1 2 nd Grade Math Lesson Plans Week 3, Day 1 Topic of the Week: Subtraction Topic Classroom Culture Birthday Bar Graph 10 None The teacher will have the campers create a classroom bar graph by having them line up according to their birthdays. Some of the questions that the teachers can pose during the activity are as follows: ~Which month has the most birthdays? ~Which months have the same number of birthdays? ~Which month has the least number of birthdays? Problem of the Week Introduction to POTW #1 10 POTW #1 Please distribute the POTW to each camper on Day 1 of each week. There will be a new problem each week to reflect the skills for that week. Campers should read the problem silently as you read it to them. Then allow some think, pair, share time with a partner for them to brainstorm some ideas about the problem. This think, pair, share time can include discussion around what the problem is asking, how they will solve the problem, what they will need to solve the problem, etc. Please allow some pairs to share their discussions with the class. At this time, allow campers to ask questions about the POTW and inform them that they will work on this during the week either in class when they have time or at home. They can work independently or with a partner. Tell campers that they will share their solutions to the problem on the last day of the week, so they should make sure it s complete by that time. Explain to campers that it is okay if they do not get every part correct, but that they should work their best and at least try to complete every section of the problem. Remind campers that they can earn prizes based on their attendance and the work that they complete during camp, so they should work hard to get a stamp for completing their POTW! 1
2 Number Worlds Week 1 Lesson 2 Repeating Patterns Attribute Blocks (Pattern Blocks) Teacher s Manual page 4A Campers will build their own repeating patterns. They will work with partners and their partners will need to extend the pattern. To add movement to this activity and as a closure to the lesson, the teacher can have different shapes on construction paper (one shape per paper). The teacher can start the pattern by having the first few campers stand in the order of the pattern, and the remaining campers will need to find out how and where they should stand to extend the pattern. Please refer to the Teacher s Manual page 4A of the Number Patterns and Relationships section for detailed instructions on this activity. 2 nd Grade Math Lesson Plans Week 3, Day 2 Topic of the Week: Subtraction 2
3 Topic Math Read Aloud Number Worlds Board Games Math Read Aloud #1 The Penny Pot Week 3 Lesson 1 Patterns, Rules and Variables 15 Play Various Board Games 10 The Penny Pot by Stuart Murphy It s a Match! Page B13 Construction paper, 3 red sheets, 3 blue sheets (or any two different colors) Teacher s Manual page 22C (Number Patterns and Relationships section) Various board games Please read the book The Penny Pot to the campers. Tell the campers to be sure that they have their listening ears on because they will complete a fun activity tomorrow based on the story. Although there is a particular activity to go with each book that the campers will engage in each week, please do not hesitate to ask students questions during reading that will allow for comprehension and math discussions, as well as small activities that can be implemented during the reading of the book. Yesterday campers had experience with patterns as they relate to shapes. Today they will work with patterns on a number line. Campers will play It s a Match to find matching patterns and rules. Depending on class size, campers can get up all together to try to locate their partners or they can do it one at a time by standing up and reading their rule and the camper(s) with the matching rule can stand up if they think they have the match. Those campers can then be seated while the next camper presents. There are only 5 rules and number lines on this blackline master so you might want to have more than one student have the number line that matches the rule. This way, each camper can participate and it will take less time if only 5 campers have to get up and read. If time permits, those groups of campers that had the matches can then make patterns and other group members can guess their rule. Please refer to the Teacher s Manual page 22C in the Number Patterns and Relationships section for a detailed description of this activity. Campers should work in small groups to play one of the board games provided for the class. This time can also be used for small group time with the teacher. While some campers are playing board games, you can pull small groups for re-teaching or enrichment. 3

Murphy Coin Mat per player Coins for students to manipulate while playing games (lots of pennies) Pencil/paper for recording strategies Play Trading Coins (remediation) Use a coin mat for each player (see below) Collect one die and pile of coins with lots of pennies Each player rolls the die and then receives that number of pennies. Trade five pennies for a nickel. Keep playing and trading up for nickels and dimes. The first player to get a quarter wins. Students use math vocabulary to explain the trading for each turn; they may also write their strategies on scratch paper Play Hidden Coins (enrichment) 4
5 Number Worlds Board Games Week 3 Lesson 4 Patterns, Rules and Variables 15 Play Various Board Games 10 1 die per group Place a handful of coins under a napkin or piece of paper. Tell the other players how many coins you have and what the total is. Then ask the other players to guess what the coins are (guess and check strategy). Have students write down their strategies as they guess and explain their answer showing the value for each coin. Teacher should model each of the games before having students play independently. We re Functioning worksheet, page B15 Counters Teacher s Manual page 28A (Number Patterns and Relationships section) Various board games Campers will be required to deduce the rules of function machines with given in puts and outputs. The teacher will do a few examples of putting x number of counters in the input and output and have campers guess the rule. Campers can then work with a partner to try to guess the other s rules. Please refer to the Teacher s Manual page 28A of the Number Patterns and Relationships section for detailed instructions on this activity. Campers should work in small groups to play one of the board games provided for the class. This time can also be used for small group time with the teacher. While some campers are playing board games, you can pull small groups for reteaching or enrichment. 5

Campers can share their solutions as the teacher sees fit for class size, time, etc. However, if campers are working on this in class, or whenever possible, try to do some kid watching that will allow you collect notes about their work and solutions so that their presentations can be done in an order that you see best fit for meaningful discussions. Please keep this in mind each week. Present awards/incentives Number Worlds Week 4 Lesson 1 Variables and Equality Cover Up, page B17 Small Triangles of Construction Paper, 2 per Camper Teacher s Manual page 32C 6 Remind campers that they will receive their new POTW on Monday. Campers will solve for geometric shapes used as variables in equations. Campers will work in pairs as they each play detective to try and solve a problem by determining the missing value. Please refer to the Teacher s Manual page 32C for detailed instructions on this activity.

She had to make a few stops on the way down before meeting his dad on the first floor and going home. She had to go down one floor to drop off her jacket at The Neat and Tidy Cleaners. What floor did they need to go to? Write the correct number sentence. She told Ben they needed to go down to the sixth floor to buy a book from Read It and Weep Bookstore. How many floors did they have to go down? Write the correct number sentence. Before leaving, she told him she wanted to take him to the Dancing Donut Shop because he had been so patient. She said they needed to go down four floors. What floor will they go to? Write the correct number sentence. After getting donuts, they met Dad and went home. On a separate sheet of paper, draw a picture for each floor they visited.

10 2 nd Grade Math Lesson Plans Week 4, Day 1 Topic of the Week: Time Topic Classroom Culture Shape Scavenger Hunt 10 Geometric shapes around the classroom Chart paper Marker The teacher will brainstorm a list of geometric shapes on chart paper with the campers. Next to the word, the teacher will also draw the 2-dimensional (rectangle, square, triangle, and circle) and 3-dimensional (cone, cube, and cylinder) shapes. This will help the campers review what the shapes look like. The teacher will allow the campers to walk around the room in their teams (for example, Tremendous Tigers) and find as many examples of the shapes in the room as possible. For example, a tile on the floor will be a square. An option for the second grade teams will be to have the campers write down the objects that they found in the room and its corresponding shape on a piece of paper. After, about 5 minutes of having the camper teams circulate around the room finding objects that are specific shapes, have each team share out their findings. Problem of the Week Introduction to POTW #4 10 POTW #4 Please distribute the POTW to each camper on Day 1 of each week. There will be a new problem each week to reflect the skills for that week.
