2 Dear FASS students, It is my pleasure to have this opportunity to welcome you all to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for this new academic year 2013/14. More specifically I welcome new students to this prestigious Faculty. It is my hope that continuing students have enjoyed their studies in the just ended academic year and are ready to enroll for yet another year in their academic life with the Faculty. It is the largest faculty and prides itself in the wide range of courses and course combinations it offers at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The faculty has seven academic departments, two centers and one unit: 1. Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies (HPRS) 2. Department of Political Science and Public Administration (PSPA) 3. Department of Geography (GEOG) 4. Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies (LLS) 5. Department of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) 6. Department of Tourism and Hospitality (T&H) 7. Department of Sociology and Social Work (SOSW) 8. Center for Economics and Community Economic Development (CECED) which hosts two departments: a. Department of Economics (ECON) b. Department of Community Economic Development (CED) 9. Mwl JK Nyerere Centre for Good Governance and Media Studies (JKNCGG&MS) 10. French Corner Unit (FCU) Therefore you have made a wise choice to choose a FASS programme. COURSE CODES AND CHOICE OF SUBJECTS Each subject starts with an "O" which stands for The Open University of Tanzania. It is followed by the subject alphabet and code numbers. The code numbers used are in the series of 100 for Level One, 200 for Level Two and 300 for Level Three. Bachelor of Arts in International Relations (BAIR) Host Dep t: PSPA PHASING OUT OF BA (GENERAL) AND BA EDUCATION PROGRAMMES The BA General programme which used to be offered by FASS is phasing out. It will no longer be offered by FASS. However, continuing students who are willing to graduate with a BA General Degree will be given up to 2 years from the academic year 2013/14 to wind- up. Other continuing students pursuing BA General may wish to relocate/migrate to the newly established specific programme such as BA in Economics, BA in English Language and Linguistics, BA in History etc. In order to increase efficiency in delivery and educational quality of the OUT s graduate teachers, the Bachelor of Arts with Education (BA ED) programme will be offered by the Faculty of Education Page 3 of 7

4 (FED) with effect from this academic year ( ). Thus all BA ED students will be hosted by FED, but FASS will continue participating in the preparation of relevant study materials for BA ED programme as may be needed by FED. Thus FASS will concentrate in offering the above 17 programmes in Arts and Social Sciences. NON DEGREE PROGERAMMES FASS offers the following 5 certificate programmes: 1. Certificate Course in Journalism- evening and executive mode of delivery 2. Certificate in Tour Guiding evening and executive mode of delivery 3. English Proficiency course Online 4. French Course Online 5. Kiswahili for foreigners evening POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES Apart form the undergraduate progerammes, the Faculty also offers a number of postgraduate study programmes. These include Masters Programmes, PhD Programmes, and Postgraduate Diplomas. There are two broad categories of Masters Degrees: Masters Degree by Thesis and Masters Degree by Coursework (Distance, Evening or Executive Modes). The following are 16 postgraduate programmes to be offered by FASS during the 2013/14 academic year and their delivery modes: 1. Master of Social work (MSW) (Hybrid mode) Executive 2. Master of Arts in Tourism Studies (MATS) Thesis, Evening & executive 5. Masters of Arts in History (MA Hist) Thesis, Distance, Evening and executive 6. Master of Arts in Natural Resource Assessment and Management (MA NRAM) distance, Evening and executive 7. Master of Arts in International Development and Cooperation (MA ICD) evening, executive 8. Masters of Science in Humanitarian Action, Cooperation & Development (MSc HACD) evening, executive 9. Master of Arts in Governance and Leadership (MA GL) executive, evening 10. Master of Arts in Kiswahili (MA Kisw) Thesis, distance, evening, executive 11. Master of Arts in Linguistics (MA Ling) Thesis 12. Master of Arts in Geography (M.A. (Geogr) Thesis 13. 5 How do you pay the Fees for postgraduate programmes? The tuition fee for all FASS Evening and Executive programmes is payable to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences but the direct cost is borne by the student or the sponsor(s). For Tanzanian students in the Evening and Executive modes, tuition fees should be paid through the following Accounts: 1. Account Name: OUT MAST PROG - CRDB Bank Account No. 01J Used by the following departments: T&H, CECED, PSPA, JMS Programmes involved: MA TM, MCED, MSc Econ, MAGL, MSc HACD, MAICD & PGDPS 2. Account Name: MA Social Work - CRDB Bank Account No. 01J Used by the following departments: SOSW, HPRS, LLS and GEOG Programmes involved: MSW, PGD SW, MA KISW, MA NRAM and MA HIST For the rest of the fees instructions will be given in the admission letter. Apart from the tuition fees, a student must also have paid the application fee, OUTSO fee, and ID Processing fee when applying for the program through the Research and Consultancy Account No (NBC Limited Corporate Branch). In all cases fees are paid in at least two installments. Please consult relevant Heads of Departments or programme coordinators for details on payment procedure since programmes are structured differently. Delivery modes for Masters programmes by coursework 1. Distance Mode (DM) This is a learning mode where students are given reading materials and they appear for Face to Face sessions of about 4 days twice a year for postgraduate students and once a year for undergraduates). The students appear for a Main test in April and final exam in June. The fees for this delivery mode for postgraduate programmes costs about TSh 2.5million. 2. Blended Distance mode (BDM) BDM is a modified version of the DM in that students use e- learning platform (MOODLE) which is internet based; where students have opportunity to virtually interact with other students taking same course and with lecturers of the respective course. Students must attend a 5 days Face to Face residential training on how to use the MOODLE platform. The e- learning platform enables students to engage in discussions guided by their instructors. This mode costs about TSh 3.5million for the entire programme. 3. Blended Evening Mode (BEM) In addition to using e- learning platform (MOODLE), BEM requires students to attend face to face lectures for three work days a week- 3 hours per day from 1700HRS- 2000HRS until the course is covered. The lectures can also be offered over the weekends only from 0800HRS 0500HRS on Saturdays and Sundays respectively. Breakfast and Lunch are served. The tuition fees for this mode of delivery is about Tsh. 3.5 million for evening (weekdays) or about 4.5 million for evening (weekend) 4. Blended Executive Mode (BEXM) Blended executive Mode (also known as Hydride Mode) requires students to attend face to face sessions for about 2 weeks consecutively for about 3 times for the entire coursework. 6 break of about 2 months in between the sessions during which students continue to use the e- learning platform. Students are served with breakfast and lunch since lecturer start from 0800HRS to 1500HRS. This costs about 4.5million for the entire programme. MAIN CHALLENGES 1. Study materials for undergraduate programmes Challenges have become inevitable reality in course of our day to day operations and these are not unique to FASS only. The greatest challenge that FASS is currently facing is that the 12 new programmes will need new study materials since the previous ones do not conform to the revised curriculum. The Faculty has to write about 250 new study materials for the new programmes. This requires significant investment in time, human and financial resources. Students should consult their respective Heads of departments on availability of study materials as well as other reading materials. Students are advised to utilize the detailed course outlines and refer to relevant reading materials that are listed under each course, including intensive search of reading materials on the internet. Students should visit the OUT library website: for online academic resources. 2. Migration from BA Gen to other undergraduate programmes within FASS In this academic year (2013/2014) all BA Gen students will be guided on the migration plan that will enable them change programme into new ones. You are advised to consult your department for details on how to migrate from the old BA (Gen) to a programme of your choice. The handbook contains all the important information about the Faculty which may not easily be found in the general OUT prospectus.
