2 week of June 7, 2009 Jesus Fed Five Thousand Bible Passage John 6:1-15 Level of Biblical Learning Jesus was able to perform miracles because He is God s Son. Bible Truth Jesus provides for people s needs. Life Application I can trust God to provide for my needs. Memory Verse My God will supply all your needs. Philippians 4:19 Personal Bible Study Study before you teach. Let God prepare you to teach His Word. The feeding of the 5,000 is the only miracle recorded in all four gospels. Read Mark 6:31 to discover why Jesus and His disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee. Now read Matthew 14:14 to discover why Jesus did not avoid the crowd even though He had planned to rest. Whatever the reason for the crowd s size, a problem arose: It was getting late, and there was no food. Read Luke 9:12 to discover the disciples suggestion. Notice the test Jesus put forth to Philip, Where will we buy bread so these people can eat? How would you have responded? The disciples simply did not have money to buy food for so many people. Two hundred denarii would equal about a year s wages for a poor laborer. While Philip pondered for a human solution, Andrew discovered the possibility of a divine solution. Andrew presented a boy and his lunch to Jesus. What lessons do you think Jesus taught through the feeding of the 5,000? Though Andrew s comment, like Philip s, was uncertain, it was sufficient for Jesus. Jesus said, Have the people sit down. The accounts in Mark and Luke describe the orderly arrangements (see Mark 6:40; Luke 9:14). Imagine how that boy felt seeing his lunch in Jesus hands. Imagine the disciples amazement as that lunch continued to be distributed. What lessons do you see in this miracle? Everyone was full! Jesus provided an abundance and instructed the disciples to collect the leftover bread. How much was left? Our God is the One who has proven that He will provide for the needs of those who trust Him. Consider for a moment the felt needs in your life. Jesus stands ready to satisfy our deepest physical and spiritual needs if only we will trust Him, for He is the Bread of Life (John 6:32-33). Consider your relationship with Jesus: Do you hunger to know Jesus more fully? How do you receive spiritual nourishment from Jesus? Do you seek to live each day in a way that pleases God through the grace of His strength rather than your own? It was only through Jesus miraculous provision that the disciples were able to distribute food among so many people. The rich blessing of knowing Jesus as Provider awaits us if we will only trust Him. 8 Bible Teaching for 3rd and 4th Graders

3 Session at a Glance 1 PREVIEW the Bible Study (until time for Sunday School to start) Early arrivers will discover the mystery word of the day. 2 POWER UP for Bible Study (5-10 minutes) Kids will play What do you need? They will solve the math mysteries by placing the correct sign (+ or -) in the missing blanks. 3 PLUG IN to Bible Study (25-30 minutes) Kids will hear the Bible story while using a flashlight to highlight key numbers, learn the memory verse by singing, pray, use the number cards to review the Bible story, and use the learner guide to apply the Bible to life. 4 PERSONALIZE the Bible Study (25-30 minutes) Choice 1: Wants/Needs Loop Game Choice 2: Miracles Meet Needs Choice 3: Basket Weaving 1 PREVIEW the Bible Study for kids who arrive early Take advantage of this extra teaching time. 2 Explain that each Sunday in June early arrivers will learn about a mystery word. The mystery word of the day is trust. Display the word. Discuss the meaning of the word. Show the kids how to find the word trust in a concordance. Challenge the kids to locate some verses about trust in their Bibles and use sticky notes to mark the verses. E If you trust in someone or something, you have confidence in them to do what they say they will do. Trust is relying on and believing in someone. EWe can always trust God. POWER UP for Bible Study a fun, 5-10 minute activity to focus kids attention on the Bible study for the day Start at the time designated by your church for Sunday School to start. Lead the children to decide whether a plus or a minus sign should go in each box to make each statement true. E Math is something in which we put our trust. There is only one right answer to each of these problems. E Take a look at this statement 2 q 5 = Is there anything we can place there to make that statement true? It would take a miracle! Today we re going to study about a miracle Jesus performed when He made 2+5 equal enough to feed 5000! 4 Pack Item 2, June Title Banner, prepared as directed Pack Item 5, Time Line Piece 19 Pack Item 7, Miracle Numbers CD Track 1, Mission Introduction Teaching Picture 1 flashlight 3 PLUG IN to Bible Study a time to study, memorize, and relate to the Bible 1 The Bible says Call attention to the title banner. Play Mission Introduction. Explain that this is Case 7 because today is June 7. Define miracle (something only God can do). Add today s piece to the time line. Show the teaching picture. Talking Point EIf you were the boy giving Jesus your lunch, what would you be thinking right now? Ask a teacher to shine a flashlight on each Miracle Number as each one appears in the Bible story. 2 Remember this Direct the kids to locate Philippians 4:19 in their Bibles. Ask for volunteers to read the verse aloud. Jesus Fed Five Thousand Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee. A huge crowd followed Him because they had seen the miracles He was doing. He went up on the side of the mountain and sat down with His disciples. Jesus knew that there were many people present and that they all needed something to eat. He said to Philip, Where will we buy bread so these people can eat? Jesus knew He could provide the bread, and He knew how He was going to do so, but He wanted to test Philip and see what he would answer. Philip replied, Even two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn t be enough for all of these to have just a little! (A denarius was about a day s pay.) [Shine the light on the number 200.] Andrew, one of Jesus disciples, said, There is a boy here who has five [Shine the light on the number 5.] barley loaves and two fish [Shine the light on the number 2.], but what is that for so many people? Jesus said, Have the people sit down. There was plenty of grass there, so the people all sat. About 5,000 men were present [Shine the light on the number 5,000.], plus women and children. Jesus said a prayer giving thanks for the food. Then He began to give fish and bread to the people. He gave them as much as they wanted to eat. When everyone was full, Jesus told the disciples to collect the leftover food. They had enough left over to fill twelve [Shine the light on the number 12.] baskets! When the people saw this miracle, they knew that Jesus must be the Prophet for whom they had been waiting. Jesus knew they were about to take Him and try to make Him king, so He left and went into the mountains alone. John 6: Bible Teaching for 3rd and 4th Graders

