, use proper lifting and carrying techniques when moving air conditioner. Carefully inspect location where air conditioner will be installed. Be sure it will support the weight of the air conditioner over an extended period of time. Handle air conditioner with care. Wear protective gloves whenever lifting or carrying the air conditioner. AVOID the sharp metal fins on the air conditioner evaporator and condenser coils.
4 Electrical Requirements Grounding Instructions WARNING To avoid risk of personal injury or death due to electrical shock: Electrical grounding is required on all air conditioners. Check with a qualified electrician if you are not sure intended electrical outlet is properly grounded. DO NOT ground to gas line. DO NOT use cold water pipe for ground if pipe is interrupted by plastic, non-metallic gaskets, or other insulating (non-conducting) materials. DO NOT modify plug on power cord. If plug does not fit electrical outlet, have a matching outlet installed by a qualified electrician. DO NOT have a fuse in the neutral or ground circuit. A fuse in the neutral or ground circuit could result in an electrical shock. DO NOT use an extension cord with this device. DO NOT use an adapter plug with this device. Observe all local codes and ordinances. For safety, air conditioner must be grounded. All air conditioners have a power supply cord with a threeprong grounding plug. To minimize possible electrical shock hazard, the power cord must only be plugged into a matching grounding wall receptacle in accordance with the National Electrical Code and any applicable local codes and ordinances. If an appropriate grounding-type wall receptacle is not available, have a properly grounded wall receptacle installed by a qualified electrician. If codes permit, and a separate grounding wire is used, have a qualified electrician determine if grounding path is adequate and uninterrupted by plastic, non-metallic gaskets, or other insulating (non-conductive) materials. Electrical Connection Devices covered in this manual require a 60 Hz supply. Refer to name plate on air conditioner for exact voltage requirements. Voltage requirements can also be determined by the type of plug on air conditioner. See following table (Table ). Table. Do not use an extension cord. If power supply cord does not reach intended wall receptacle, have a qualified electrician install or move an appropriate receptacle closer to unit. Do not use an adapter plug. If intended wall receptacle does not match plug on air conditioner, have a qualified electrician replace receptacle with correct type. Receptacle Wiring Receptacle wiring must be of adequate size for unit. Refer to unit identification plate for exact power requirements. Power requirements can also be determined by the type of plug on unit (see Table ). Minimum size of wiring, based on power requirements, is: Units up to 0 amps: gauge 0 0 amp units: 0 gauge Use copper wire only. It is owner s responsibility to provide proper and adequate receptacle wiring that conforms to all applicable codes. All wiring should be installed by a qualified electrician.
5 Installation Required Tools and Equipment CAUTION To avoid risk of personal injury, property damage, or product damage due to air conditioner weight and exposed sharp edges: Air conditioners pose an excessive weight hazard. 6 Installation Installation Requirements See Figure. Inspect window track, sash, and sill, and make sure each is in good repair. Ensure window will bear weight of air conditioner over an extended period of time. Measure window opening to be certain air conditioner will fit (see dimensions shown in Figure ). Ensure lower right inside corner of window is within 5 inches (small chassis) or 7 inches (mini chassis) of an appropriate wall receptacle. See Electrical Requirements section of manual for additional information. NOTE: Installation kit is designed for most double-hung windows that do not have storm windows installed. If a storm window is installed, or if installation is in a mobile home, window sill may need modification. See suggested procedures in Storm Window Modification or Mobile Home Window Modification paragraphs. Figure. Typical Double-Hung Window. Window frame. Window track. Outdoor sash. Indoor sash 5. Window sill (indoor) Window dimensions: 6. 5 /8-inches to ½-inches wide (mini chassis) -inches to 7½-inches (small chassis) 7. ¼-inches minimum (mini chassis) 5¼-inches (small chassis) Storm Window Modification See Figure. Installation requires a -inch clearance between top of window sill and top of storm window frame. If storm window frame does not allow for clearance, remove frame or create clearance by adding a ½-inch wide (minimum) wood strip along entire width of sill. Wood strip must be thick enough to provide the required -inch clearance between window sill and storm window frame. Fasten wood strip to sill with three countersunk wood screws (not provided) to ensure a smooth surface for mounting kit. Next, place a 6-inch X ¼-inch wood block on center of outside window sill, midway between sides of window frame. Wood block must be same thickness as wood strip installed on indoor sill. Attach block to outside sill using countersunk flat head screws. Mounting kit can now be installed. Figure. Window Frame Modification. Indoor sash (shown open). Wood strip (½-inches wide). Place carpenters level between indoor sill and outdoor end of support bracket. Using 9 /6- inch wrench, turn adjustment foot on support bracket until level tilts ¼ bubble toward outdoor side. NOTE: Adjusting support bracket for a ¼ bubble outdoor slope should result in a ¼-inch backward slope on installed air conditioner. A backward slope on air conditioner is required for proper condensate drainage. 6. See Figure 9. Compress curtains on air conditioner in (towards air conditioner) as far as possible. Place air conditioner in window, centered over support bracket, with bottom rail on air conditioner outer case seated in gap between support bracket and back of indoor sill. Lower indoor sash and position air conditioner to allow sash to sit snug against rear of top rail. 7. See Figure 9. Place carpenters level on top of air conditioner. Ensure installed air conditioner slopes approximately ¼-inch to outdoor (back) side. If necessary, remove unit from window and turn support bracket adjusting foot to obtain proper slope. 8. See Figure 0. Position sash bracket (Item G in installation kit) on top right side of indoor sash, flush with outdoor sash. Secure bracket to outside sash using #8 x ¾-inch hex screw (Item H in installation kit). Drill a /8-inch pilot hole to make screw easier to install. For mini chassis unit, repeat with remaining bracket on left side of indoor sash. CAUTION To prevent damage to window locking or lifting mechanisms from improperly placed sash bracket screw, inspect window carefully before drilling or installing screw in sash. 8
9 Installation Figure 0. Installing Sash Brackets. Indoor sash. Sash bracket. #8 x ¾-inch hex screw 0. See Figure. Measure width of window. Cut window seal strip (Item I in installation kit) to width of window. Stuff seal strip between top of indoor sash and glass in outdoor sash. Ensure strip provides a tight seal to prevent insects and outdoor air from entering home. Figure. Installing Seal Strip. Window seal strip. Outdoor sash. Indoor sash 9. See Figure. Expand curtain assembly on one side of air conditioner until curtain is tight against window frame. Keeping curtain tight against frame, mark spot on indoor sash where hole on top of curtain is located. Next, mark spot on window sill at location of bottom anchor bracket on curtain. Drill a /8-inch pilot hole into spots marked on window sash and sill, then secure curtain to sash and sill using #8 x ¾-inch hex screws (Item H in installation kit). Repeat for remaining side curtain. Figure. Securing Side Curtain. Indoor sash. Side curtain. Curtain assembly top hole. Curtain assembly bottom anchor bracket. Inspect completed installation. Ensure all steps have been performed and all parts are tight and secure. If final check indicates a complete and solid installation, air conditioner can be safely operated. 9
