1 Overview Introduction Software (AppRM) is a solution for backup and recovery of business application data designed to improve the time to recover from an outage. Application Recovery Manager automates restoration of application databases such as Exchange and Microsoft SQL in the event of failure or corruption and provides the ability to restore data to the moment before an outage. Application Recovery Manager, Powered by Data Protector Software technology, delivers a stand alone solution to augment your existing backup software strategy. as Application Recovery Manager is the HP standard for application integrated data recovery for Windows environments attached to HP StorageWorks EVA storage arrays. In Windows 2003 environments, Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) provides the basis to create online point-in-time copies of open files from a file server, backup application or from within Exchange or Microsoft SQL application environments. Application Recovery Manager integrates with VSS to make non-disruptive point-in-time copies of Exchange and Microsoft SQL databases to recover in minutes, not the hours required by traditional recovery from tape. A single AppRM deployment supports Microsoftcompliant quick recovery using the VSS framework for Exchange and Microsoft SQL with HP EVA disk arrays. If your Microsoft SQL database is embedded in an SAP ecosystem, AppRM enhances the backup and recovery experience by reducing the impact of SAP application operations. 4 Hardware Support and Software Pre-Requisites Hardware Support HP StorageWorks EVA 4000/6000/8000 and EVA3000/5000 arrays Software Pre-Requisites Cell Manager Requirements On Systems Running Windows Server 2003 (32-bit, x64-bit) The Cell Manager must meet the following minimum requirements: 256 MB RAM (512 MB recommended). For each parallel backup session 40 MB of RAM are required. 5 Installation Server and Client System Requirements Installation Server Requirements On Systems Running Windows Server 2003 (32-bit, x64-bit) The Installation Server must meet the following minimum requirements: 64 MB RAM (Windows 2000 Professional) 250 MB of disk space Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or later Client System Requirements On Systems Running Windows Server 2003 The prerequisites for Windows user interface installation and remote installation on the client are: Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1: 32-bit, x64, IA64 Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition R2: 32-bit, x64, IA64 The following table shows the disk space and RAM requirements for Windows clients: Client System RAM (MB) Disk Space (MB) User Interface 256 a 100 b Disk Agent 64 (recommended 128) 10 Integration Modules 64 (recommended 128) 20 a. The memory requirements for the GUI system vary significantly with the number of elements that need to be displayed at a time. This consideration applies to the worst case actual display which you want to view (like expanding a single directory). You do not need to consider the total of directories and file names on a client, unless you want to expand all directories while viewing. It has been shown that 2 MB memory are required per 1000 elements (directories or file names) to display plus a base need for about 50 MB. So the 256 MB of RAM are enough to display about the maximum number of file names. b. With regard to the disk space, keep in mind, the page file alone should be able to grow to about 3 times the physical memory. Requirements for Windows Server 2003 Application Recovery Manager uses three services: OmniInet - Client backup service, CRS - Cell Server Service, and RDS - Cell Server Database Service. By default, OmniInet and RDS services are running under the Local System account, and CRS service is running under the Administrator's account. Hardware Providers HP VSS hardware providers: VSS hardware providers enable point-in-time copies with nearly instant recovery of a single volume or multiple volumes. VSS providers are typically used in combination with a requestor application such as a backup and recovery application, or in this case Application Recovery Manager. Microsoft VSS services enable business applications to interface seamlessly with HP StorageWorks Arrays to perform point-in-time copies with nearly instant recovery. HP VDS hardware providers: VDS hardware providers enable volume and logical unit management of HP StorageWorks arrays from a central Windows Server 2003 Microsoft Management Console. Administrators can discover, configure and monitor supported HP storage devices from Windows Server 2003 operating environments. 7 Licenses, Services and Warranties Distribution Media CD-ROM The Application Recovery Manager 6.0 product structure is capacity based; product structure and licensing consists of two main categories: 1. A management server (Cell Manager) based on the operating system 2. Application Recovery Manager Functional Extensions: The functional extension licenses are required once per instance (system and terabyte) for on-line backup of databases and applications, and Instant Recovery. NOTE: The Windows product licenses operate on Windows platforms only. Passwords are bound to the Cell Manager and are valid for the entire Application Recovery Manager cell. Clients do not require any license for file system or disk image backups. Required per server; (it does not matter how many databases are running on the system). Even if databases of different types are running on the same system, only one license is required. An LTU is required for each partition of a partitioned system. In a cluster environment, each system participating in the cluster requires a LTU. The Windows 2003 file system snapshot feature VSS (Volume Shadow copy Service) is supported without this LTU. However, on-line backup of Exchange and SQL Server databases, require this on-line backup extension. Used disk space capacity is the total capacity of all primary volumes on the disk array that are used for Zero Downtime Backup or Instant Recovery (i.e. Primary means the original production data volumes) of Exchange or SQL Server production volumes (databases and logs). This amount represents the total true usable capacity of these volumes corresponding with their configured diskgroup (EVA arrays) sizes. Data Protector does not require licenses for the capacity consumed by the secondary volumes, mirrors, and snapshots that are used for data protection. Used capacity differs from raw capacity in that RAID overhead is excluded. This means the RAID configuration does not need to be considered. HP Application Recovery Manager Instant Recovery EVA 10TB LTU Each includes the license-to-use (LTU) to protect ten terabytes (TBs) of used disk space capacity for the specified disk array type. Protection is provided via an integration of: Microsoft's Virtual Shadow Copy Service (VSS), HP's Business Copy EVA, and HP's zero downtime backup and instant recovery (Powered by Data Protector).