5 Take today s memory verse from the Case 7 file folder and display it. Lead the group to read the verse from the displayed poster, and then remove the poster and lead kids to say the verse from memory. Pack Item 3, June Memory Verses EThis verse is a promise from God, and God always keeps His promises. EWe can pray and ask God to supply our needs, and He will. 3 Sing and pray Lead the group to sing The Miracle Worker. Pray, thanking God for His miracles and for providing for our needs. 4 The Bible and me Guide kids to work the learner guide activity Stuff I Need. EGod supplies all our needs, but also many of our wants. EInvite kids to name things God gives them that aren t necessarily needs. 5 Review Display each of the miracle numbers used during the Bible story. Invite volunteers to share what the significance of each number is and retell the story. Ask the questions from the June 7 review questions on page 32. 6 4 PERSONALIZE the Bible Study Choose an activity to lead to help kids relate to the Bible truth. Choice 1 Pack Item 8, Wants/ Needs Loop Game Cards chart paper markers pencils Choice 1: Wants/Needs Loop Game Guide kids to complete learner guide activity Do You See? Give each child a card to play the loop game. Explain the following rules: F Each person has a statement on the bottom of his card describing a need or want. F One person reads the statement on the bottom of his card. F If you have the answer on the top of your card, say it aloud. Then read the bottom of your card. There is only one answer for the bottom of each card. After the game, make a list on chart paper of wants and a list of needs. Add the words from the playing cards to the appropriate list. EIt is important to know the difference between wants and needs. Wants are things we would like to have but can live without. Needs are basic to everyone and necessary for life, such as food, water, clothing, and shelter. EGod tells us in His Word that He will supply all our needs. (Philippians 4:19) EWe can ask God to meet our needs and trust that He will do so. (the people) EWhat was that need? (food) EHow did Jesus meet that need? (He miraculously multiplied the small lunch.)

7 EThe Bible records many other times that Jesus used miracles to meet needs. EKnowing about times Jesus met needs can help us trust Him to meet our needs. Call attention to the names, Scripture references, needs, and miracles displayed around the room. Direct kids to work in pairs to choose a Scripture card, read the Bible passage listed, and locate the matching person name, need, and what miracle Jesus did to meet that need. Let each pair share its discovery with the others. Choice 3: Basket Weaving Lead kids to complete the learner guide activity Do You See? Guide each child to weave a basket by weaving construction paper strips in and out on the sides of a strawberry basket. Let each child use the Loaves and Fish patterns to cut several fish and loaves from the tan paper. Guide the children to write on the fish patterns things they need and decorate the cutouts using crayons or markers. Guide kids to write things they want on the loaves and decorate those also. EGod provides all our needs, but He also provides many of our wants. EWe can ask God to meet our needs and trust that He will answer those prayers. ETake a fish or loaf from your basket each day and thank God for meeting that need or giving you something that is not necessarily a need.
