American wool is an environmentally responsible fiber supporting a sustainable world. Nourished by native grasses and vegetation in the vast open rangelands of the western United States, wool bearing sheep are protected by shepherds and their guardian animals. U.S. wool is cultivated with conservation and earth-friendly practices in mind. As stewards of the earth, U.S. sheep producers have a vested interest in keeping the land bountiful. Land conservation and the sustainability of its resources are very important. Generations of family ranchers have cared for the natural landscapes that produce native forages. Today s producers continue to improve on these ecologically sound production practices to enrich the ecosystem for future generations. U.S. wool production provides a fiber as natural as where it is grown. info@sheepusa.org

4 About IWTO With a membership comprised of 60% of total wool production world-wide, encompassing the wool pipeline from sheep to shop, IWTO represents the interests of the wool textile trade at the global level. By facilitating industry strategy and ensuring standards in manufacturing and sustainability, IWTO fosters connection between members and all stakeholders through mutual support of opportunities for wool. IWTO s vision is a sustainable, proitable, international wool industry, working together for the future of our ibre. Our mission is to connect all parts of the wool supply chain in order to strengthen wool s credentials as the world s leading sustainable ibre and represent the wool industry at international level.
5 We accomplish our mission through the following activities: 1. Communicating the beneits and values of wool to both internal and external stakeholders 2. Documenting and disseminating the science that supports wool s unique natural properties 3. Linking members and international agencies and organisations 4. Governing the trading standards and regulations for wool across the world 5. Supporting a platform for information and knowledge-sharing We value: global thinking, transparency at all levels, sustainability and proitability
6 Foreword Dear Reader, Last year saw the publication of the new improved Market Information Report on the Global Wool Industry. This very comprehensive document was particularly well received by members of IWTO at a time when some grower countries had decided to abandon statistical market information. I believe our 130+ page Report not only ills an important void, it provides an essential service to the entire world wool textile pipeline, written by a neutral pen. This year the Market Information comes with more very welcome improvements and additions germane to the mission of IWTO. At our last Congress in Zhangjiagang we heard from several speakers about the truly global nature of our industry. Globalisation has always been a feature of the wool trade ever since the irst bales arrived in my home region of Yorkshire in Northern England from Australia in I am delighted to note that the new Market Information gives even greater coverage of world trade patterns and low with data tables on various wool products which collect millions of air miles from farm to shop. It was one of the compilers of the Report, Chris Wilcox, who reminded the IWTO Congress in Evian in 2004 that the abandoning of wool by major women s wear retailers was the cause of the greatest slump in wool production in the trade s two hundred year history. So I am happy to see the inclusion of world trade in women s dresses, a segment of the market that at last seems to be gradually returning to natural ibres following the extraordinary boom in women s woollen overcoats that sent the price of cardings and crossbreds to a very acceptable level.
7 In addition to expanded analysis of data trends in each chapter, the authors have included a welcome addition to the survey that records trends in wool prices from several more grower countries. Obtaining facts from igures is a dificult art and a tricky science. The IWTO Market Information is an example of best practice in this ield which I am delighted to commend to you and your colleagues. Peter Ackroyd IWTO President Brussels, December 2015
