The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and some requirements of state laws; however, our staff is available to help you understand this information. Please contact your child s principal for help if you need assistance. The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting our web site or you may review a copy in the principal s office at your child s school. The report contains the following information: Student Assessment Data Elementary or middle school assessment results on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP), high school assessment results on Michigan Merit Exam (MME), and assessment results for students with disabilities on Michigan s Alternative Assessment Program (MI- Access or MEAP-Access) Presents achievement data for all five tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science, social studies, and writing) compared to targets for all students as well as subgroups of students. Helps parents understand achievement progress within schools and compare these to district and State achievement. In compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, the Americans with Disability Act of 1990, and the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act of 1977, it is the policy of the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District that no person shall on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, gender, age, disability, height, weight, or marital status be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination during any program, activity, service or in employment. 2 Annual Education Report Page 2 Accountability Scorecard Detail Data and Status Information is provided for the district and each school related to achievement targets in reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies answering questions like: Did the district (and schools) meet achievement targets for all students and subgroups of students? Did the district (and schools) meet achievement growth targets for all students and subgroups of students? Teacher Qualification Data Identifies teacher qualifications at district and school levels Reports percentage of core academic classes taught by teachers not considered highly qualified to teach such classes NAEP Data (National Assessment of Educational Progress) Provides State results of the national assessment in mathematics and reading every other year in grades 4 and 8 Review the table below listing our schools. The state has identified some schools with the status of Reward, Focus, or Priority. A Reward school is one that is outperforming other schools in achievement, growth, or is performing better than other schools with a similar student population. A Focus school is one that has a large achievement gap in 30% of its student achievement scores. A Priority school is one whose achievement and growth is in the lowest 5% of all schools in the state. Some schools are not identified with any of these labels. In these cases no status label is given. We will continue to analyze our achievement gaps, including the newest subgroup, which consists of the lowest performing 30% of students in the district. To raise achievement and close the gaps, our researchbased actions include: targeting the low performers through a tiered RtI literacy model; aligning, managing and monitoring curriculum; effective leadership; building instructional capacity; engaging parents and community; implementation

4 WOODHAVEN-BROWNSTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT Learning and Leading for Tomorrow Administration Offices and Board of Education Hall Road, Woodhaven, MI Phone Fax Mark Greathead Superintendent Annual Education Report A School Year Review Core Curriculum The Woodhaven-Brownstown School district s curriculum is continually being reviewed and revised to meet the needs of our students, as well as to ensure that it is consistent with the Michigan Core Curriculum, Benchmarks, Content Standards, Grade Level Content Expectations, (GLCE), High School Content Expectation (HSCE), Common Core State Standards, and High School Reform. The results of standardized, MME, ACT, and MEAP testing are reviewed at the district and building levels. Student performance was disaggregated based upon subgroups such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and special needs. Results of specific test items were reviewed to determine whether a different strategy, approach, or content area should be emphasized to improve student achievement. Staff met in grade level groups, as well as in core curricular areas, to ensure that students were receiving instruction in the necessary areas. At each grade level, consideration of curricula was an important part of the process of improvement and the goal of preparing students for lifelong learning. Woodhaven-Brownstown School District teachers and support staff continue to work at the building and district level to align curriculum, instruction and assessments with state and national standards. District School Improvement In the school year, the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District continued the process of MDE-AdvancEd/NCA accreditation. This process will expand our school improvement team membership and provide for collaborative participation across our district.

5 The District School Improvement Team adopted the following vision, mission and dedicated goals for the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District: Vision Statement Learning and Leading for Tomorrow Mission Statement Engage, Enlighten, Empower Woodhaven-Brownstown School District Dedicated Goals Student Achievement By 2015, all Woodhaven-Brownstown School District graduates will demonstrate knowledge and skills in mathematics, reading and writing that prepare them for success in post secondary education, work, and life. Indicators of Success Annual individual and school performance data will reflect growth in all core areas including English language arts, science, social studies, mathematics and the arts. All subgroups will show growth and improvement in performance data so that there will be no discernible achievements gaps by The WHS post graduate survey will reflect increased satisfaction in graduates perceptions of their preparation for post graduate education, work, and life. Aggregated and disaggregated tested performance of all WBSD students will be benchmarked against the highest performing district in Southeast Michigan and the State. 6 Instruction All Woodhaven-Brownstown School District instructional staff (teachers, instructional support staff, and administrators) are responsible and accountable for ensuring that every student receives high quality instruction in every school and in every classroom, every day. Indicators of Success The district will adopt and all instructional staff will implement a guaranteed, viable curriculum, aligned with state expectations. The district will adopt and all instructional staff will implement scheduled, standards based assessments (formative and summative) aligned with the guaranteed, viable curriculum. Regularly, throughout the school year, all instructional staff will analyze and use data from assessments to monitor student performance and to plan and implement research based instructional strategies. All instructional staff will implement the district s rigorous curriculum with clear and measurable expectation for student learning relevant to every student s needs, and with a focus upon positive relationships. Approved by the Board of Education Communication All Woodhaven-Brownstown School District staff will communicate consistently and effectively with students, parents, community members, and one another in order to improve student achievement, foster positive relationships, and connect with the community. Indicators of Success All instructional staff will use district provided communications tools to inform parents and students of school progress and achievement. All district staff will regularly utilize district provided communication tools to inform stakeholders. All district staff will collaborate regularly with fellow stakeholders to share leadership, support student learning and advance. Approved by the Board of Education
