1 Board Policy SANGER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BP (a) Instruction HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS The Governing Board desires to prepare all students to obtain a high school diploma to enable them to take advantage of opportunities for postsecondary education and employment. 1) Prescribed course of study 2) Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 per district guidelines 3) Completion of the Senior Exit Interview (cf Graduation Ceremonies and Activities) (cf Dropout Prevention) (cf Courses of Study) (cf Reciprocity of Academic Credit) The total number of semester credits required for the high school diploma is as follows: 1) Sanger High School 230 2) Sanger Adult School 170 3) Kings River Continuation & Taft Independent Study High School 210 4) Hallmark Charter School 230 Course Requirements for Sanger High School To obtain a high school diploma of graduation from Sanger High School, students shall complete at least the following courses in grades 9 through 12, with each course being one year unless otherwise specified: (Education Code 1. Four (4) courses in English (40 credits) (cf Reading/Language Arts Instruction) 2. Three (3) courses in mathematics to include ten (10) credits of Geometry/Integrated Math 2 with Algebra I/Integrated Math 1 as a prerequisite. (30 credits) Note: Algebra is a state requirement which applies to all students. If a student completes coursework in grade 7 or 8 that meets or exceeds state academic content standards for Algebra I, he or she shall be considered to have met the State algebra requirement. However, the completion of algebra coursework prior to grade 9 does not exempt a student from the requirement to take at least three years of mathematics in grades (Education Code ) (cf Academic Standards) (cf Mathematics Instruction)

2 BP (b) 3. Three (3) courses in science, including one (1) year of Biological Science and one (1) year of Physical/Earth Science. (30 credits) (cf Science Instruction) 4. Three (3) courses in Social Studies to include United States History, World History, American Government, and Economics (30 credits) (cf Civic Education) (cf History-Social Science Instruction) (cf Visual and Performing Arts Education) 6. Two (2) courses in Physical Education, unless the student has been otherwise exempted pursuant to other sections of the Education Code (Education Code (20 credits) (Note: Sanger Adult School does not require physical education as a graduation requirement.) (cf Physical Education) 7. Elective Courses A group of courses selected to complete the student s personal education plan (70 credits) Course Requirements for Kings River Continuation and Taft Independent Study To obtain a diploma of graduation for Kings River or Taft, students shall complete at least the following courses: 1. Four (4) courses in English (40 credits) 2. Two (2) mathematics courses (20 credits) to include Algebra I/Integrated Math 1 and one (1) additional math course 3. Two (2) science courses (20 credits) to include Biology and Physical/Earth Science. 4. Three (3) courses in Social Studies to include World History, United States History, American Government and Economics (30 credits)

Two (2) courses in Physical Education Courses unless the student has been otherwise exempted pursuant to other sections of the Education Code (Education Code (20 credits) 7. Elective Courses A group of courses selected to complete the student s personal education plan (70 credits) Course Requirements for Sanger Adult School To obtain a diploma of graduation from Sanger Adult School, students shall complete at least the following courses: 1. Four (4) courses in English (40 credits) to include English 9, World Literature, American Literature, and British Literature 2. Two (2) Mathematics courses (20 credits) to include Algebra/Integrated Math 1 and Math I 3. Two (2) science course (20 credits) to include Life Science and Physical Science 4. Three (3) courses in Social Students (30 credits) to include United States History, World History, Economics and American Government. 6. Elective courses: A group of courses selected to complete the student s personal education plan. (50 credits) Course Requirement for Hallmark Charter School 1. Four (4) courses in English (40 credits) 2. Three (3) courses in Mathematics to include ten (10) credits of Algebra/Integrated Math 1 and ten (10 credits of Geometry. (30 credits) 3. Three (3) courses in science including one (1) year of Biological Science and (1) year of Physical Science (30 credits) 4. Four (4) courses in social studies to include United States History, World History, American Government, and Economics. (30 credits)

Two (2) courses in Physical Education, unless the student has been otherwise exempted pursuant to other sections of the Education Code (Education Code (20 credits) 7. Elective group of courses selected to complete the student s personal education plan. Because the prescribed course of study may not accommodate the needs of some students, the Board shall provide alternative means for the completion of prescribed courses in accordance with law. (cf Alternative Credits Toward Graduation) (cf Certificate of Proficiency/High School Equivalency) (cf Differential Graduation and Competency Standards for Students with Disabilities)

5 BP (e) The Superintendent or designee shall exempt or waive specific course requirements for foster youth, homeless students, and children of military families in accordance with Education Code and (cf Education for Homeless Children) (cf Education for Foster Youth) (cf Education for Children of Military Families) Certificate of Completion A student with exceptional needs can be awarded a Certificate of Completion if the requirements of subdivision (a), (b), or (c) are met. (a) The individual has satisfactorily completed a prescribed alternative course of study approved by the governing board of the school district in which the individual attended school or the school district with jurisdiction over the individual and identified in his or her individualized education program. (b) The individual has satisfactorily met his or her individualized education program goals and objectives during high school as determined by the individualized education program team. (c) The individual has satisfactorily attended high school, participated in the instruction as prescribed in his or her individualized education program, and has met the objectives of the statement of transition services. The Superintendent or designee shall regularly report to the Board regarding the number of students receiving a Certification of Completion and the resources that have been offered to such students. Graduation Ceremonies The annual graduation/commencement ceremonies for all Sanger Unified secondary schools are reserved for students who successfully complete all high school diploma requirements and for students with disabilities who meet all of the requirements prescribed in Board Policy , Instruction, Differential Graduation and Competency Standards for Students with Disabilities. Regular education students who earn a certificate of completion and who therefore do not meet all four of the high school diploma requirements delineated in this policy, shall not be able to participate in the graduation ceremonies held for any Sanger Unified secondary school. Retroactive Diplomas Until July 31, 2018, any student who completed grade 12 in the school year or a

6 BP (f) subsequent school year and has met all applicable graduation requirements other than the passage of the high school exit examination shall be granted a high school diploma. (Education Code ) The district may retroactively grant a high school diploma to a former student who was interned by order of the federal government during World War II or who is an honorably discharged veteran of World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War, provided that he/she was enrolled in a district school immediately preceding the internment or military service and he/she did not receive a diploma because his/her education was interrupted due to the internment or military service. A deceased former student who satisfied these conditions may be granted a retroactive diploma to be received by his/her next of kin. (Education Code 51430) In addition, the district may grant a diploma to a veteran who entered the military service of the United States while he/she was a district student in grade 12 and who had completed the first half of the work required for grade 12.
