1 The comforts of home cost less with insulation upgrades. Cool in the summer warm in the winter... always welcoming: the comforts of home are priceless, but your monthly energy bill is not. Whether you are buying a new house or making renovations, you can make your home more comfortable and more affordable with insulation upgrades. According to the Association for Better Insulation, improving your home s insulation can lower your heating & cooling bills by up to one third or more. 1 Show me the money. Traditional fiberglass batt insulation resists heat transfer, but it does not effectively block air infiltration. Closedcell spray foam is an effective insulation upgrade that seals cracks and crevices, minimizes air movement and lowers both heating and cooling costs. Manage moisture. As heat and air move through the walls, ceilings and floors of your home, moisture moves with them and increases the potential for mold, mildew and other moisture-related problems. Closed-cell spray foam expands on contact and cures to a rigid foam, sealing and insulating all of the hard-to-reach places that fiberglass batt cannot. Maximize R-value. R-value is the measure of heat resistance provided by insulation. To get the maximum benefit from R-value, insulating materials must be properly installed. Fiberglass batts, for example, lose R-value when they are compressed, as often happens when inserting these materials around window and door frames or when installing larger pieces in wall cavities. Spray foams and rigid foams are not susceptible to compression.

4 Rigid foams are particularly suited to exterior continuous insulation. This is a practice that has been compared to zipping up a winter coat: insulation is placed on the outside wall, underneath the home s brick face, shingles, vinyl siding or other exterior covering. It is superior to cavity insulation, which is placed on the interior wall between the home s framing studs a practice that leaves up to 25% of a home s exterior wall surface unprotected from heat loss. Continuous insulation with rigid foam is an excellent option for new construction and re-siding renovations. Buying a new home? In new construction, particularly larger homes and those with vaulted ceilings, upgraded insulation systems should include house wrap, rigid foam insulation on the exterior walls and closed-cell spray foam insulation on the interior walls. Be sure to ask your builder about insulation before your exterior walls are finished.
