11 What's WRONG with this map? The Florida parishes and Acadian parishes are the WRONG COLOR. Just follow the DIRECTIONS PLEASE.
12 Directions: Based on my vast, past experiences, here are the things you might want to know before, during, after you do this project. These have worked for me many, many years. Hope they work for you. 1. Print out copies of each map section. Run EXTRAS, they will need them. I always showed my students each section on a white board projection and we talked about each parish, parish seat and festivals, historical sites, etc. The power-points are on 2. While using the appropriate power-point the students will follow along and fill in their map each day. (You may add whatever extra info or highlights you see as fit. Students will complete parish, parish seat, additional towns, rivers, highways, etc.) 3. I always gave info about a festival for all section except one which left students a small bit of textbook/internet research to complete. 4. Parish names should be in CAPS and parish seats in Upper and lower case as with most maps. 5. As students begin their final posters, given them a fresh set of maps, directions, symbols, etc. 6. When we finished drawing the sections in class they were then given time at home to complete the map, state symbols, coloring in pencil colors. Generally two weeks or less depending on what you require. 7. Students could use my symbols or pull pictures from the internet which gave them some individual choice. All map sections should be cut out and should fit together like a puzzle. 8. The students SHOULD write in black ink, color in appropriate pencil colors, and follow the simple rubric. 9. I always got maps from VERY RIGHT to VERY WRONG but the grading stickers allowed me to give them SOME points. Generally they got the parish names and seats correct. Stickers are printed on Avery 8163 sheets of 10 per page. 10. When they turned in the maps, I had students turn them in BEFORE School so they did not roll them up or mess them up. They turned them in UPSIDE DOWN WITHOUT ME SEEING THEM, as I told them: "it was to get a fair and impartial grade". 11. Once the maps were all turned in, I picked them up, flipped them over and NEVER looked or saw the names until I graded them. Fair and impartial grading. All I do is put a sticker on them and grade them. It has taken me a week to ten days to grade them all me if you have any questions because I know I left out something even though I have done this foe 20+ years in September, October, or early November each year. latraveler@bellsouth.net
13 Rubric for grading maps Overall Appearance Parish AND Parish Seats Sites and Schools Highways and waterways Map key and state symbols A B C D U Map appears to be very well presented, symbols are all here, proper key, rivers/highways seem correct All 64 parishes and parish seats are written properly in black ink and in upper, or upper and lower case. Following the directions for state sites and all universities is well done and in proper locations Following the directions, state highways and waterways are in proper locations. Following the directions the map key seems correct and all state symbols are properly labeled and attached to poster. Map appears to look pretty good, symbols are mostly here, proper key, rivers/highways seem mostly correct. Most parishes and parish seats are written properly in black ink and most are in upper, or upper and lower case. Most state sites and universities are located and in proper locations. Most state highways and/or waterways are in proper locations and labeled correctly. The map key seems nearly correct and most state symbols are properly labeled. Map appears to look good, some symbols are missing, a few key issues, rivers/highways seem mostly correct. Most parishes and parish seats are written properly in black ink but are not in upper, or upper and lower case. Many state sites and universities are located and in proper locations. Many state highways and/or waterways are in proper locations and many labeled correctly. The map key is mostly correct and but state symbols are incomplete and improperly labeled. Map appears to look rushed, some symbols are missing, problems with map key, some rivers/highways are missing. Some of parishes and parish seats are written improperly or not in black ink, or not in upper, or upper and lower case. Missing state sites and/or universities plus locations are wrong locations. Missing some state highways and/or waterways and in wrong locations and labeled incorrectly. The map key is missing and some state symbols are missing and/or improperly labeled. Map appears to look very rushed, many symbols are missing, problems with map key, and/or many rivers/highways are missing. Many of parishes and parish seats are written improperly in pencil, and are not in upper, or upper and lower case. Many missing state sites and/or universities plus locations are not correct or not shown. Missing some state highways and/or waterways and in wrong locations and labeled incorrectly. Either the map key is missing or the state symbols are missing and/or improperly labeled. In all my years of doing this project I have NEVER come across a turned in map that got all U's. I GIVE points very freely starting with the appearance. If they turned in a map, they get SOME points. Almost every map gotten points for the parish / parish seats. They may have missed some of the schools or sites but still they got some of them. The highways are generally done nearly correct and many waterways are correct but some may not be labeled. My biggest problem was always with the map key. It is general not done or they tried to use MY map key which gives them 0 points. The symbols are generally correct. So you see, students can get lots of points even if the map is not done correctly. I have never given a student a totally bad set of points if they turned a poster in due to the fact that SOMETHING is always done correctly. It may not be what they wanted but it is generally much more than they expected. The points, on average run B, A, B, A, C. So 16 out of 25 isn't so bad. Mostly, they have learned something about Louisiana. Mainly my students learn that if they start working on a project from the beginning, it all works out in the end with good grades and I'm not the bad guy here, Most of our learning has been in fun and by the end of the year my students just wonder "How did I learn that?"
